Comienza narrando la ubicación de dónde ocurre la historia. Mostrando un mapa específico, hacen zoom para hacer un recorrido por varios pueblos cercanos. Un auto va en carretera y se estaciona frente a una casa rodeada de árboles grandes y pequeños. El narrador menciona a la familia Russel, quienes rentan dicha casa desde hace ya nueve años, pero a pesar del tiempo, aún así los demás del pueblo seguían considerándolos forasteros. Del carro se baja un hombre al que su hijo lo saluda y él responde diciendo que lo llevará con él a algún lugar.

It begins by narrating the location of where the story takes place. Showing a specific map, they zoom in to take a tour of several nearby towns. A car is on the road and parks in front of a house surrounded by large and small trees. The narrator mentions the Russel family, who have been renting the house for nine years now, but despite the time, they were still considered outsiders by others in town. A man gets out of the car and is greeted by his son, who responds by saying that he will take him somewhere with him.

Willard camina con su hijo hacía el bosque y el narrador cuenta cómo hace años él había armado una cruz gastada sobre un árbol caído detrás de su casa, e iba todas las mañanas y tardes a rezarle a Dios, y menciona cómo el niño pensaba que su padre luchaba contra el Diablo a todas horas. El niño se arrodilla frente a la cruz con su padre, y éste le dice s su hijo que rece por lo sucedido ese día y que sea sincero.

Willard walks with his son into the woods and the narrator tells how years ago he had set up a worn cross on a fallen tree behind their house, and went every morning and evening to pray to God, and mentions how the boy thought his father fought the Devil all the time. The boy kneels in front of the cross with his father, and his father tells his son to pray for what happened that day and to be sincere.

El niño, que tenía un gran moretón en el ojo, comienza a rezar mientras Willard tiene recuerdos de la guerra en la estuvo doce años antes. Viendo sus recuerdos muestra cómo iba caminando por el bosque con sus compañeros cuando se encuentran con el cuerpo de un hombre que era su sargento, al que crucificaron los japoneses. The boy, who had a large bruise over his eye, begins to pray while Willard has flashbacks of the war he was in twelve years earlier. Seeing his memories he shows how he was walking through the woods with his buddies when they come across the body of a man who was his sergeant, crucified by the Japanese. Full of blood, flies and nailed to the cross with knives, he suddenly wakes up and looks at them. To put him out of his misery, they shoot him in the head and the sergeant dies instantly. Some time after that day, Willard arrives in a town by bus and gets off and enters a coffee shop. A man next to him named Carl, who was a photographer, meets one of the waitresses there named Sandy, to whom the narrator mentions that years later Carl would refer to her as "bait" and she to Carl as "the shooter," and that together they would call their victims "models."

Willard, por su lado, conoce a otra camarera de la cual se enamora inmediatamente. Ella al salir a tomar su descanso se encuentra con él, y él la mira darle una pequeña comida a un hombre necesitado. Willard, meanwhile, meets another waitress with whom he immediately falls in love. She goes out to take her break and runs into him, and he watches her give a small meal to a needy man. She talks to him and in their conversation she compliments him, he blushes and she leaves for her job. Willard now drives with his uncle, as they joke and drink beer, Willard gives his uncle the supposed gun that Hitler shot himself in the head with and his uncle sneers and says he was surely lied to. In the evening when he gets home his mom hugs him and they go in for dinner, and Willard tells her how he fell in love with the waitress but doesn't know her name. His mother a bit disinterested, tells him that there is a woman at church she wants to introduce him to and he complains that he doesn't want to go.

En la mañana en la iglesia le presentan a la chica, llamada Helen quien también estaba desinteresada en él. El narrador comenta que Willard no sabía que su madre le prometió a Dios que a cambio de traerlo a casa, él se casaría con ésta chica a la que su familia en un incendio se quemaron y quedó sola. Dos hermanos suben a cantar una canción y uno de ellos, Roy, da un sermón sobre los miedos de las personas. Intensificando su voz, comienza a gritar que su mayor miedo eran las arañas, pero que con la ayuda de Dios logró superar ese miedo, por lo que procede a tomar un frasco con miles de arañas y lo vierte completamente sobre él mismo mientras la gente observa asustada.

