Did you enjoy Fight Club? Did you enjoy Donnie Darko? If that’s the case, then you will also enjoy this film. It is not as good as those 2 films which are considered masterpieces but since this type of story isn’t that common, it is always appreciated when a new one comes out.

The main character in Buster's Mal Heart is played by Rami Malek, the same actor who plays the main role in the series Mr. Robot. In the movie, he appears to be a regular guy working as a night concierge in a hotel. He has a wife and daughter and for the most part, it looks like his life is very normal.

This movie isn't linear, so the way new scenes are showed to the viewer can be confusing and some of the scenes aren't to be taken literally but rather symbolically. There are different ways to interpret this movie and reaching a consensus about what's going on might be hard, there are just so many things that can be interpreted in different ways.

The creators made this movie too complicated and this reduces the enjoyment must people will feel when watching it. The epic twist in Fight Club changes everything in that movie but it didn't make the story impossible to understand without having to ponder about it for quite some time. With Buster's Mal Heart, sometimes it is as if the movie is dipping its toes in the fantasy realm but without actually leaving the psychological thriller genre and without actually reaching anything related to real fantasy.

Some scenes take place inside the mind of the main character, and whether he is inside a time loop or we are simply experiencing different timelines joined together is up to discussion. I think it would have been better to not leave so many things unexplained but the film is still entertaining as it is.

If you like movies like the ones I mentioned at the beginning make sure to watch this film as well but adjust your expectations. This is far from being a masterpiece and it's more confusing than most viewers would prefer, even to those that enjoy mind-bending narratives. Also, if you haven't seen Fight Club or Donnie Darko do yourself a favor and watch those films before watching this one.

The best

  • Good performance from the main actor.
  • This is a type of film that makes people think in order to understand what's happening.

The worst

  • Too confusing.
  • The big twist was something kind of expected.
