A tender, noble, hard-working, good man from Cleveland, Ohio, United States of America is accused overnight of being a co-participant in war crimes and crimes against humanity resulting from World War II. Obviously, he denies absolutely everything - how could it be otherwise? However, if there is one thing that always haunts us, it is the actions of our past. Good, not so good, questionable or evil. This is what Netflix's mini-documentary series concentrates on, and shows us what John Demjanjuk's affable, kind, seemingly good family man and grandfather is really like.

Buenas, no tan buenas, cuestionables o malvadas. En esto se concentra la mini serie documental de Netflix, y nos muestra lo que en realidad es el afable, ameno, aparentemente buen padre de familia y abuelo, de John Demjanjuk.
A subject who has several outstanding debts, and who in his younger years, as a former Soviet citizen, (born in what is now Ukraine, and formerly territory of the Union of Socialist and Soviet Republics, USSR) decided to join the invading side (the German army troops in the summer of 1941) and not only that, but to be part of the best orchestrated, planned and executed machinery of death in the history of mankind: the systematic multiple genocide carried out by the National Socialists in the occupied countries during the 6-year war period (1939-1945).Now, whoever watches the first few minutes of this Netflix mini documentary series, will find a man in his 70's, strong, healthy, loved by his family, and with a completely legal visa and at the time of the historical account of the documentary; he (Demjanjuk) even had US citizenship. The story of an immigrant, who "fled" from Europe devastated by the most tragic and deadly war in history. However, all is not as it seems. In fact, this elderly man, a retired former Ford worker in Ohio, has (in the trial prosecutor's own words) an open case against him of "6 million plaintiffs, who cannot stand in front of him. Because they are scattered in the forests of Poland and Belarus, in the form of ashes".Un sujeto que tiene varias deudas pendientes, y que en sus años de juventud, como ex ciudadano soviético, (nacido en lo que hoy es Ucrania, y antes territorio de la Unión de Repúblicas Socialistas y Soviéticas, URSS) decidió unirse al bando invasor (las tropas del ejército alemán en el verano de 1941) y no solo éso, sino formar parte de la maquinaria de la muerte mejor orquestada, planificada y ejecutada de la historia de la humanidad: el sistemático genocidio múltiple llevado por los nacionalsocialistas en los países ocupados durante el período de 6 años de guerra (1939-1945).Ahora bien, quien observa los primero minutos de esta mini serie documental de Netflix, dará con un señor en sus 70's, fuerte, sano, querido por su familia, y con un visado completamente legal y para el momento del recuento histórico del documental; incluso contaba (Demjanjuk) con la ciudadanía estadounidense. La historia de un inmigrante, que "huyó" de la Europa devastada por el conflicto bélico más trágico y mortal de la historia. No obstante, no todo es lo que parece. De hecho, este anciano hombre, extrabajador de la empresa Ford en Ohio, jubilado y retirado, tiene (en palabras del propio fiscal litigante) una causa abierta contra él de "6 millones de demandantes, que no pueden estar frente a él. Porque están esparcidos en los bosques de Polonia y de Bielorrusia, en forma de cenizas".
Undoubtedly, a rather serious and shocking accusation. The truth is that the pace of the 5-episode documentary miniseries, available on the streaming platform that is Netflix, is far from a "witch-hunt", as his (Demjanjuk's) own children alleged at the time. In fact, it was made, according to the documentary itself, through a complaint made to the Office of War Crimes in Washington DC, USA, by a character who triggers the search for those participants in what were once Nazi concentration camps. Specifically, those that were considered death camps: Treblinka, Belzec, Sobibor and Majdanek. Plus, the most infamous of them all: Auschwitz.If there is one thing that really stands out, and therefore I recommend this documentary mini-series, it is the focus on contrasts. Remember, in the Western justice system, and more precisely in the American justice system, if they can't prove something to you, you're simply not guilty. Even this guy, the accused, was extradited from Cleveland to Tel Aviv, Israel. There, he would be tried for crimes against humanity and come face to face with the survivors (10, 15 who were alive at the time) and get a conviction. This guy, he really had to go through all...Sin lugar a dudas, una acusación bastante seria e impactante. Lo cierto, es que el ritmo de la miniserie documental de 5 episodios, disponible en la plataforma de streaming, que es Netflix, dista muchísimo de una "caza de brujas", como sus propios hijos (los de Demjanjuk) alegaban en su momento. De hecho, fue realizada, según el propio documental, a través de una denuncia hecha a la Oficina de Crímenes de Guerra en Washington DC, Estados Unidos, por un personaje que desencadena la búsqueda de aquellos participantes de lo que en otrora fueran los campos de concentración nazis. Específicamente, aquellos que eran considerados campos de la muerte: como Treblinka, Belzec, Sobibor y Majdanek. Además, del más infame de todos: Auschwitz.Si hay algo que realmente destaco, y por tanto, recomiendo de esta miniserie documental, es el foco en los contrastes. Recuerden, que en el sistema de justicia occidental, y más precisamente en el estadounidense, si no te pueden demostrar algo, sencillamente no eres culpable. Incluso, este sujeto, el acusado, fue extraditado de Cleveland a Tel Aviv, en Israel. Ahí, sería juzgado por crímenes de lesa humanidad y enfrentado cara a cara con los supervivientes (escasos 10, 15 que vivían para aquél momento) y así lograr una condena. Este sujeto, en serio tuvo que pasar por todas...