In the morning at church he is introduced to the girl, named Helen who was also disinterested in him. The narrator comments that Willard did not know that his mother promised God that in exchange for bringing him home, he would marry this girl whose family burned down in a fire and she was left alone. Two brothers come up to sing a song and one of them, Roy, gives a sermon about people's fears. Intensifying his voice, he begins to shout that his greatest fear was spiders, but with God's help he managed to overcome that fear, so he proceeds to take a jar with thousands of spiders and pours it all over himself while people watch in fear.

Días después, Willard vuelve a aquel pueblo donde conoció a su chica ideal, la camarera, y le pide su nombre. Se puede decir que el resto es historia ya que acto siguiente, años después, muestran a Willard y a la camarera Charlotte, que ahora es su esposa, con su bebé en brazos observando aquella casa rodeada de árboles que rentaron para vivir. Willard en la inspección de los alrededores, camina por el bosque hasta ese árbol caído y se detiene a mirarlo. El mismo en el que años después montó esa cruz para rezarle. Willard en una carta le menciona a su madre que están reuniendo para algún día comprar la casa, que su hijo Arvin ya cumplió un año y que todo estaba bien con ellos, que quería volver a rezar. Helen con su bebé en el regazo, en el otro pueblo en casa de la madre de Willard, lee dicha carta que ya había llegado.

Days later, Willard returns to the town where he met his ideal girl, the waitress, and asks for her name. It can be said that the rest is history since the next act, years later, they show Willard and the waitress Charlotte, who is now his wife, with their baby in their arms observing that house surrounded by trees that they rented to live in. Willard in surveying the surroundings, walks through the woods to that fallen tree and stops to look at it. The same one on which years later he mounted that cross to pray to. Willard in a letter mentions to his mother that they are getting together to someday buy the house, that their son Arvin is a year old and all was well with them, that he wanted to pray again. Helen with her baby on her lap, in the other town at Willard's mother's house, reads the letter that had already arrived.

Helen deja a su bebé con Emma y sube en el auto con su marido Roy, el cual le dice para ir a un paseo y que su hermano se quedaría en el auto a tomar una siesta mientras ellos dos caminaban. Arrancan y narra la película que sería la última vez que Helen vería a su hija Lenora, ya que siete años después encuentran el cuerpo de Helen enterrado en el bosque. Volviendo a 1957, el año dónde comienza la película a contar la historia, Arvin tenía nueve años y volvió de la escuela con un ojo morado al ser víctima de unos estudiantes de su escuela un poco mayores y más grandes que él. Willard camina con él al bosque y se encuentran, como en el principio, arrodillados ante la cruz.

Helen leaves her baby with Emma and gets in the car with her husband Roy, who tells her to go for a walk and that her brother would stay in the car to take a nap while the two of them walked. They drive off and the film narrates that it would be the last time Helen would see her daughter Lenora, as seven years later they find Helen's body buried in the woods. Going back to 1957, the year where the film begins to tell the story, Arvin was nine years old and came home from school with a black eye after being the victim of some students from his school a little older and bigger than him. Willard walks with him into the woods and they find themselves, as in the beginning, kneeling before the cross.

Unos hombres detrás de ellos con escopetas en las manos, los molestan y empiezan a burlarse, pero Willard hace caso omiso y le dice a Arvin que ése momento es único para Dios, por lo que Arvin sigue rezando cabizbajo. Some men behind them with shotguns in their hands, disturb them and begin to mock them, but Willard ignores them and tells Arvin that this moment is unique for God, so Arvin continues praying with his head down. Arriving home as his mother sings a beautiful song with him, his father appears and tells him to go with him to the gas station. Instead, Willard takes his son to a place where the two men who disturbed them while they were praying were.

Le dice a Arvin que se quede y baja del auto rápidamente para empezar a golpear a uno de los hombres y apretar su rostro contra el lodo, luego escucha un auto intentando arrancar y al darse la vuelta, corre para alcanzar al otro hombre que quería fugarse, pero con si propia escopeta lo golpea repetidas veces en la cara. Todo para darle una lección a su hijo de defenderse de quienes lo molestan. En la noche en su casa, Arvin llega emocionado por la tarde que pasó con su padre, pero ambos encuentran a Charlotte tirada en el piso desmayada y mucho humo en la cocina.

