[ENG/ESP] Blue Jasmine & A Sincere Recommendation

I don't usually watch movies, thought I've trying to get the habit of watching more of them for quite some time now, but what I really don't usually go for is watching drama movies. And it's not that I dislike drama, I really enjoy watching any kind of conflict as long as its story captivates me in some way, and for me this is one of those films that achieved that and much more, and so let me tell you about Blue Jasmine.

Blue Jasmine (2013) is a comedy-drama film that tells about a woman named Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) who as an ex-rich woman has recently fallen into bankruptcy since her husband, Hal Francis, was arrested and charged for fraud and then latter on committing suicide, her step-son Danny dropped our of his school and severed his ties with her, all of this resulting in Jasmine falling from grace, broke, drown in debt, alone and dealing with a decadent mental state after suffering a nervous breakdown, and so we dip into her life in the moment she has to move from New York to San Francisco where her sister Ginger lives. From this point on we will be shown flashbacks that dwells in the series of event that has caused our protagonist to come where she stands now in the present.

One of the things that made me really like this movie as early on from its 10 minutes in was that Jasmine is... kind of a jerk (lol), see, in a lot of films that are centered around drama and on the hard and sad themes of a series of unfortunate events, we could say that it is the creators responsibility to make us care about their stories, and so it is their “obligation” to make us empathize, relate and feel for the characters right?, they got to make us feel like the person we are watching is a worthy person of happiness and good resolutions they lacked because of various kind of situations, but with Blue Jasmine, that obligation to feel for this character could perfectly not be needed.

Jasmine was a really privileged rich woman, she could have everything she wanted any time she wanted it, she had luxury, money, wealth and a loooving husband that deeply cared for her, and so, she was an asshole to those she didn’t see as equals as her, she was a very pretentious woman that would no make time for you unless you were on what she considered her on (pretty worthy) level. And early example of this is how she treats her sister Ginger, she mentions that it’s not true that she has dismissed her for countless times but unless you are blind anyone can see that she doesn’t give her sister the time of a day and much less consider her as her equal.

Even so, Ginger takes her in for as long as she needs, she doesn’t have any one else but her sister and even most urgently, she doesn’t have anywhere to go. While discussing the matter of her having to get back on her feet, comes the topic of her going back to school and getting a new career to support herself but to start studying what she wants, she would need money to pay for her studies, luckily for her a friend of Ginger’s fiancee, knows of someone with a vacant to work as a receptionist for a dentist office so after no having more options she takes the job while she makes an effort to try and learn how to use a computer. While going thru her flashbacks and watching her throughout her struggle with her job and her studies, we get to see another prevalent problem Jasmine has: alcoholism. Between her anxiety, addiction and worries, she starts to break even more than before, her not conforming to her new lifestyle makes her reminisce of her wealthy past, resulting in her mind to slip for moments and as we see flashbacks of that luxurious and happy life, we also see her talking alone in the streets. And not only talking to herself, but repeating the things she has said in these moments of happiness and fulfillment, just talking like she has gone back to these moments in person and nothing else is real, and for her it kind of is, she goes a couple of minutes of her mind and then realize what she is doing and then just goes back to work.

There’s a lot of these moments when we see her mind deteriorating before our eyes, and it’s just… sad. Remember when I said that this film doesn’t make you feel like you are obligated to feel sorry, to feel anything for Jasmine?, well as much as that is true, is not the ruling truth, is not the only truth. You will feel sorry for her, you will feel sad that she’s going thru that, because as much as she is not perfect and that she could be a bad person, you can not simply not care for her, and that sucks.

Throughout this film we’ll continue looking forward to see Jasmine come out of her dark spot, finding a good ground for her to start over and hoping to see her getting the help she needs, and in fact, there will be moments when we will see her a little happy, we will also see her making mistakes that she probably can not take back, we will see her alone, we will see her suffer, and some of this things will anger us, but even more heartbreaking, we will see her breakdown, talking, all alone, but that’s what makes this film more real, because after all, bad and ugly things can happen to any one that is human.

