Life by the sea 🌊
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a lighthouse?
There is much more to it than just having a home on the edge of the ocean. Lighthouses are often out in the middle of the ocean all by themselves. This leads to a desolate life with true isolation. There is a plethora of new things that one must keep up with to maintain a safe space of living.
Lighthouses are something you probably haven’t learned much about through your life so far. If you’re curious to find out more about how life inside and around a lighthouse is, then the following movie recommendations will surely interest you.
This list is comprised of three movies set around a lighthouse. All three are entirely different types of films, but each one shows a lot about how lighthouses function. If you were to watch all three of these films, you will surely know a whole lot more about lighthouses. Be prepared to pick up some funny new words for your vocabulary as well, lighthouse life has its own glossary of terminology.
Lets get things started with some more details about these films, all of which are currently available to stream on Prime Video.
1. Cold Skin
A young man arrives at a remote island to take a post of weather observer only to find himself defending the watchtower from deadly creatures which live in the island shores.
This film was released in 2017 and is set in Antarctica during the year 1914.
You’d be surprised to find out that Antarctica isn’t always freezing cold. This island is suspicious right from the start and you will learn why if you are patient with this artistic film.
The creatures that inhabit this arctic island are both beautiful and deadly. Wait until you see them in action for the first time. Perhaps they are more human than they seem or maybe they belong deep beneath the sea away from humans.
2. The Vanishing
Three lighthouse keepers on the remote Flannan Isles find a hidden trunk of treasure, leading to their mysterious disappearance.
This film based on a true story was released in 2018 and set on a Scottish island during the year 1900.
The men stationed at this lighthouse are quite the odd bunch. Each one has a distinctively different personality, this causes the plot to get interesting very quickly.
You would think that being out on a far away island all alone would mean no visitors. You would be wrong to assume this and only time will tell if said visitors wish to play nice.
3. The Lighthouse
Two lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious island.
This film was released in 2019 and is set in New England during the 1890s.
Prepare yourselves for a different approach. This film is in black and white and shot in a square format. This helps get across just how bleak this island is. The true grittiness is apparent throughout this film. The work required to maintain the lighthouse is extremely intense.
The two men begin to butt heads right away. Expect to find some humor hidden within this film. Two men alone equals a lot of odd instances, especially when they both seem to enjoy annoying one another and begin to go stir crazy.
Arc of Visibility 🌌

I’ve only heard about the last one but this got me interested in all of them. Need to add them to my list. In a group chat with a couple of friends one of them loved the Lighthouse while the other turned it off within five minutes. I guess it’s not for everyone.
I had no idea that there were so many lighthouse films released around the same time. Surprising enough, they are all drastically different too.
The Lighthouse is something that people used to perfect 4K films will struggle to accept. I think it's for true film buffs, it has it strengths and weaknesses for sure.
I'll be giving it a shot nonetheless! I have no issue playing old and pixelated video games in the 4:3 format. I pitched Cold Skin for my gf and she immediately wanted to see it. She loves anything with zombies/mutants/monsters.
Great bro, what an awesome post, thanks for recommending these 3 movies about lighthouses, I have always dreamed of seeing a lighthouse in person since I was a little kid.
They have always caught my attention, lighthouses convey desolation and isolation, a healthy peace that no one disturbs it.
I want to see these 3 movies that you recommend, regards brother.
The only lighthouses I have seen in person were no longer in use. Even then I haven't seen many. They are fascinating though. I think you will enjoy these movies. Isolation is the main theme in all of them, but each one takes it down their own distinct path.
great brother, thanks for the recommendation
The Lighthouse is excellent. Dafoe and Pattinson are phenomenal in that movie.
That was my least favorite of the three, but I did see why any enjoyed it so much. It was a different kind of movie for the modern age, that's for sure.
Three great recommendations (especially the third movie, which is quite dark).
#3 is one of those movies that if you approach it with the mindset of "okay we are going back in time" then you can definitely appreciate it. We nearly turned it off because it was black and white and not widescreen, but luckily adjusted to that those facts on no time.
