¿Qué onda, Hivers? Ya venía siendo hora de que participara en uno de estos concursos, anteriormente nunca lo había hecho, pero probablemente ahora me vean con frecuencia con posts de este estilo. No pude aguantarme cuando supe que esta vez, estaría hablando sobre mi película de horror favorita. Y como lo que más me gusta hacer en esta plataforma es compartirles sobre las obras que más me fascinan, aquí vine con todas las ganas de hablarles de esta maravillosa y espeluznante película que, tardó un rato en convertirse en mi favorita, pero eventualmente su negrura terminó consumiendo a cualquier otra contendiente. Hoy quiero hablarles de THE VVITCH, espero que no sea demasiado tarde para ello.

What's up, Hivers? It's about time I participated in one of these contests, I've never done it before, but now you'll probably see me often with posts like this. I couldn't hold it in when I found out that this time, I'd be talking about my favorite horror movie. And since what I like to do most on this platform is to share with you about the works that fascinate me the most, here I came with all the desire to tell you about this wonderful and creepy movie that, took a while to become my favorite, but eventually its blackness ended up consuming any other contender. Today I want to talk to you about THE VVITCH, I hope it's not too late for that.

The VVitch es una película de horror estrenada en el año 2015, se encuentra bajo el ala de A24 y es la película debut del director Robert Eggers, el cual se volvería más popular posteriormente tras el estreno de su siguiente película: "The Lighthouse", también, la película está protagonizada por la popular Anya Taylor-Joy. The VVitch es una de las películas de horror que fueron estrenadas estos años como "respuesta" a la ola de cine de horror comercial basado en "screamers". The VVitch es una película de horror de fuego lento y con un enfoque mucho más artístico y simbólico. Robert Eggers es un prodigio en su materia y es algo que queda clarísimo al ver The VVitch, la cual, lamentablemente, no fue amada por el público de forma unánime. Aunque la crítica alabó a la película y esta tuvo un gran éxito en taquilla, gran parte de la audiencia no se vio satisfecha y la tachó de "aburrida". Eso no impidió que la película se llevara un número considerable de premios en diversos festivales y ceremonias de cine.

The VVitch is a horror movie released in the year 2015, it is under the wing of A24 and it is the debut film of director Robert Eggers, which would become more popular later after the release of his next film: "The Lighthouse", also, the film stars the popular Anya Taylor-Joy. The VVitch is one of the horror films that were released in recent years as a "response" to the wave of commercial horror films based on "screamers". The VVitch is a slow-burning horror film with a much more artistic and symbolic approach. Robert Eggers is a prodigy at his craft and it's something that becomes abundantly clear when watching The VVitch, which, unfortunately, was not unanimously loved by audiences. Although critics praised the film and it was a great success at the box office, a large part of the audience was not satisfied and labeled it as "boring". This did not prevent the film from winning a considerable number of awards at various film festivals and ceremonies.

The VVitch se ubica en Nueva Inglaterra, en el siglo XVII, gira en torno a una familia de 7 miembros la cual es expulsada de su colonia debido a un altercado sobre diferencias religiosas con las autoridades de dicha colonia. Se mudan a una granja cercana a unos densos bosques tras ser exiliados, y estando allí, intentan sobrevivir sus días. Estando allí, el séptimo miembro de la familia nace, tras unos meses, nuestra protagonista, Thomasin, está cuidando al bebé, cuando este desaparece misteriosamente. El bebé fue secuestrado por una bruja. Tras este suceso, la familia comienza a venirse abajo poco a poco. Thomasin es culpada por la desaparición de su hermano y las relaciones dentro de la familia comienzan a resquebrajarse, no solo tras este suceso, sino gracias a la fuerte pobreza a la que la familia se ve sometida tras haber sido expulsada de la colonia. Conforme el tiempo avance, los sucesos extraños seguirán teniendo lugar y la familia se romperá cada vez más.

The Vitch is set in New England, in the 17th century, and revolves around a family of 7 members who are expelled from their colony due to an altercation over religious differences with the colony's authorities. They move to a farm near some dense woods after being exiled, and while there, they try to survive their days. While there, the seventh member of the family is born, after a few months, our protagonist, Thomasin, is taking care of the baby, when he mysteriously disappears. The baby was kidnapped by a witch. After this event, the family begins to fall apart little by little. Thomasin is blamed for the disappearance of her brother and relationships within the family begin to crack, not only after this event, but thanks to the severe poverty to which the family is subjected after being expelled from the colony. As time progresses, strange events will continue to take place and the family will become more and more broken.

Esto probablemente sea un asunto un poco subjetivo, pero pienso defender aquellos atributos que personalmente, me causaron una enorme inquietud mientras veía esta película. Para empezar, The VVitch es el tipo de película de horror que te inquieta y te hace sentir tenso e incómodo. No es el tipo de película que te hace brincar de tu asiento, si no aquella que te pone imágenes y momentos tan desagradables que se te quedan grabadas en la mente.

