It is typical for some films to be categorized as horror simply because they have paranormal elements. I believe this one does belong to the horror genre but that doesn't mean it can actually scare people. Its horror scenes are tame and not groundbreaking in the least.
I am finding it hard in recent times to find proper horror production that can leave me satisfied. I have understood since several years ago that producing a good horror story is very challenging, but despite that, I do think there is a lack of high-quality content belonging to that genre. Hopefully, that can change in the next months since there are cool horror productions that will be released soon enough.
Main names associated with the film
This film is a small Korean production so there aren't many people involved in its creation. The director and the writer are the same person, Kim Tae-hyung. Surprisingly, this person has never written nor directed any other production apart from this one. This was his debut, and I gotta say it was quite an ambitious one.
Lee Sung-min plays one of the main characters in the story. He is a very experienced actor and has worked in more than 60 different productions since the beginning of the 2000s. Some of his recent productions where he has worked are the series Money Game, The Man Standing Next, and the series called Memory.
The other main character in the film is played by Nam Da-reum. He is also an experienced actor after working in around 30 productions since the late 2000s. In recent years, he has also worked in the Korean series Start-Up, Hotel Del Luna, and Beautiful World.
Another member of the cast I would like to mention is Kim Yoo-jeong, like the other 2, she is also very experienced but mostly unknown due to the fact she only works in productions for the Korean market. She has previously worked in the series Backstreet Rookie, Clean with Passion for Now, and in Angry Mom. I decided to mention this actress because I liked how she played her role even though she didn't have many lines throughout the film.
Es típico que algunas películas se clasifiquen como de terror simplemente porque tienen elementos paranormales. Creo que esta sí pertenece al género de terror, pero eso no significa que pueda asustar a la gente. Sus escenas de terror son mansas y no revolucionarias en lo más mínimo.
En los últimos tiempos me está resultando difícil encontrar una producción de terror adecuada que pueda dejarme satisfecho. He entendido desde hace varios años que producir una buena historia de terror es un gran desafío, pero a pesar de eso, creo que hay una falta de contenido de alta calidad que pertenezca a ese género. Con suerte, eso puede cambiar en los próximos meses, ya que hay producciones de terror geniales que se lanzarán lo suficientemente pronto.

What was the movie about?
The film is about the struggle of 2 monks when they are forced to prevent an ancient evil force from regaining the powers it lost thousands of years ago. The beginning of the film is a quick introduction to this story. Many centuries ago, Buddha himself needed to battle against an evil "monster" that wanted to cause a lot of suffering to humanity.
This "monster" or evil force, is immortal but it can be subdued and its powers can be removed. The origin of this monster is not completely explained, it is just briefly mentioned in the beginning. I would have preferred a deeper look into what motivates this evil force, what are its origins, and what are its motives to cause suffering to humanity? There must be a reason behind all of this.
Since Buddha could not kill him many centuries ago, what he did was to take away its eyes and hid them in separate locations on our planet. Without its eyes, the evil force would be unable to do anything and humanity would be able to live in peace, protected from this paranormal being.
During all of these centuries there have been people serving as guardians to prevent this evil force from regaining its powers, generation after generation there have been monks who are aware of this threat and understand the enormous responsibility they have. Their lives are full of sacrifice but they do it because it is their calling, their pledge. These are people with strong principles and a deep sense of discipline.
In today's time, the evil force has found an opportunity to return and regain the powers it lost centuries ago thanks to Buddha, and the only people standing in its way are just 2 humble monks who live very isolated lives. One of them is an experienced guy, probably around 50 years old, with a tragic past but enough knowledge to understand what needs to be done when the threat comes. The other monk is much younger and can be considered an apprentice rather than a monk, this is the silly character in the film, and several times he will show an immaturity that didn't quite fit his character.
These 2 will work together in the city, to discover what is really taking place and what can be done to stop something horrible from happening. They are facing a paranormal power with bad intentions so they have a big disadvantage against their enemy.
¿De qué trataba la película?
La película trata sobre la lucha de 2 monjes cuando se ven obligados a evitar que una antigua fuerza maligna recupere los poderes que perdió hace miles de años. El comienzo de la película es una rápida introducción a esta historia. Hace muchos siglos, el propio Buda estuvo obligado a luchar contra un "monstruo" maligno que quería causar mucho sufrimiento a la humanidad.
Este "monstruo" o fuerza maligna, es inmortal pero puede ser sometido y sus poderes pueden ser removidos. El origen de este monstruo no se explica completamente, solo se menciona brevemente al principio. Hubiera preferido una mirada más profunda a lo que motiva esta fuerza maligna, cuáles son sus orígenes y cuáles son sus motivos para causar sufrimiento a la humanidad. Debe haber una razón detrás de todo esto.
Dado que Buda no pudo matarlo hace muchos siglos, lo que hizo fue quitarle los ojos y esconderlos en lugares separados de nuestro planeta. Sin sus ojos, la fuerza maligna no podría hacer nada y la humanidad podría vivir en paz, protegida de este ser paranormal.

