[ENG/ESP] American Psycho & Why You Should NEVER Trust a Rich Guy

When I started watching this movie, I didn’t know much what to expect, maybe for its tittle I could sense that what I was about to see and follow was a character who is a complete vase of the word “psycho” and to my surprise, even if it story followed this path it also showed me so much more than that.

American Psycho (2000) is a film about the young investment banker Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), who is nothing but a big bASTA- ahem, I mean, who is an egocentric, over-controlling, anti-social and a serial killer boiling up to hurt anyone he hates, but the problem is (that if you haven’t thought of how him being a killer capable to murder anyone he doesn’t like is already a BIG problem of course); Bateman hates everyone who is not himself. The introduction of his character, how he lives his life and what he thinks of those around him were quite curious but simple, hearing his own thoughts while he’s going thru his daily skincare routine and going into the smallest detail of it, but is also in this very moment were we get his first attempt at being honest both with us the audience and with himself, the tiny fraction of his persona showing when he starts to pull out his mask, and what is this truth that he tells us?, well, that all of that charisma and charm is nothing but a farce and the tools that he use to climb his way up to where he wants to go and will go out of this path to inflect the same pain he feels within his mental walls to others that annoy him.

On top of that he’s a big fan of listening music, maybe this is a way to feel peace and tranquility (fact that has make him a meme in our modern days if I must add ahem ) before he goes into the reunion room at his work just to get furious and jealous of his workmates business cards and how they got to make very expensive reservations to fancy restaurants and such, he’s got all the boxes checked right?, well, what do you think will happen when he finally snaps and no longer can’t control his frenzy and bloodlust?.

This movie is nothing new to the world, in fact is a pretty famous and well known movie, but it was only recently that I decided to watch it, I’ve seen too many memes of it, so it was enough determination to sit down and discover what it was about. At first I didn’t know the movie was a “satirical horror film” but started to get that at points that the movie started to feel a little bit ridiculous, even to fiction standards things like dragging out a body covered in sheets throughout a guarded hotel lobby leaving out a trail of blood and getting it in a taxi without anyone questioning it seem way to parodic to feel it serious, but this is not to reject or neglect of the quality of it, in fact I think it goes well with how the movie wants you to reflect on the ongoing events and where it all will land, and so it arrives the question: How sane is Patrick’s mental state?.

Which sounds like a silly question to make yourself while watching this movie, a movie about a serial killer who is not the most stable person walking in the earth, but, sometimes these so called dumb questions are the ones that we don’t consider the most, and at its core they are the ones that will flip our perspective and understanding of everything we have watched until this point.

The next paragraphs will contain spoilers of the end of the movie.

What I thought made this movie more interesting was the way everything went down in the second part of the movie until the very end of it so I wanted to discuss it and share what I gather after all since it pretty much ended with an ambiguous conclusion. For me it just seemed that Patrick was never a reliable narrator neither it was his perspective a lot of the things he did or the crimes he committed could have been just part of his imagination, we can’t negate that he’s out of his mind and that he’s not someone you could feel comfortable with, but throughout the movie get this this little moments where we might see that things aren’t going the way that Patrick thinks, hearing his own laughs thru the other end of a call, seeing how even if he talks about liking killing and dismembering people others will not give any reaction to it and just dismissed continuing with another topic, thinking an ATM ask him to feed it with a cat and probably being mistaken that he killed one of his workmate and believing it until the end just for to get proved wrong, are all little clues that he’s not living in the real world anymore but that he’s been trapped between reality and what he thinks and wish its real.

This is all speculation of course, I’m not really sure but it’s what I could gather from it, the movie was an adaptation of a novel, so I don’t know faithful the movie is to the novel or if the latter gave a more nuanced ending, but it’s still fun and makes the movie more worth it when it leaves you thinking back and forth of what it showed to you.

Truth be told, I don’t think I’m ever going to watch American Psycho again, I feel like once was enough but I do think is a fun movie to consider when you are thinking of watching movies with friends, so I really recommend it to anyone who haven’t seen it yet, at least like that you will understand why you shouldn’t trust a pretentious guy like Patrick (and no, don’t think about Patrick Star, that’s the wrong Patrick ).

Cuando empecé a ver esta película, no sabía mucho qué esperar, quizás por su título podía intuir que lo que iba a ver y seguir era un personaje que es un completo florero de la palabra "psicópata" y para mi sorpresa, aunque la historia seguía este camino también me mostró mucho más que eso.