This is probably a bit of a subjective matter, but I plan to defend those attributes that personally, caused me enormous unease while watching this film. For starters, The Vitch is the kind of horror movie that makes you uneasy and tense and uncomfortable. It's not the kind of movie that makes you jump out of your seat, but the kind that puts images and moments so unpleasant that they stick in your mind.

Uno de los atributos más atractivos de The VVitch es cómo esta presenta el horror. Las imágenes más desagradables, sangrientas o monstruosas, son presentadas de una forma directa, pero que no deja de ser sutil. La cinematografía juega mucho con las luces y te muestra solo un poco, pero no te lo muestra todo. Perpetuando la sensación de creer que estás viendo algo horrible, pero no ser capaz de verlo del todo, haciendo que la tensión nunca se vaya. Esto es algo que se hace inmediatamente presente en las primeras escenas, cuando vemos a "la bruja" por primera vez, en los primeros minutos de la película. Lo que vemos realmente es un cuerpo de una anciana, pero este está presentado de una forma tan inquietante, con una iluminación que favorece su apariencia monstruosa, la bruja se presenta moviéndose de manera extraña y haciendo sonidos desagradables, transformando esta en una escena que sin mostrarte demasiado, logra inquietarte muchísimo.

One of the most attractive attributes of The Vitch is how it presents horror. The most unpleasant, gory or monstrous images are presented in a straightforward, yet subtle way. The cinematography plays a lot with the lights and shows you just a little, but doesn't show you everything. Perpetuating the feeling of believing you are seeing something horrible, but not being able to see it at all, making the tension never go away. This is something that is immediately present in the first scenes, when we see "the witch" for the first time, in the first few minutes of the film. What we actually see is a body of an old woman, but this is presented in such an unsettling way, with lighting that favors her monstrous appearance, the witch is presented moving in a strange way and making unpleasant sounds, transforming this into a scene that without showing you too much, manages to unsettle you a lot.

Los aspectos técnicos y actorales también aportan muchísimo al aura inquietante de esta película. Pero un enorme fuerte de esta película es su sutil, pero poderosísima banda sonora. Realizada por Mark Korven, las canciones de esta película suenan de una forma muy sutil, no están presentes tan seguido, pero cuando lo están, dotan a las escenas de una atmósfera sumamente opresiva. Igualmente, la cinematografía es bastante inquietante a su manera, uno de mis momentos favoritos de la película, es la toma en la que el bebé de la familia desaparece. Hay una toma al rostro de Thomasin, ella está jugando con el bebé, tapándose los ojos y diciéndole "¡Bu!". Esto lo hace repetidas veces y en una ocasión, se tapa los ojos, Thomasin grita ¡Bu! y su rostro cambia por completo a una expresión de confusión. La película no se preocupa en mostrarnos inmediatamente lo que pasó, esa toma nos da unos segundos en los que no tenemos idea de qué acaba de pasar ni por qué Thomasin está así. Esta clase de recursos me parecen geniales porque es una forma de crear tensión sin mostrar nada horroroso, ni crear suspenso.

The technical and acting aspects also add a great deal to the haunting aura of this film. But a huge strength of this film is its subtle, yet powerful soundtrack. Crafted by Mark Korven, the songs in this film sound in a very subtle way, they are not present that often, but when they are, they give the scenes a very oppressive atmosphere. Likewise, the cinematography is quite haunting in its own way, one of my favorite moments in the film, is the shot where the baby of the family disappears. There is a shot to Thomasin's face, she is playing with the baby, covering her eyes and saying "Boo!" to it. She does this repeatedly and on one occasion, she covers her eyes, Thomasin yells Boo!" and her face changes completely to an expression of confusion. The film doesn't bother to immediately show us what happened, that shot gives us a few seconds where we have no idea what just happened or why Thomasin is like that. I think this kind of resourcefulness is great because it's a way to create tension without showing anything horrifying or creating suspense.

Existen muchas razones por las que puedo llamar a esta mi película de horror favorita. Muchas de ellas están presentes en la segunda mitad de la misma, pero no quiero contarles demasiado. Solo les puedo decir que la familia está cada vez más separada, cada vez suceden peores cosas y la presencia demoníaca de la bruja y de satanás no desaparece. La película además, está cargadísima de simbolismos, por ejemplo, cada personaje representa un pecado capital. Esta no solo es una efectiva película de horror lento, si no que también es una increíble obra de simbolismo y narrativa que puede ser exprimida constantemente. Puedes ver esta película varias veces y cada vez notar nuevos detalles y profundidades en la creación de la misma. Todo está perfectamente calculado y pensado. Por ello, The VVitch me parece increíble.

There are many reasons why I can call this my favorite horror movie. Many of them are present in the second half of it, but I don't want to tell you too much. I can only tell you that the family is more and more separated, worse and worse things happen and the demonic presence of the witch and Satan does not disappear. The film is also loaded with symbolism, for example, each character represents a cardinal sin. This is not only an effective slow horror film, but it is also an incredible work of symbolism and storytelling that can be squeezed out constantly. You can watch this film multiple times and each time notice new details and depths in the film's creation. Everything is perfectly calculated and thought out. That's why I find The VVitch incredible.