Hoy en día, la fuerza maligna ha encontrado la oportunidad de regresar y recuperar los poderes que perdió hace siglos gracias a Buda, y las únicas personas que se interponen en su camino son solo 2 humildes monjes que viven vidas muy aisladas. Uno de ellos es un tipo experimentado, probablemente de unos 50 años, con un pasado trágico pero con los conocimientos suficientes para comprender lo que hay que hacer cuando llega la amenaza. El otro monje es mucho más joven y puede ser considerado un aprendiz más que un monje, este es el personaje tonto de la película, y varias veces mostrará una inmadurez que no encajaba con su personaje.
Estos 2 trabajarán juntos en la ciudad para descubrir qué está sucediendo realmente y qué se puede hacer para evitar que suceda algo horrible. Se enfrentan a un poder paranormal con malas intenciones por lo que tienen una gran desventaja frente a su enemigo.
The film provides a couple of nice twists but nothing too mind-blowing or groundbreaking. These were just small surprises that made the plot a bit more interesting but that's about it. When it comes to horror, they only used one trick to try and scare people, but this was more like a gimmick because there were no reasons for people to put that "scary" face gesture time and time again.
There are scenes that clearly belong in the horror genre, that's why I believe this film is properly categorized as horror, but that doesn't mean it is a scary film. The "scary" scenes use some CGI in the face of the character, and this makes it look a bit fake. There was 1 scene I enjoyed that took place on some street but it only lasted like 10 seconds and I simply enjoyed it because it was a good concept of a horror scene.
The plot has some parts that are hard to grasp because these aren't told in a properly organized manner, sometimes the story can be even a bit messy, but this shouldn't completely prevent the viewer from enjoying the film.
How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?
The performance of the cast was from regular to a bit disappointing. I didn't like how the younger monk acted even though he was participating in something extremely important. There is a police officer that also has a weak performance, and one cool character has fewer lines than what I would have preferred.
The settings were nice, some scenes take place in a monastery, others in the city and then we go to some woods. The scenery is very varied and I liked that. The camera work, on the other hand, was completely generic, there was nothing special about it. I believe the lack of experience in the director might have something to do with this. However, good horror doesn't necessarily require excellent camera work, the problem in this film is that the horror wasn't that great in the first place.
Final thoughts
The film can be enjoyable for people who are in the mood for a paranormal thriller, but it is far from being considered as one of the best of the genre. For me, it was an acceptable watch simply because I like this type of story, but I felt like it could have been much better if the horror was more hardcore, the plot was more organized, and if the performance of some members of the cast was better. I don't regret watching this film, but I would have preferred for it to be much better since there is a lot of room for improvement.
The new horror production I plan to watch in the next few weeks is only the new American Horror Story season. If a new and promising horror production is released in the short term and if I plan to see it I will be mentioning it in a future post.

La película ofrece un par de giros agradables, pero nada demasiado alucinante o innovador. Estas fueron solo pequeñas sorpresas que hicieron que la trama fuera un poco más interesante, pero eso es todo. Cuando se trata de horror, solo usaron un tipo de gesto para tratar de asustar a la gente, pero esto fue más como un truco porque no había razones para que la gente pusiera ese gesto de cara "aterradora" una y otra vez.
Hay escenas que claramente pertenecen al género de terror, por eso creo que esta película está debidamente categorizada como de terror, pero eso no significa que sea una película que de miedo. Las escenas "aterradoras" usan algo de CGI en la cara del personaje, y esto hace que parezca un poco falso. Hubo una escena que disfruté que tuvo lugar en una calle, pero solo duró como 10 segundos y simplemente la disfruté porque era un buen concepto de escena de terror.
La trama tiene algunas partes que son difíciles de entender porque no se cuentan de una manera organizada adecuadamente, a veces la historia puede ser incluso un poco desordenada, pero esto no debería evitar por completo que el espectador disfrute de la película.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco, la ambientación y el trabajo de cámara?
La actuación del elenco fue de regular a algo decepcionante. No me gustó cómo actuó el monje más joven a pesar de que estaba participando en algo extremadamente importante. Hay un oficial de policía que también tiene un desempeño débil, y un personaje interesante tiene menos líneas de las que hubiera preferido.
Los escenarios eran agradables, algunas escenas se desarrollan en un monasterio, otras en la ciudad y luego nos vamos a unos bosques. El paisaje es muy variado y eso me gustó. El trabajo de la cámara, por otro lado, fue completamente genérico, no tenía nada de especial. Creo que la falta de experiencia del director podría tener algo que ver con esto. Sin embargo, un buen horror no requiere necesariamente un excelente trabajo de cámara, el problema en esta película es que el horror no fue tan bueno en primer lugar.
Reflexiones finales
La película puede ser disfrutable para las personas que estén de humor para un thriller paranormal, pero está lejos de ser considerada como una de las mejores del género. Para mí, fue una experiencia aceptable simplemente porque me gusta este tipo de historia, pero sentí que podría haber sido mucho mejor si el horror fuera más duro, la trama estuviera más organizada y si la actuación de algunos miembros del elenco fuera mejor. No me arrepiento de ver esta película, pero hubiera preferido que fuera mucho mejor ya que hay mucho margen de mejora.
La nueva producción de terror que planeo ver en las próximas semanas es solo la nueva temporada de American Horror Story. Si se lanza una nueva y prometedora producción de terror en el corto plazo y si planeo verla, la estaré mencionando en una publicación futura.

No he visto horror koreano últimamente. De ese lado del mundo me gustan mas los thriller policiales o historias sobre mafias. Mas tarde daré una mirada a las producciones asiáticas disponibles para ver si logro encontrar algo que llame mi a atención.
Otra producción de Korea que planeo empezar a ver pronto es la serie de zombies Kingdom. Al parecer ha sido muy bien recibida.
ah la serie yo comencé a verla, pero la abandone, creo que a mitad de la primera temporada debo retomarla ( verla desde el principio) y ponerme al día con todo. Cuando la estrenaron estaba yo pasando por algunos problemas y no logro engancharme, pero creo que debo darle la oportunidad.
Los coreanos son bastante buenos haciendo historias con zombies, esa es una de las razones que me convencieron de verla.