As some final thoughts, I want to say how impressive and outstanding Cate Blanchett was in this movie, I don’t think anyone would have made this rol feel as nuanced as she did and all she poured to make it feel as harsh as this film can be felt thru all of it, I pretty much watched the film for her and I can freely say that every second of it was worth it, now I’m even more pleased to know she won an Oscar for it because she truly deserved that (can you tell that I’m a fan girl? Ahem).

Honestly this is not exactly a review or even an analysis, I just talked about the plot, Jasmine and the themes of it, but I hope everyone that reads this take this post as a recommendation, that’s why I decided not to talk directly about the end or go into every detail of the story, I want people to watch and experiment for themselves the greatness that is this film, I really couldn’t recommend it more and really hope this post makes at least one person to give it a try. Another thing that I want to add is that I’m a little surprised by the fact that this film is considered a “comedy-drama”(?) I never really laughed watching it, I only felt sadness and even anger at some points, so I would say to people to take it more with a serious focus or to only watch it with “drama lens”.

No suelo ver películas, aunque hace tiempo que he intentado tomar el hábito de ver más, pero lo que realmente no suelo buscar es ver películas de drama. Y no es que me desagrade el drama, realmente disfruto viendo cualquier tipo de conflicto siempre y cuando su historia me cautive de alguna manera, y para mí esta es una de esas películas que logró eso y mucho más, y por eso déjenme contarles sobre Blue Jasmine.

Blue Jasmine (2013) es una película de comedia-dramatica que cuenta la historia de una mujer llamada Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) que como ex mujer rica ha caído recientemente en la bancarrota desde que su esposo, Hal Francis, fue arrestado y acusado por fraude y que luego, luego de esto, se suicidó, su hijastro Danny abandonó su escuela y cortó lazos con ella, todo ello hace que Jasmine caiga en desgracia, arruinada, ahogada por las deudas, sola y con un estado mental decadente tras sufrir una crisis nerviosa, por lo que nos sumergimos en su vida en el momento en que tiene que trasladarse de Nueva York a San Francisco donde vive su hermana Ginger. A partir de este momento se nos mostrarán flashbacks que profundizaran en la serie de acontecimientos que han provocado que nuestra protagonista llegue a donde está ahora en el presente.

Una de las cosas que hizo que me gustara mucho esta película desde sus 10 minutos de duración fue que Jasmine es... una especie de idiota (lol), miren, en muchas películas que se centran en el drama y en los temas duros y tristes de una serie de eventos desafortunados, podríamos decir que es la responsabilidad de los creadores hacer que nos preocupemos por sus historias, y por lo tanto es su "obligación" hacernos empatizar, relacionarnos y doler por los personajes ¿verdad? tienen que hacernos sentir que la persona que estamos viendo es una persona merecedora de felicidad y de buenos propósitos de los que carece por diversos tipos de situaciones, pero con Blue Jasmine, esa obligación de doler por este personaje podría perfectamente no ser necesaria.

Jasmine era una mujer rica y privilegiada, podía tener todo lo que quería en cualquier momento, tenía lujo, dinero, riqueza y un marido súuuper cariñoso que se preocupaba profundamente por ella, y por lo tanto, era una imbécil con los que no veía como iguales a ella, era una mujer muy pretenciosa que no haría tiempo para ti a menos que estuvieras en lo que ella consideraba su propio nivel (uno bastante digno). Y un ejemplo temprano de esto es como trata a su hermana Ginger, ella menciona que no es cierto que la haya desestimado en innumerables veces pero a menos que estés ciego cualquiera puede ver que no le da a su hermana el mínimo tiempo de su día menos la considera como su igual.