He tells Arvin to stay and quickly gets out of the car to start hitting one of the men and pressing his face into the mud, then he hears a car trying to start and turning around, he runs to catch the other man who wanted to run away, but with his own shotgun he hits him repeatedly in the face. All to teach his son a lesson to defend himself against those who bother him. At home in the evening, Arvin arrives excited about the evening he spent with his father, but they both find Charlotte lying on the floor passed out and a lot of smoke in the kitchen.

La siguiente escena la muestra acostada en su cama con Arvin y él escucha la conversación de su padre con el doctor diciendo que ella tenía cáncer y que no podían curarlo. Su padre se lo lleva una vez más a la cruz a rezar y le cuenta que sólo Dios puede curar a su madre. Willard empieza a gritarle al cielo pidiendo que cure a su esposa, y al ver lo confundido que Arvin estaba, le pega y lo obliga a bajar su cara y a gritarle a Dios que por favor curen a Charlotte.

The next scene shows her lying in bed with Arvin and he overhears his father's conversation with the doctor saying that she had cancer and they could not cure it. His father takes him once again to the cross to pray and tells him that only God can cure his mother. Willard starts screaming to heaven asking him to heal his wife, and seeing how confused Arvin was, he hits him and forces him to lower his face and scream to God to please heal Charlotte.

Pasan tantas horas rezando que se hizo noche y Willard aún seguía llorando allorandole a Dios frente a la cruz. Tarde, al día siguiente, va a un bar as olvidar sus problemas y ahí ve la cabeza de un venado colgada en la pared. Lo hace pensar que tal vez se esperaba otra cosa de él más que sólo rezar, y que a veces debían los hombres hacer sacrificios para mostrar la fe que tienen hacia Dios. Volvió a su casa, le dió de comer a su perro y luego le disparó. Arvin asustado sale de su casa a ver y en la oscuridad descubre a sus su padre cargando al perro muerto hacía la cruz en el bosque. Arvin intenta detenerlo, llora y lo golpea, pero su padre sigue con su dirección fija.

They spent so many hours praying that night fell and Willard was still crying, praying to God in front of the cross. Late the next day, he goes to a bar to forget his problems and there he sees the head of a deer hanging on the wall. It makes him think that maybe something else was expected of him than just praying, and that sometimes men should make sacrifices to show the faith they have in God. He went back to his house, fed his dog and then shot him. Arvin, frightened, goes out of his house to look and in the dark discovers his father carrying the dead dog to the cross in the woods. Arvin tries to stop him, cries and hits him, but his father continues with his fixed direction.

En la cruz, él sollozaba por la pérdida de su mejor amigo, y su padre le grita a Dios que salve a su mujer ya que él sacrificó al perro que amaban. Sin éxito, en un tiempo su esposa fallece y muestran sólo el final del entierro de Charlotte. Al llegar los dos solos a casa, Arvin sube a su habitación a comerse una tarta que dejaron en la entrada de su casa y su padre se va a las la cruz nuevamente. No es hasta la noche que Arvin escucha un sonido raro en el bosque y decide ir a asegurarse de que todo esté bien. Para su sorpresa, su padre estaba cubierto de sangre y con una navaja en la mano. Es ahí donde Arvin con tan sólo nueve años descubre de manera traumática, que su padre se había suicidado y ahora estaba sólo por su cuenta.

At the cross, he was sobbing over the loss of his best friend, and his father cries out to God to save his wife as he sacrificed the dog they loved. To no avail, in time his wife passes away and they show only the end of Charlotte's burial. When the two arrive home alone, Arvin goes up to his room to eat a cake left on the front porch of his house and his father goes to the cross again. It isn't until late at night that Arvin hears a strange sound in the woods and decides to go make sure everything is okay. To his surprise, his father was covered in blood and holding a knife. It is there that Arvin, only nine years old, traumatically discovers that his father had committed suicide and was now on his own.
