MY SCREEN WRITING IDEA PROCESS.

Writing movies for TV might sound fun if you have ideas or a story you want to tell but the moment you get that pen to paper and after writing a few pages you go blank and that's it.

Other times ideas simply don't come out to start with in the first place. Everything seems cliche, no source to get the right inspiration from.

Sometimes you have an idea but don't know how to structure it.

On average it takes 1 to 6 months to write a script, could be more sometimes a year depending on the writer.

On all this, it no longer looks fun especially if you're writing on a scheduled time.
So what do you do to speed up the process or and keep that fountain of ideas flowing.

This is what I do.

Watch,enjoy and decipher movies.
You can't write movies if you don't watch and enjoy movies, (Enjoy) on emphasis. How would you know what to write? And how to? You have to fall in love with the art and see the infinite possibilities.

I feel In love with movies way before I fell in love with writing, I loved watching movies as a kid, It amazed me. I watched and enjoyed different genres. Action, horror, fantasies, Drama.
After falling in love with movies in time I started telling easily good well written movies from horrible ones.
When you watch movies and decipher, and ask some questions while watching, ideas starts springing in your head.
You start seeing scenes differently and start appreciating the art.
I once had a great Idea solely based on a movie I watched and enjoyed.

Allow yourself to be inspired by people or happenings around you.

I use this a lot, one of the first scripts I ever wrote was gotten from the inspiration of a colleague in my office.
She was a beautiful, hard working girl who had a terrible speech deficiency and it caused her problems. She was the brightest in the office despite her deficiency, but I couldn't help but to see more to it and immediately I saw a movie there.
So I researched on her speech deficiency and got the Information I needed. A huge idea sprung up. I inserted love, pain, pity, joy and a well structured story line and Boom! I had a plot and everything fell in place. This became one of the best scripts I've ever written.
You could get Inspired by a family member, a loved on, a story someone told you about, a neighbor at your place of work, That funny family, that wicked aunt, That sad story that friend told you, That close friend that got sick from a chronic illness, That maid treated wrongly etc. Anything around you can inspire you.

Researching.
This is key, No one knows it all, in everything you do you've got to learn, learning especially from other writers or directors, download pdf of movie scripts, see how it's done.
Listen or watch videos of your favorite directors or writers. At one point I was obsessed with Quentin Tarantino. I listened learnt about his style, his story etc.
Quintin once said "you don't have to go to film school to make a good movie" all you have to do is love what you do and you would want to research learn even if you don have the opportunity to go to a film school, and we live in a digital age where researching is easy, you could research through Google, YouTube etc.

Take strolls, listen to music and think.
Oh music and strolls how important these are. I use this technique a lot especially when I'm blank.
It's like taking a deep breather from the noise and entering a void of peace. Feeling the environment and thinking. Everything sometimes becomes slow and you can see properly.
When everywhere seems clogged and ideas don't seem to flow you need to get off your seat or bed, go outside listen to slow good music or any of your choice, taking a walk thinking and enjoy the fresh air and the rivers would flow.
It's like an idea exercise,it pumps the brain.

Knowing you particular Genre.
Genres are categories of different kinds of film. For example:
Horror
Thriller
Comedy
Romantic comedy
Drama
Action/Adventure
Sci-fi
Fantasy
Different screen writers have their own genre. Not that you cannot have different(more than one) genres. You can but there is normally one particular genre in which you know deep down you love and you yarn to explore.
That genre that brings out the creativity in you, that is what you should focus on. Having a known genre, that is knowing what you like to write about keeps your thinking focused
Sometimes Its good to know what kind of writer you are so you won't be confused and wanting to write everything. But if you're multi-genrred that's beautiful also.

Even if you have just a spark of an idea just keep writing everything usually forms along the way, stories start to add up when you start. Don't just wait fit the whole idea to be complete before you start writing, you might end up waiting a long time.
There are other screen writing idea process, but he these are some of mine.

Different writers have their different process patterns. But i hope these might be able to Help.
