The list may vary depending on who you ask. Some will mention Notting Hill, Pretty Woman, or another film with Julia Roberts; others will talk about Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle or You've Got Mail; and still others, despite the time, will include When Harry Met Sally and Love Actually on their list of favorite romantic comedies of the nineties. But almost everyone, if they've seen it, includes this film I'm presenting today, which I hadn't seen myself.

Directed by Gil Junger, with a screenplay by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, and starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, 10 Things I Hate About You is the quintessential representation of 1990s high school romantic comedies. The sheer number of classic elements of this genre makes it a worthy representative of its era, and explains why many viewers, even from newer generations, consider it a favorite. The story begins with Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a new student at a Seattle high school, who instantly falls for the beautiful and popular Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik). His classmate Michael (David Krumholtz) warns him it's impossible, not only because he considers Bianca out of his league—she's more interested in guys like Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan) than Cameron—but also because her father won't let her go on dates, let alone have a boyfriend, until her older sister, Kat (Julia Stiles), has one. And the problem, for Bianca, Joey, and Cameron, is that Kat has a terrible temper, a feminist discourse that condemns female stereotypes, and rejects any guy who shows the slightest interest in her. That's when Michael and Cameron devise a plan: find someone willing to date Kat so that Bianca can also go out (with Cameron, obviously). But no one wants to take the risk, not for free, at least. And right there Patrick Verona appears on the scene, the Australian bad boy with a reputation as a criminal, played by Heath Ledger.

La cantidad de elementos clásicos de este tipo de historias que contiene este film la hacen una digna representante de su género, su época, y explica por qué muchos espectadores, incluso de nuevas generaciones, la incluyen entre sus favoritas. La historia comienza con Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) un alumno nuevo en una secundaria en Seattle que, desde el primer instante, queda enamorado de la hermosa y popular Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik), pero su compañero de clases Michael (David Krumholtz) le advierte que es imposible, no sólo porque considera que Bianca está fuera de su alcance ya que se interesa en chicos más como Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan) que como Cameron, sino porque su padre no la deja salir a citas y mucho menos tener novio hasta que su hermana mayor, Kat (Julia Stiles), tenga uno. Patrick is almost as standoffish as Kat, but he's also surrounded by all sorts of rumors (they say he was in prison and that he burned down a police station) and he has terrible behavior. In contrast, Kat, although somewhat rigid, is also responsible, a very good student, and athletic. She can be a bit of a handful with boys, but she's not antisocial like Patrick. So when he shows interest in her, Kat is confused, defensive, and surprised. Why is this bad boy approaching her in their senior year of high school? His motives, at first, aren't exactly noble.
Patrick es casi tan arisco como Kat, pero además corren a su alrededor los más diversos rumores (dicen que estuvo en prisión y que incendió una estación de policía) y tiene muy mal comportamiento. As is always the case in these kinds of stories, there are rivalries, jealousy, misunderstandings, secrets, and rumors that entangle the characters' destinies. Most of the clichés of teen rom-coms are present in 10 Things I Hate About You: the attraction of opposites, the crush on the high school princess, the socially awkward best friend, fake friendships, betrayal, the bet (disguised here as a payoff), and of course, the somewhat ridiculous romantic gestures that, by embarrassing the person performing them, elevate them in the eyes of the admirer. Although I hadn't seen this movie, I had seen the scene where Patrick conspires with the school band to sing the classic "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" to Kat, and it truly is one of the most charming moments in the film and one of the most memorable scenes in romantic comedies of the nineties, between a duo quite representative of the era: Julia Stiles, who would later make "Save the Last Dance" and "Mona Lisa Smile"; and Heath Ledger who went on from here to act in "The Patriot," "A Knight's Tale" and shortly after "Brokeback Mountain" and his unforgettable performance as the Joker in "Batman: The Dark Knight," a role that earned him the Oscar posthumously.