I won't spoil the subject, because I highly recommend it. It's a well-made documentary gem, with excellent timing on the facts it presents. And with exclusive interviews with the lawyers, family members, prosecutors, and above all, with some of the judges in different instances whose task was to judge this character with all the procedures and guarantees that the law offers in democratic countries. On a personal level, far more than he ever gave to anyone who was ever his prisoner during the Second World War...Personally, I find this sub-genre of cinema, the documentary, as an escape from the monotony that we can encounter on a daily basis with so many remakes, spin-offs, superhero series and the like. And we get to see the psychological aspect of the community that still shelters him as a "respectable, family man". Not even the overwhelming piles of evidence (literally, not a literary device) against him could change the biased view they had of this guy. Just like John Demjanjuk's obvious manipulation of law enforcement officers and investigators, who went out of their way to show how a liar acts.No haré spoilers del tema, porque lo recomiendo encarecidamente. Es una joya documental bien hecha, con excelente timing en los hechos que presenta. Y con entrevistas en exclusiva con los abogados, familiares, fiscales, y sobre todo, con algunos de los jueces en distintas instancias que tenían como tarea juzgar a ese personaje con todos los procedimientos y garantías que la ley ofrece en países democráticos. A título personal, muchísimo más de lo que él, alguna vez dio a cualquier que haya sido su recluso alguna vez durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial...En lo personal, hallo este subgénero del cine, el documental; como un escape a la monotonía que podemos encontrarnos a diario con tantos remakes, spin-offs, series de superhéroes y cosas por el estilo. Y además, podemos ver el aspecto psicológico de la comunidad que aún lo cobija como un "hombre respetable y de familia". Ni siquiera las abrumadoras pilas de pruebas (literalmente, no es un recurso literario) en su contra pudieron cambiar la visión sesgada que tenían de este sujeto. Al igual, que la evidente manipulación que John Demjanjuk tuvo para con los agentes del orden y los investigadores. que hicieron lo posible por demostrar cómo actúa un mentiroso.
The Devil Next Door is not a title intended to "clickbait" you, not at all. But if I tell you the reason for this peculiar but powerful name, it wouldn't make much sense for you to watch it. What I can tell you is that it is heartbreaking, frustrating but above all, it shows a look into a past that we all wanted to bury, and that still has too many questions, too many riddles.... I mean, 6 million people killed for a creed? Not counting those of other faiths, cultures, sexual orientations, ethnicities, etc? And yet, in the 21st century, we still don't know for sure how many people participated directly or indirectly in the biggest death machine in the history of mankind. It gives a lot to think about.The Devil Next Door, no es un título con la intención de que "hagas clickbait", en absoluto. Pero si te digo el por qué de este peculiar pero poderoso nombre, no tendría demasiado sentido que lo miraras. Lo que sí te puedo adelantar, es que es desgarrador, frustrante pero sobre todo, muestra una mirada hacia un pasado que quisimos enterrar todos, y que aún tiene demasiadas preguntas, demasiados acertijos... Digo, ¿6 millones de personas asesinadas por un credo? Sin contar los de las demás creencias, culturas, orientaciones sexuales, etnias, etc... Y aún, en el siglo XXI, no sabemos a ciencia cierta cuántas personas participaron directa o indirectamente en la maquinaria de muerte más grande de la historia de la humanidad. Da mucho qué pensar.
