I've wanted to see this film ever since I heard about it when it premiered at Cannes, not only because it won the Best Screenplay award there, but also because it has an incredible leading duo (Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley), it's an exclusive MUBI premiere and the central theme, at least the one promoted in the trailers, seemed super interesting to me: would you like to be a better version of yourself, younger, more beautiful, more perfect? But who wouldn't? The real question, the one that would make us think long and hard, would be: what would you be willing to change?
Quería ver esta película desde que supe de su existencia cuando se estrenó en Cannes, no sólo porque allí ganó el premio al Mejor Guión, sino también porque tiene una dupla protagonista increíble (Demi Moore y Margaret Qualley), es un estreno xclusivo de MUBI y el tema central, al menos el que se promocionaba en los avances, me parecía super interesante: ¿te gustaría ser una mejor versión de ti, más joven, más hermosa, más perfecta? Pero, ¿a quién no? La verdadera pregunta, la que nos pondría a pensar largo y tendido, sería ¿qué estarías dispuesto a dar a cambio?
The Substance tells the story of Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a film and television star who, after a successful acting career, takes up an exercise program that is broadcast on television. The film's introduction, a sequence of images seen from above, conveys to us with great visual force and without the need for words the central drama of Elisabeth's life. Not only has she passed her moment of greatest fame, but she's aging and although turning fifty doesn't mean the end of a life, in the world of entertainment it can be a condemnation. And for her it is. The producer of her program wants to renew the image of the show and the network, so he fires Elisabeth and begins to look for someone who is at least twenty years younger, which leads the actress to sink into sadness and frustration. What to do now? When what you have been doing for so many years ends, the only thing you know how to do, how to move on? Her lonely life feels emptier now, and even though she has all the time in the world to do other things, she can't shake off the defeat of being discarded. That's when an alternative appears. Someone gives her a piece of information and a phone number, and in this way, Elisabeth comes into contact with an organization (a company? a man?) that has developed a mysterious drug that offers her exactly what she wants more than anything in the world: a younger, more beautiful version of herself. Or at least that's what she thinks when she orders the product and tries it with consequences as unexpected as they are irreversible.
The Substance cuenta la historia de Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), una estrella de cine y televisión que, después de una exitosa carrera actoral, se dedica a un programa de ejercicios que se transmite por televisión. La introducción de la película, una secuencia de imágenes vistas desde arriba, nos transmiten con gran fuerza visual y sin necesidad de palabras el drama central de la vida de Elisabeth. No sólo ha pasado su momento de mayor fama sino que está envejeciendo y aunque cumplir cincuenta años no significa el final de una vida, en el mundo del espectáculo puede ser una condena. Y para ella lo es. El productor de su programa quiere renovar la imagen del show y de la cadena, así que despide a Elisabeth y comienza a buscar a alguien que sea al menos veinte años menor, lo que lleva a la actriz a sumirse en la tristeza y la frustración, ¿qué hacer ahora? Cuando se acaba lo que habías estado haciendo durante tantos, lo único que sabes hacer ¿cómo seguir adelante? Su vida solitaria se siente más vacía ahora y aunque tiene todo el tiempo del mundo para hacer otras cosas, no logra sacudirse la derrota de haber sido descartada. Es entonces cuando aparece una alternativa. Alguien le entrega un dato y un número de teléfono y de esa forma, Elisabeth entra en contacto con una organización (¿una empresa? ¿un hombre?) que ha desarrollado una misteriosa droga que le ofrece exactamente lo que ella desea más que nada en el mundo: una versión más joven y más hermosa de sí misma. O al menos eso es lo que ella piensa cuando encarga el producto y lo prueba con consecuencias tan inesperadas como irreversibles.
Out of respect for those who haven't seen the film, as it hasn't been released in all countries yet, I'll keep spoilers to a minimum and focus on talking about the themes that arise from the plot and that are as interesting as the script, brave, wild, risky and in some ways quite original, which took home the award at Cannes.

Without going into details, and as you may have deduced from the trailer (if you have seen it) or from the posters, the new version of Elisabeth, called Sue, is played by Margaret Qualley, an actress who could very well represent the epitome of beauty and youth. Sue is not only younger than Elisabeth, she is also stronger, more beautiful, happier, more charming. Her attractiveness borders on perfection. Many scenes in the film - but many, many - focus on the bodies of the protagonists, especially Sue's and certain specific points of her anatomy. I know that some viewers may find the excessive use of this resource repulsive, but The Substance belongs to the genre of body horror and it's important for the plot that one is aware of what the freshness of a young, athletic and attractive body represents not only in the middle of the film's plot but also in a world (showbiz) that lives mainly by and for appearances (and well, if you have to see a thousand scenes of Margaret Qualley in tights, tight clothes, dancing, I know there will be those who will not complain about that). Sue's image is, at all times, magnetic, it bursts in like a whirlwind under whose effect everything bends. That is why the substance referred to in the title of the film and which is the drug that makes Sue's existence possible, is not the ultimate drug I refer to in the title of this post. The real drug is youth. No one who is no longer young would turn down the chance to be young again, to experience again the intensity, fullness, and recklessness of being young; and if they were to be there again, who would want to leave it again if they could help it?
