Not too long ago there was a new British production that seemed like a promising new addition to this genre. It didn't have too many well-known people working on the film but I read several good things about it and figured it might be a good idea to give it a watch and see for myself how good it was.
I would describe this film as a psychological thriller that uses a bit of gore as a way to construct the story and not as the main goal of it. There is no gorefest in this film, what we can find is an interesting development regarding the psychological state of the main character that certainly deserves the attention of the viewers.
Main names associated with the film
This is a small production so there are no big names associated with it but sometimes small productions are well worth the watch. The director is called Prano Bailey-Bond, and this is her first time directing a full-length film. Her previous works are a bunch of shorts and she also directed one episode of a horror mini-series called Fright Bites. I believe she has the potential to continue creating more films belonging to the horror and psychological thriller genres and I hope I can see more productions directed by her in the near future. With Censor she did a nice job.
The writers are Prano Bailey-Bond again and Anthony Fletcher. Prano's experience as a writer is even smaller than her experience as a director. Her only previous work as a writer was in one of her shorts and that's it. Something similar could be said about Anthony, his previous writings are all for shorts, including those directed by Prano, and there is one small film that didn't receive any recognition.
These 2 are used to work together creating short stories and Censor was the first time they ventured into a full-length film. They certainly have the potential of becoming a fantastic duo and Censor could be the beginning of a great partnership between them.
When it comes to the cast, there aren't many characters in the film and the only one worth mentioning is the main character is played by Niamh Algar. She has been very active in the past few years but the main productions with her were the series Raised by Wolves where she plays a secondary character and the recently releases film Wrath of Man. Censor is one if not the most important role in her career so far.
Censor has a rookie director and writers, and an actress looking for the first major hit in her career with her in the main role. It was a good opportunity for all of them to show their talents to the world and gain levels of recognition they have never achieved in the past.

What was the movie about?
The film is set a few decades in the past, during the years of Margaret Thatcher as the Prime Minister of the UK. The main character works as a censor regulating the violent scenes from films and they decided if these are accepted or rejected. She spends all her working time looking at violent scenes and this probably can have an effect on most people, even if it is subconscious and they don't realize it.
In real life, there are still similar jobs where people need to check the content uploaded online and see if it is acceptable or it needs to be banned. There are bots that can automatically analyze and decided whether to accept the content but I believe these bots need to be supervised by real humans to make sure the work is done properly. In these real-life jobs, these people are exposed to all sorts of disturbing content including all the macabre things you can imagine and other stuff much worse than that. Some people simply cannot handle this job and they even have the risk of getting traumatized as the result of constantly having to watch disturbing content.
Back to the Censor movie, the main character is going through the same troubling experience with the main difference being that the scenes she regulates are fake ones from movies but they are very realistic nonetheless.
This character also has a deep trauma in her past because her sister went missing when they were just kids and she hasn't got over this huge loss even though she is now an adult woman. She has some deep regret about the decisions she took before her sister disappeared and sadly for her, she isn't receiving any proper psychological help that could make it easier for her to overcome this challenging mental state.
If that wasn't worrisome enough, she begins to become stressed as a result of some media attention related to her work as a censor that puts into question her criteria when deciding what violent scene is acceptable and what isn't. Let's take a moment to appreciate her current state.
She has deep trauma from her past she is unable to overcome, this alone puts her in a very vulnerable psychological condition, she also has a potentially disturbing job where she is exposed day after day to horrible violent scenes that she needs to review, and now, she is going through a period of unwanted media attention for a decision she took regarding one of the films she reviewed. When looked at these circumstances in hindsight, it is clear this was simply too much for any person to handle.
The film begins to get really interesting when one day while watching yet another violent film to review some of its scenes, there is a particular moment where something clicks inside her mind and disturbs her to the point of vomiting. There are pieces moving inside her mind and it has all the looks of not being good.