Aun así, Ginger la acoge por el tiempo que necesite, no tiene a nadie más que a su hermana y lo más urgente de todo, no tiene a donde ir. Mientras se discute el asunto de que tiene que volver a ponerse en pie, surge el tema de que vuelva a estudiar y consiga una nueva carrera para mantenerse pero para empezar a estudiar lo que quiere, necesitaría dinero para pagar sus estudios, por suerte para ella un amigo de la prometida de Ginger, sabe de alguien con una vacante para trabajar como recepcionista en un consultorio odontológico así que después de no tener más opciones acepta el trabajo mientras se esfuerza por tratar de aprender a usar una computadora. Al pasar por sus flashbacks y verla a lo largo de su lucha con su trabajo y sus estudios, llegamos a ver otro problema prevalente que tiene Jasmine: el alcoholismo. Entre su ansiedad, su adicción y sus preocupaciones, empieza a quebrarse aún más que antes, su no conformidad con su nuevo estilo de vida le hace rememorar su rico pasado, lo que hace que su mente se deslice por momentos y mientras vemos flashbacks de esa vida lujosa y feliz, también la vemos hablando sola en la calle. Y no sólo hablando consigo misma, sino repitiendo las cosas que ha dicho en esos momentos de felicidad y plenitud, simplemente hablando como si hubiera vuelto a esos momentos en persona y nada más fuera real, y para ella como que lo es, se le va un par de minutos de la cabeza y luego se da cuenta de lo que está haciendo y entonces simplemente vuelve a trabajar.

Hay muchos momentos en los que podemos ver su mente deteriorarse ante nuestros ojos, y es simplemente... triste. ¿Recuerdan cuando dije que esta película no te hace sentir como si estuvieras obligado a sentir lástima, a sentir algo por Jasmine?, pues por mucho que eso sea cierto, no es la verdad dominante, no es la única verdad. Sentirás pena por ella, te sentirás triste de que esté pasando por eso, porque por mucho que no sea perfecta y que pueda ser una mala persona, no puedes simplemente no preocuparte por ella, y eso apesta.

A lo largo de esta película seguiremos esperando ver a Jasmine salir de su punto oscuro, encontrando un buen terreno para que vuelva a empezar y esperando verla conseguir la ayuda que necesita, y de hecho, habrá momentos en los que la veremos un poco feliz, también la veremos cometer errores de los que probablemente no pueda retractarse, la veremos sola, la veremos sufrir, y algunas de estas cosas nos enfadarán, pero aún más desgarrador, la veremos derrumbarse, hablar, completamente sola, pero eso es lo que hace que esta película sea más real, porque después de todo, las cosas malas y feas pueden pasarle a cualquiera que sea humano.

Como reflexión final, quiero decir lo impresionante y sobresaliente que estuvo Cate Blanchett en esta película, no creo que nadie hubiera hecho sentir este papel tan matizado como ella y todo lo que hizo para que se sintiera tan duro como lo es que esta película se pueda sentir a través de toda ella, prácticamente vi la película por ella y puedo decir libremente que cada segundo de esta valió la pena, ahora estoy aún más contenta de saber que ganó un Oscar por ella porque realmente se lo merecía (¿no se nota que soy una fan girl? Ejem).

Honestamente esto no es exactamente una reseña o incluso un análisis, solo hablé de la trama, de Jasmine y de los temas de la misma, pero espero que todos los que lean este post lo tomen como una recomendación, por eso decidí no hablar directamente del final ni entrar en cada detalle de la historia, quiero que la gente vea y experimente por sí misma la grandeza que es esta película, realmente no podría recomendarla más y espero realmente que este post haga que al menos una persona le dé una oportunidad. Otra cosa que quiero agregar es que me sorprende un poco el hecho de que esta película sea considerada una "comedia-dramática"(?) Realmente nunca me reí viéndola, solo sentí tristeza y hasta rabia en algunos momentos, por lo que le diría a la gente que la tome más con un enfoque serio o que solo la vea con "lentes de drama".
