Satan's Slaves (7.5/10) - Another excellent Indonesian horror film from the same creator of Impetigore.

Several days ago I saw my first ever movie from Indonesia called Impetigore and as a horror fan it was a great experience. I had previously researched its director/writer, Joko Anwar, and was aware of his other high-quality productions, such as Satan's Slaves, which is the film I saw yesterday, and The Queen of Black Magic.

While watching Satan's Slaves, I was expecting an even better movie compared to Impetigore but I would put them on an equal level. I mean, both of them are equally good and I find it hard to decide which one is the best, Impetigore does have a much better beginning though.

The story in Satan's Slaves is about a family going through a very difficult situation. The mother is very sick and they are living in their grandmother's house to try to cut expenses and cover the medical treatment. Their financial situation is looking very dire and the mother doesn't show symptoms of improving.

What they don't know though is that the problems related to her mother are only just beginning. The dark plot reminded me of the movie Hereditary but the way it is explored is completely different. There are very dark forces surrounding this innocent family and important as well as traumatic discoveries about their past will be revealed as the story advances.

The scary scenes were very cool, however, after watching so many horror movies and series throughout my life, it is difficult to encounter something entirely new. Some of the scenes reminded me of the Ring movie, and it was easy to figure out when a jumpscare was about to appear. However, the story was very well written and the number of horror scenes was satisfactory. This was a proper horror film and I am sure most fans of the genre will have a good time watching it.

If you enjoy the horror genre I recommend you to check this film out. I would also recommend watching Impetigore which, as I mentioned before, is from the same creator. I plan to see the last film by Joko Anwar, The Queen of Black Magic, soon enough and I will be writing about it as soon as I can.

• Very entertaining horror story with several spooky scenes.

The worst

• Some acting from the younger characters wasn't very good in certain scenes.
• The beginning was slower than what I was expecting.