She will then embark on a lonely journey researching some of these films and trying to confirm her wish that her sister is still alive. As a censor, she has access to all the necessary information about the people working in those films. She will go to extremes to prove she is right and the type of decisions she will take is going to be insane. She is incapable of doing some basic psychological self-analysis even after her parents tell her to stop with the topic and accept the loss.
The film is a wonderful exploration of what an unstable person can go through when the circumstances trigger their irrational beliefs and these, in turn, cause some crazy decisions. The way the film shows what's really happening, in the end, was very creative and original. I really loved that ending.
Something I didn't enjoy about the film is how easy it was to cause havoc during the climax moments. One could think there are usually security measures to prevent the type of things that we will see in Censor's climax. Apart from this, I enjoyed how the ending of this story unfolded.
How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?
The main actress, Niamh Algar, did a fine performance. She properly portrays the troubled mental state her character is going through during the movie, and in the intense scenes, she did a good job adopting stressed facial expressions.
The settings weren't too inspiring but this shouldn't be a surprise given the job of the main character and how the entire plot revolves around this job. There is an important scene in a forest but due to the way it was filmed it didn't look like real forest, it wasn't difficult to remember this was happening in a studio. The camera work was regular too. It was not bad but not special neither. This is OK because the director was a rookie and she will probably get better and she gains more experience.
Final thoughts
Censor isn't a conventional film. It can be slow at times and isn't really scary so I wouldn't describe it as a horror film. I think it is an acceptable psychological thriller with a nice story and a very cool ending. I would only recommend this film for people interested in watching a small psychological thriller with indie feels. The gore isn't too intense, it is nothing like the Saw or the Hostel movies. The most interesting parts of this film are the mental changes the main character goes through and the events that trigger those important changes.

La actriz principal, Niamh Algar, hizo una excelente actuación. Ella retrata correctamente el estado mental atribulado que atraviesa su personaje durante la película, y en las escenas intensas, hizo un buen trabajo adoptando expresiones faciales estresadas.
La ambientación no fue demasiado inspiradora, pero esto no debería ser una sorpresa dado el trabajo del personaje principal y cómo toda la trama gira en torno a este trabajo. Hay una escena importante en un bosque, pero debido a la forma en que fue filmada no parecía un bosque real, no fue difícil recordar que esto estaba sucediendo en un estudio. El trabajo de cámara también fue regular. No estuvo mal pero tampoco especial. Esto está bien porque la directora era un novato y probablemente mejorará y obtendrá más experiencia.
Reflexiones finales
Censor no es una película convencional. A veces puede ser lenta y no da miedo, así que no la describiría como una película de terror. Creo que es un thriller psicológico aceptable con una bonita historia y un final genial. Solo recomendaría esta película a las personas interesadas en ver un pequeño thriller psicológico con sensación de ser una producción indie. El gore no es demasiado intenso, no se parece en nada a las películas Saw o Hostel. Las partes más interesantes de esta película son los cambios mentales que atraviesa el personaje principal y los eventos que desencadenan esos cambios importantes.

Me gusto mucho Censor. Es el tipo de película que me atrae. Un buen debut de la directora, y ala sigo en twitter para estar atento a su próximo proyecto. De la actriz, te recomiendo ver la miniserie británica The Virtues , fue en ese trabajo que me llamo la atención, porque hace un personaje fabuloso . El protagonista principal es Stephen Graham, pero es uno de esos demoledores dramas británicos. Solo son 4 episodios.

Fíjate yo ví hace tiempo no recuerdo si fue un teaser o imagenes, el hecho es que me puse a ver cosas de esa peli, y ten en cuenta que yo nunca me leí el libro ni tampoco ví la peli original de hace varias décadas, solo sé que esta es una gran historia de scifi. Bueno, me puse a ver info y de repente vi al gusano gigante y me quede todo sorprendido, pero luego pensé: coye si yo no hubiera visto a ese gusano gigante la sorpresa al ver la peli hubiera sido intensa. Y la verdad que me arrepentí de haberme puesto a ver cosas de la peli, porque haber visto a gusano seguro me estropeo lo que pudo haber sido una gran sorpresa. La peli la voy a ver segurísimo, pero no creo que revise más info sobre ella para evitar estropearme más sorpresas.
Si, es el bendito problema con loa avances. Muestran demasiado, cosas que si la vez en la peli, te pueden sorprender. Pero como ya se vieron en los avances, pues el factor sorpresa desaparece.
Acabo de ver el trailer, es mejor que no lo mires. Expone muchas cosas. En este caso no me importa mucho, porque vi la vieja versión y aya se de que trata la historia. Espera el estreno.
Denis Villeneuve ahora parece seducido mas por impresionar visualmente, prefiero sus primeras películas, pero espero que lo haga bien con este film.
Y bueno la verdad que lo hace bastante bien haha, tanto Arrival como Blade Runner 2049 tuvieron visuales espectaculares, pero mi peli favorita de él es la de Prisoners por la excelente trama, aunque Arrival también me gusto muchísimo. Esperemos que Dune pueda competir con estas en cuanto a calidad general, yo creo que apunta a ser de los mejores films del año, quizás el mejor de todos, ya veremos.
