Hello Hive! After the Gay Pride day and almost sadly the end of Pride month, although diversity is celebrated 365 days a year, I wanted to participate in the initiative created by @mariblue, @yohadvartse and @ckairelys in which we are asked what we think is the best soundtrack of all time and why. I want to take this opportunity before I forget to invite @sara-escribe @universoperdido and @sacra97 to join this initiative.
When I saw the post of these girls the first thing that came to my mind was the movie I have chosen however, I must confess that I also thought of the soundtrack of movies like Enchanted starring in 2007 by Amy Adams and from which I have one of the songs or other lesser known movies like Waiting for Exhale from 1995, The Pracher's Wife from 1996 or maybe Matilda from 1997. But from the movie I chose I have fond memories and I also know all the songs to the point that I know how each song performed on the charts, the origin of their lyrics and what year they were released.
The 90's was an exciting decade for movies made for the masses and it was especially good for romantic movie soundtracks. The decade began with the great success of Pretty Woman in 1990 with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in the lead, with Roxxete and her anthem It Must have been Love enlivening the scenes, until the frenzy of 1997 Titanic with Kate Winslet and Leo Dicaprio directed by the great James Cameron, this film had another great singer in its soundtrack: Celine Dion and her unforgettable *My Heart Will go on... ....
But it is impossible not to mention the great success that had in 1992 a movie that many of us know for the success it had both in theaters and in music. I'm not talking about any other than The Bodyguard. Starring the great Kevin Costner and the unforgettable Whitney Houston who was the first black leading lady in the history of Hollywood and who also performed the A-side of an album that has been the best selling album in the 90's, the best selling album by a woman in history and the fourth best selling album overall with 45 million copies to her credit. It was also the first album to sell a million copies in just one week and no soundtrack has ever matched that feat.
The story very simple Rachel (Whitney) is a superstar pursued by a fan who tries to kill her, Rachel's team alarmed by the safety of the singer and her son decides to hire a bodyguard Frank(Kevin Costner) who will not leave her in the sun or shadows. The coexistence will make these 2 end up entangled in a passionate affair while we discover who are the villains.

Después del día del Orgullo Gay y de que ya casi tristemente acaba el mes del Orgullo, aunque se celebra la diversidad los 365 días del año no quería dejar de participar en la iniciativa que han creado @mariblue, @yohadvartse y @ckairelys en la cual se nos pregunta cual creemos es la mejor banda sonora de todos los tiempos y el por qué. Quiero aprovechar antes de que se me olvide de invitar a @sara-escribe @universoperdido y a @sacra97 para que se unan a esta iniciativa.
Cuando vi el post de estas chicas lo primero que se me vino a la mente fue la película que he elegido sin embargo, debo confesar que también pensé en la banda sonora de películas como Encantada protagonizada en 2007 por Amy Adams y de la cual se me cada una de las canciones o en otras películas menos conocidas como Waiting for Exhale de 1995, The Pracher’s Wife de 1996 o quizás Matilda de 1997. Pero de la película que elegí tengo buenos recuerdos y también se me todas las canciones hasta el punto que se el rendimiento que tuvo cada canción en los charts, el origen de sus letras y en qué año fueron estrenadas.
Los 90’s fue una década emocionante para el cine hecho para las grandes masas y sobre todo fue especialmente buena para las bandas sonoras de películas románticas. La década comenzó con el gran éxito que tuvo Mujer Bonita en 1990 con Richard Gere y Julia Roberts al frente, con Roxxete y su himno It Must have been Love amenizando las escenas, hasta llegar con el frenesí de 1997 Titanic con Kate Winslet y Leo Dicaprio dirigidos por el gran James Cameron esta película contó con otra gran cantante en su banda sonora: Celine Dion y su inolvidable My Heart Will go on…
Pero es imposible dejar de mencionar el gran éxito que tuvo en 1992 una película que muchos conocemos por el éxito que tuvo tanto en los cines como en la música. No estoy hablando de otra que no sea El Guardaespaldas. Protagonizada por el gran Kevin Costner y la inolvidable Whitney Houston quien fue la primera protagonista negra en la historia de Hollywood y además fue quien interpreto la cara A de un disco que ha sido el más vendido en la década de los 90’s, el más vendido por una mujer en la historia y el cuarto disco más vendido en general con 45 millones de copias en su haber. También fue el primer disco en lograr vender un millón de copias en solo una semana ninguna banda sonora ha logrado igualar tal hazaña.
La historia muy simple Rachel (Whitney) es una superestrella perseguida por un fan que intenta matarla, el equipo de Rachel alarmado por la seguridad de la cantante y su hijo decide contratar a un Guardaespaldas Frank(Kevin Costner) quien no la dejara ni a sol ni sombras. La convivencia hará que estos 2 acaben enredándose en un lio pasional mientras vamos descubriendo quienes son los villanos.
Why do I think it is the best soundtrack of all time?