American Psycho (2000) es una película sobre el joven banquero de inversiones Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), que no es más que un gran hijo dE- ejem, quiero decir, que es un egocéntrico, controlador en exceso, antisocial y un asesino en serie en pleno camino para hacer daño a cualquiera que odie, pero el problema es (que si no has pensado en que el hecho de que sea un asesino capaz de asesinar a cualquiera que no le guste ya es un GRAN problema por supuesto); Bateman odia a todos los que no son él mismo. La introducción de su personaje, cómo vive su vida y lo que piensa de los que le rodean fue bastante curiosa pero sencilla, escuchando sus propios pensamientos mientras hace su rutina diaria de cuidado de la piel y entrando en el más mínimo detalle de la misma, pero también es en este mismo momento donde tenemos su primer intento de ser honesto tanto con nosotros el público como con él mismo, la pequeña fracción de su persona que se muestra cuando empieza a sacar su máscara, y cuál es esa verdad que nos dice..., bueno, que todo ese carisma y encanto no son más que una farsa y al mismo tiempo herramientas que utiliza para escalar hasta dónde quiere llegar y se saldrá de ese camino para contagiar el mismo dolor que siente dentro de sus paredes mentales a los demás que le molestan.

Además, es un gran fanático de la música, tal vez la usa como una forma de sentir la paz y la tranquilidad (hecho que lo ha convertido en un meme en nuestros días si tengo que añadir ejem) antes de entrar en la sala de reuniones en su trabajo en la que sólo conseguirá terminar furioso y celoso de sus compañeros de trabajo por sus tarjetas de negocios y sobre la manera en la llegaron a hacer reservas muy caras a restaurantes de lujo y tal, tiene todas las casillas marcadas ¿no?, bueno, ¿qué crees que va a pasar cuando finalmente se quiebre y ya no pueda controlar su frenesí y sed de sangre?.

Esta película no es nada nueva para el mundo, de hecho es una película bastante famosa y conocida, pero fue hasta hace poco que me decidí a verla, he visto demasiados memes de ella así que fue suficiente determinación para sentarme a descubrir de qué se trataba. Al principio no sabía que la película era una "película de terror satírica" pero empecé a entender cuando en algunos momentos la película empezaba a sentirse un poco ridícula, incluso para los estándares de la ficción cosas como arrastrar un cuerpo cubierto de sábanas por el vestíbulo de un hotel vigilado dejando un rastro de sangre y meterlo en un taxi sin que nadie lo cuestione parecen ser cosas demasiado paródicas como para sentirlas serias, pero esto no es para rechazar o desestimar la calidad de la misma, de hecho creo que va bien con la forma en que la película quiere que reflexiones sobre los acontecimientos en curso y donde todo va a llegar, y así llega la pregunta: ¿Qué tan sano es el estado mental de Patrick?.

Lo cual parece una pregunta tonta para hacerse mientras se ve esta película, una película sobre un asesino en serie que no es la persona más estable que camina por la tierra, pero, a veces estas llamadas preguntas tontas son las que más no consideramos, y en el fondo son las que darán un vuelco a nuestra perspectiva y comprensión de todo lo que hemos visto hasta este momento.

Lo que me pareció que hizo esta película más interesante fue la forma en que todo se desarrolló en la segunda parte de la película hasta el final de la misma por lo que quería discutir y compartir lo que deduzco después de todo, ya que más o menos terminó con una conclusión ambigua. A mí me pareció que Patrick nunca fue un narrador fiable ni tampoco lo fue su perspectiva, muchas de las cosas que hizo o los crímenes que cometió podrían haber sido sólo parte de su imaginación, no podemos negar que está fuera de sus cabales y que no es alguien con quien te puedas sentir cómodo, pero a lo largo de la película tenemos estos pequeños momentos en los que podemos ver que las cosas no van como Patrick piensa, escuchando sus propias risas a través del otro extremo de una llamada, ver cómo aunque hable de que le gusta matar y descuartizar a la gente los demás no reaccionan ante ello y simplemente se desentienden continuando con otro tema, pensar que un cajero automático le pide que le alimente con un gato y probablemente equivocarse de que ha matado a uno de sus compañeros de trabajo y creerlo hasta el final solo para que le demuestren que está equivocado, son todas pequeñas pistas de que ya no vive en el mundo real sino que ha quedado atrapado entre la realidad y lo que él piensa y desea que sea real.

Todo esto es una especulación por supuesto, no estoy muy segura pero es lo que pude deducir de ella, la película fue una adaptación de una novela, así que no sé si la película es fiel a la novela o si esta última dio un final más matizado, pero igual es divertido y hace que la película valga más la pena cuando te deja pensando en lo que te mostró.

La verdad es que no creo que vuelva a ver American Psycho, siento que una vez fue suficiente, pero sí creo que es una película divertida para tener en cuenta cuando se piensa en ver películas con amigos, así que realmente la recomiendo a cualquiera que no la haya visto todavía, al menos así entenderán por qué no debe confiar en un tipo pretencioso como Patrick (y no, no piensen en Patricio Estrella, ese no es el mismo Patrick ).