Sin entrar en detalles, y como lo habrán podido deducir del trailer (si lo han visto) o de los posters, la nueva versión de Elisabeth, llamada Sue, es interpretada por Margaret Qualley, actriz que bien pudiera representar el epítome de la belleza y la juventud. Sue no es sólo más joven que Elisabeth, también es más fuerte, más bella, más alegre, más encantadora. Su atractivo roza la perfección. Muchas escenas de la película - pero muchas, muchas - se enfocan en el cuerpo de las protagonistas, especialmente en el de Sue y de ciertos puntos específicos de su anatomía. Sé que a algunos espectadores les puede parecer repulsivo el uso excesivo que se hace de este recurso, pero The Substance pertenece al género del body horror y es importante, para la trama, que uno sea consciente de lo que representa la lozanía de un cuerpo joven, atlético y atractivo no sólo en medio de la trama del film sino también en un mundo (el showbiz) que vive principalmente por y para las apariencias (y bueno, si hay que ver mil escenas de Margaret Qualley en mallas, ropa ajustada, bailando, sé que habrá quienes no se quejen de eso). La imagen de Sue es, en todo momento, magnética, irrumpe como un torbellino bajo cuyo efecto todo se doblega. Es por eso que la sustancia a la que hace referencia el título del film y que es la droga que hace posible la existencia de Sue, no es la droga máxima a la que me refiero en el título de esta publicación. La verdadera droga es la juventud. Nadie que ya no sea joven rechazaría la oportunidad de volver a serlo, experimentar otra vez la intensidad, plenitud y temeridad que implica ser joven; y en caso de volver a estar allí, ¿quién querría abandonarlo de nuevo si pudiera evitarlo?
The script for The Substance has echoes of Jane Eyre, of Bluebeard's mysterious room, of the duality of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, of the price of fame shown in Perfect Blue, but above all of the myth of eternal youth (perhaps humanity's greatest obsession along with immortality) and of a concerned version of Oscar Wilde's classic, The Picture of Dorian Gray, combining all this with a look that, while not exempt from some flaws and clichés of the genre, is quite original, renewed, daring, brave, almost reckless, and where there seem to have been no creative limits, which - in today's world - is a triumph.
El guión de The Substance tiene ecos de Jane Eyre, de la misteriosa habitación de Barba Azul, de la dualidad del Dr. Jekyll y Mr. Hyde, del precio de la fama que se muestra en Perfect Blue, pero sobre todo del mito de la eterna juventud (tal vez la mayor obsesión de la humanidad junto a la inmortalidad) y de una versión concernista del clásico de Oscar Wilde, El retrato de Dorian Gray, combinando todo esto con una mirada que, sin estar exenta de algunas fallas y clichés del género, resulta bastante original, renovada, atrevida, valiente, temeraria casi, y en donde no parecen haber existido límites creativos, lo que - en el mundo de hoy - es un triunfo.
The film starts out as a drama, mixes with science fiction, progresses as a creepy psychological thriller, evolves into a repulsive body horror story and then, stepping on the accelerator, launches into a gory, monstrous and bloody ending that I couldn't have anticipated. And we owe that to Coralie Fargeat, director, writer and producer of the film that took to the extreme some of the ideas that were hinted at in her wild 2017 debut, Revenge. The Substance is a film that oozes triumphs. The creative freedom that Fargeat had in telling this story is a triumph, as are the cinematography - colorful, aggressive, sometimes indecent - and the performances of the main characters. Turning Nicholas Parker (Hailie and Annie's likeable father in The Parent Trap, played by Dennis Quaid) into a repulsive and despicable character is a merit. Margaret Qualley's performance, perfect at all times, is wonderful and shows the acting quality of this beautiful actress who has been doing incredible things in recent years (Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness) and who I fell in love with since I saw her in Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood. But the best of all is Demi Moore, what a performance! Elisabeth's physical and psychological evolution, her wide emotional spectrum and that fall into the abyss, manage to impact and be memorable (as well as many of the scenes) thanks to Moore's interpretation that could well deserve nominations for important awards when the season starts. From there, from all that, I believe that The Substance is perhaps the best horror film of the year (without a doubt the most original) Has anyone seen it yet? I'll read you in the comments.
El film parte como un drama, se combina con ciencia ficción, avanza como un espeluznante thriller psicológico, evoluciona a una repulsiva historia de body horror y se lanza, pisando el acelerador a fondo, a terminar con un final gore, mosntruoso y sangriento que yo no hubiera podido anticipar. Y eso se lo debemos a Coralie Fargeat, directora, escritora y productora de la película que llevó al extremo algunas de las ideas que se asomaron en su salvaje debut de 2017, Revenge. The Substance es una película que rezuma triunfos. La libertad creativa que tuvo Fargeat para contar esta historia, es un triunfo, como también los son la fotografía, colorida, agresiva, a veces indecente, y las actuaciones de los personajes principales. Convertir a Nicholas Parker (el simpático padre de Hailie y Annie en The Parent Trap, interpretado por Dennis Quaid) en un personaje repulsivo y despreciable, es un mérito. Lo de Margaret Qualley, perfecta en todo momento, es maravilloso y da cuenta de la calidad actoral de esta hermosa actriz que ha estado haciendo cosas increíbles en los últimos años (Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness) y que me enamoró desde que la vi en Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood. Pero la mejor de todos es Demi Moore ¡qué actuación! La evolución física y psicológica de Elisabeth, su amplio espectro emocional y esa caída al abismo, logran impactar y ser memorables (al igual que muchas de las escenas) gracias a la interpretación de Moore que bien pudiera merecer nominaciones a premios importantes cuando empiece la temporada. De allí, de todo eso, que yo crea que The Substance es tal vez la mejor película de terror del año (sin duda la más original) ¿alguno ya la ha visto? Los leo en los cometntarios