First because it was a hit even though the movie was trashed by the critics (no one cares) everyone fell for Whitney's exquisite voice. Houston was not an experienced actress in fact it was very difficult to convince her. With a prominent career the singer was selling millions of records and receiving multiple awards for her voice, she was in her prime and white audiences were not going to reject her and I think it was a great choice. Whitney was going to play the character she knew best: the singer, with an impressive voice register The Voice as she was also known, she gave everything for the soundtrack of The Bodyguard to become a Legend.
¿Por qué creo que es la mejor banda sonora de todos los tiempos?
Primero porque fue un éxito aunque la película fue destrozada por la crítica (A nadie le importa) todos cayeron rendidos ante la exquisita voz de Whitney. Houston no era una actriz experimentada de hecho fue muy difícil de convencerla. Con una carrera prominente la cantante vendía millones de discos y recibía múltiple galardones por su voz, estaba en su mejor momento y el público blanco no la iba a rechazar y creo que fue un magnifica elección. Whitney iba a interpretar el personaje que mejor se sabía: el de cantante, con un registro de voz impresionante La Voz como también era conocida lo dio todo para que la banda sonora de El Guardaespaldas se convirtiera en una Leyenda.
The album begins with the last song we hear at the end of the movie I Will Always Love you a song released in 1974 by country singer Dolly Parton and that Whitney produced to make it better than it was. Held until the second 45 with only the singer's voice the song became along with the album #1 in almost every country in the world. The reason for the success is simple: Whitney Houston's voice seems to have been a gift from heaven and although the lyrics are very simple the interpretation transports you back in time. Today it is the best selling single by a woman in the history of music and won the song of the year award in 1994. The song also arrives at the climax of the movie at the end when Rachel is boarding the plane, the chords of the song start to play and before the climax of this beautiful ballad, the singer runs out and stops the plane to give a last hug to her beloved Frank.
El disco comienza con la última canción que escuchamos al final de la película I Will Always Love you una canción estrenada en 1974 por la cantante country Dolly Parton y que Whitney produjo para hacerla mejor de lo que era. Sostenida hasta el segundo 45 con solo la voz de la cantante la canción se convirtió junto con el disco en #1 en casi todos los países del mundo. La razón para el éxito es sencilla: La Voz de Whitney Houston parece haber sido un regalo del cielo y aunque la letra sea muy sencilla la interpretación te transporta en el tiempo hoy en día es el single más vendido por una mujer en la historia de la música y gano e premio a la canción del año en 1994. La canción también llega en un momento cumbre de la película en su final cuando Rachel está abordando el avión comienzan a sonar los acordes del tema y antes de que llegue el clímax de esta hermosa balada, la cantante sale corriendo parando el avión para darle el ultimo abrazo a su amado Frank.
The second single from the album is none other than I Have Nothing one of the most beautiful ballads I have ever heard in my life. This time it was an original song composed by David Foster and Linda Thompson that would also become a worldwide hit. The song is featured within the middle of the film, is passionate and is the main theme of the film for which Rachel would receive an Oscar in the film. Definitely one of my favorite songs on the soundtrack and as a curious fact Whitney did not write her songs but produced them internalizing in the process how she should sing each song.
El segundo single del disco es nada más y menos que I Have Nothing una de las baladas más hermosas que he escuchado en mi vida. Esta vez era un tema original compuesto por David Foster y Linda Thompson que llegaría también a ser un gran éxito mundial. La canción se presenta dentro de la mitad del filme, es pasional y es tema principal de la película por la que Rachel recibiría un Oscar en la película. Definitivamente uno de mis temas favoritas en la banda sonora y como dato curioso Whitney no escribía sus canciones pero las producía internalizando en el proceso como debía cantar cada tema.
The third single of the album would be again a cover this time of a disco singer much admired by Whitney, the great Chaka Khan. This song and I Will Always Love you had original videos, but the video of I'm Every Woman celebrates the black woman. I don't know at what point in the movie this song was enjoyed but it is an incredible pop mix and as a curious fact the members of the famous nineties group TLC and Chaka Khan herself appear in the video of the song.
El tercer single del disco seria de nuevo un cover esta vez de una cantante disco muy admirada por Whitney la gran Chaka Khan. Este tema y I Will Always Love you tuvieron vídeos originales, pero el video de I’m Every Woman celebra a la mujer negra. Este tema no note en que momento de la película fue disfrutado pero es una mezcla pop increíble y como dato curioso las integrantes del famoso grupo noventero TLC y la propia Chaka Khan aparecen dentro del video de la canción.
The fourth single follows in the vein of the first 2 ballads I Run to You my favorite song in the world because of the amount of memories it brings back. It is the most difficult song to sing in Whitney's repertoire so much so that she rarely got to sing it live however on the 25th anniversary album of the film 'Whitney Houston - I Wish You Love: More From The Bodyguard' released in 2017 there is a previously unreleased live version of this track. It can be enjoyed within the movie when Frank already starts to be attracted to Rachel and almost eats the TV while the video of this single comes on. It is perhaps one of the most beautiful ballads in music. Both I have Nothing and I run to You were nominated for an Oscar for best original song which would eventually win 'A Whole New World' the title song of Aladdin.