Como sucede siempre en este tipo de historias, hay rivalidades, celos, malentendidos, secretos y rumores que van enredando el destino de los personajes. La mayoría de los clichés de las romcoms adolescentes están presentes en 10 Things I Hate about You: la atracción de los polos opuestos, el crush en la princesa de la secundaria, el mejor amigo socialmente torpe, las falsas amistades, la traición, la apuesta (disfrazada aquí de pago) y por supuesto los gestos románticos algo ridículos que, al avergonzar a su ejecutante, lo elevan ante los ojos de quien lo admira. Si bien no había visto esta película, sí había visto la escena en la que Patrick se confabula con la banda del colegio para cantarle a Kat el clásico Can't Take My Eyes Off You y en verdad es uno de los momentos más encantadores de la película y una de las escenas más memorables de las comedias románticas de los años noventa, entre una dupla bastante representativa de la época: Julia Stiles, que luego haría Save the Last Dance y Mona Lisa Smile; y Heath Ledger que pasó de acá a actuar en The Patriot, A Knight's Tale y poco después Brokeback Mountain y su inolvidable actuación como Joker en Batman: The Dark Knight, papel que le valió el Oscar de manera póstuma.
And alongside them we find other very typical names of the nineties, such as Larisa Oleynik, Larry Miller, Andrew Keegan, David Krumholtz, Oscar winner Allison Janney, the young star Gabrielle Union who would later make Bring It On with Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku and of course Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who begins this story as just another simp, following in the footsteps of his character Tom in 500 Days of Summer, but who then manages to rebel a little and have the success that that other character didn't have.
Y junto a ellos encontramos a otros nombres muy propios de los noventa, como Larisa Oleynik, Larry Miller, Andrew Keegan, David Krumholtz, la ganadora del Oscar Allison Janney, la estrella juvenil Gabrielle Union que luego haría Bring It On con Kirsten Dunst y Eliza Dushku y por supuesto a Joseph Gordon-Levitt, que empieza esta historia como un migajero más, en la estela de su personaje Tom en 500 Days of Summer, pero que luego consigue rebelarse un poco y tener el éxito que ese otro personaje no tuvo.
Seen through the eyes of today's society, 10 Things I Hate about You has more than one scene or passage that could clearly be cut, but even though times have changed, I think the rebellious teenage spirit, hungry for life and experience, is timeless. The same can be said of young love, which today may not be expressed through gestures like Patrick's toward Kat (such as that serenade on the school field bleachers) or the sonnet she composes for him, but rather through Instagram stories, tattoos, and other things typical of the era. But the feeling still exists, and I think that's why, along with the charm of the two main characters, many people can still enjoy this film even though it was released almost 26 years ago. Among teen rom-coms, my favorite is probably Easy A with the hilarious Emma Stone and the wonderful Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson, but that's from well after the nineties. From that era, I can only think of two stories I haven't seen: Clueless with Alicia Silverstone (another face that represents the nineties) and She's All That with Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook. But I know there must be many more, and I'm interested in reading your recommendations to check them out. What other romantic stories from those years would you recommend I watch? Vista a través de los ojos de la sociedad actual, 10 Things I Hate about You tiene más de una escena o pasaje claramente cancelables, pero aunque los tiempos hayan cambiado, el espíritu adolescente, rebelde, hambriento de vida y de experiencia, creo que es algo atemporal. Lo mismo se puede decir del amor juvenil que hoy tal vez no se demuestra con los gestos que Patrick tiene con Kat (como esa serenata en las gradas del campo de la escuela) o con el soneto que ella compone para él, sino con historias en Instagram, tatuajes y otras cosas propias de la época, pero el sentimiento aún existe y creo que por eso y por el encanto de la dupla protagonista, muchas personas aun pueden disfrutar esta película a pesar de haberse estrenado hace casi 26 años. Dentro de las romcoms juveniles, mi favorita tal vez sea Easy A con una divertidísima Emma Stone y unos maravillosos Stanley Tucci y Patricia Clarkson, pero esa es bastante posterior a los noventa; de aquellos años sólo puedo pensar en dos historias que no he visto: Clueless con Alicia Silverstone (otro rostro que representa los años noventa) y She's All That con Freddie Prinze Jr. y Rachael Leigh Cook, pero sé que deben existir muchas más y me interesa leer sus recomendaciones para echarles un vistazo, ¿qué otra historia romántica de esos años me recomiendan ver? ¿cuál es su favorita? I've heard a lot of people say that this is a really good film. I have tried on several occasions to get through it but just can't. I think that it is too silly for my taste but seeing as how we don't really have a lot of Heath Ledger to choose from, that I should try to see if I can get through it again.
