Hello friends, good vibes to all.
The Oscars, this award that was once very prestigious but as the years go by has become less and less relevant and serious when it comes to choosing its nominees and winners. And I'm not saying it myself, but the critics themselves and the audience levels in their galas. But why are we talking about this? - Well, because yesterday the nominees for these awards were announced and this has been a commotion everywhere due to the excessive appearance of a film and the absence of other options that should certainly be considered. The issue here is that Emilia Perez has 13 nominations, a fact that I find unheard of, unbelievable and very hard to believe given the minimal quality of this film.
Every year something similar happens, we understand that this is done by the academy to seek ratings and that the awards become part of the conversation as exactly is happening with this publication but this does not mean that the indignation does not exist. What these “erudite cinephiles” are telling me is that this film is on par with: Gone with the Wind, Forrest Gump, Lord of the Rings or Titanic. And certainly it should be made clear that this is not because of homophobia or anything of the sort, but because Emilia Perez is a terrible film, poorly acted and directed, uncomfortable to watch and not to mention the stereotypes that it touches on with respect to Mexican culture that many have already criticized. The Oscars have always been controversial but I feel that this is on a much higher level.
The only one I save from that film is Zoe Saldaña, a great actress who always does well in every role she plays. This brings us to the nominees. I would think that she herself will win the supporting actress award, she already did it at the Golden Globes. With this category I have a problem and that is that Margaret Qualley was not included in the nominees which for me is an insult given the great work she did in The Substance, totally incomprehensible that decision. As for supporting actor, Kieran Culkin should repeat, his performance in A Real Pain is very top notch.
Talking about the best actresses and actors I hope, I really hope that there are no surprises and Demi Moore is the winner, there is no room for another option, maybe Mikey Madison in Anora and I still see her far from the award. As for the men I think Adrien Brody in The Brutalist is going to sweep here, that film already surprised many at the Golden Globes so history almost always repeats itself at the Oscars. I think that within these nominees there is not the level to reach Brody even though Sebastian Stan with The Apprentice or Ralph Fiennes himself in Conclave have been quite good.
Obviously the Oscars have many more nominations but I think we will touch on the most important ones. The nominees for best director and its winner usually go hand in hand with whichever film is awarded best picture. If we follow this premise The Brutalist should continue to sweep the board since as I said at the Golden Globes we also saw this. The issue here is that sometimes the academy throws its big surprises and the best director does not end up being the one of the winning film. Will these people be able to give any of these awards, understanding that they are the most important ones, to Emilia Perez? - Experience says it is possible, but I don't think so. When they want to “vindicate” a film, what they do is to fill it with nominations so that they can see that there is some recognition but at the moment of truth they don't get the awards.
For many, including myself, the Oscars are almost a parody. For example, Will Smith's unfortunate event with Chris Rock in 2022, just to mention one of many. I probably won't watch the gala or maybe I will because of the morbid curiosity that can produce what might happen in it. And this is precisely the point, people stopped being aware of the movies to put their attention on any controversy that may occur discrediting an industry that for a long time was full of quality and sobriety. So yes, the Oscars, with everything that happens and happens around them, are slowly killing cinema. Let's hope that many nominations do not mean many awards.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos leemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡Hugs to all, see you next time!

I am like you impressed with what is happening this year in all these awards, I do not know what hook has this movie Emilia Perez that is taking awards everywhere without reason and with better movies than that.
As you say, they want to be a trend and that people talk about it, because they say that they should talk bad or good, but they should talk about it. Undoubtedly the Oscars is a circus. Greetings.