El cuarto single sigue la onda de las 2 primeras baladas I Run to You mi canción favorita en el mundo por la cantidad de recuerdos que trae. Es la canción más difícil de cantar del repertorio de Whitney tanto que en raras ocasiones llego a cantarla en vivo sin embargo en el disco del 25 aniversario de la película 'Whitney Houston - I Wish You Love: More From The Bodyguard' lanzado en 2017 existe una versión en vivo inédita de este tema. Se puede disfrutar dentro de la película cuando Frank ya comienza a sentirse atraído por Rachel y casi se come el televisor mientras sale el video de este single. Es quizás es una de las baladas más hermosas de la música. Tanto I have Nothing como I run to You fueron nominadas al Oscar como mejor canción original que finalmente ganaría 'A Whole New World' la canción principal de Aladdin.
With songs like these you get to better understand each of the scenes of the film even though they are independent and have nothing to do with each other. In that line is Queen of the Night a powerful song that we can enjoy while Rachel makes her iconic presentation in which she wears a beautiful armor and is attacked by hundreds of angry fans, while she is saved by Frank who carries her out of the enclosure. This scene has become one of those unforgettable scenes of the movie and served to give life to the famous poster of the film.
Con temas como estos se llega a entender mejor cada una de las escenas de la película aunque sean independientes y no tengan nada que ver entre ellos. En esa línea esta Queen of the Night una canción poderosa que podemos disfrutar mientras Rachel hace su icónica presentación en la que usa una hermosa armadura y es atacada por cientos de fans enardecidos, mientras es salvada por Frank quien la carga hasta sacarla del recinto. Esta escena se ha convertido en una de esas escenas inolvidables de la película y sirvió para darle vida al famoso poster del filme.
To finish side A of the album Whitney would choose Jesus Loves me a soulful version of a religious hymn composed in the mid-nineteenth century and dedicated to comfort the sorrows of a dying child and that the singer as always manages to improve with her angelic voice tone. In the film we can enjoy Whitney's voice singing a cappella this beautiful song in the company of the actress who played her sister in The Bodyguard. After this song the A side ends and the B side of the album begins with a selection of songs from other singers that did not have the same repercussion but that make up in integrity the wonderful thing that was this album.
Para terminar la cara A del disco Whitney elegiría Jesus Loves me una versión soul de un himno religioso compuesto a mediados del siglo XIX y dedicado a consolar las penas de un niño moribundo y que la cantante como siempre logra mejorar con su tono de voz angelical. En la película podemos disfrutar de la voz de Whitney cantando a capela este hermoso tema en compañía de la actriz que interpreto a su hermana dentro de El Guardaespaldas. Después de esta canción se termina la cara A y comienza la cara B del disco con una selección de canciones de otros cantantes que no tuvieron la misma repercusión pero que componen en integridad lo maravilloso que fue este disco.
"Why are you risking your life?" asks Rachel at some point to Frank "Because I can't sing" answers his Bodyguard. That's exactly what the movie is about people with real problems learning to love despite putting their careers before their personal lives, the 2 feel alive while working and are the best in their branch but what I am most grateful for The Bodyguard is that it opened doors for black women in a racist industry. Whitney was everything and her legacy will be her fabulous songs and I'm not going to lie to you this post is a public love letter for an endearing film that enjoys my full approval.
"¿Por qué te juegas la vida?" pregunta en algún momento Rachel a Frank "Porque no sé cantar" responde su Guardaespaldas. De eso precisamente trata la película de gente con problemas reales que aprende amar a pesar de anteponer su carrera a su vida personal, los 2 se sientes vivos mientras trabajan y son los mejores en su rama pero lo que más agradezco de The Bodyguard es que le haya abierto las puertas a las mujeres negras en una industria racista. Whitney lo era todo y su legado serán sus fabulosas canciones y no les voy a mentir este post es una carta de amor publica para una película entrañable que goza de mi aprobación absoluta.

La película y la canción principal fueron un éxito arrollador en su época. Tienen planificado hacer un remake de la película, pero no he investigado quienes serian los actores.
Ojalá logré igualar el éxito de la original. Yo vi hace algunos años que se estaba promocionando en España un musical inspirado en esta película.
Vi El guardaespaldas siendo muy pequeña, mis recuerdos son escasos pero aún así disfrute muchísimo leyendo tu post, si se quién es Whitney Houston y que ¡INCREÍBLE MUJER! talentosisima con una voz bendecida por los mismos angeles, pondré está película en mi lista de pendientes, muchas gracias por participar ✨💗

Lastimosamente no he tenido la oportunidad de ver este film, pero en definitiva sé sobre él, y creo que eso dice mucho del trabajo hecho para el tiempo en que fue realizado. Whitney, una artista impresionante, con una carrera impresionante. Mi canción favorita siempre será "I have nothing" porque me ha hecho llorar en múltiples ocasiones.
