¡Hola, gente de internet! Hoy hablaremos sobre una de mis películas preferidas, y se trata como pueden leer en el título, de Insidious o como se conoce comúnmente en español, La noche del demonio (Ni me pregunten porqué ese título de cuarta).
Hello, people of the internet! Today we will talk about one of my favorite movies, and it's, as you can read in the title, Insidious.
Empezaré diciendo que la película está inspirada en la película Poltergeist, y de allí sus semejanzas, sin embargo, Insidious hace alarde de toda su magnificencia resaltando muchos pequeños detalles que a la larga, terminan siendo importantes y determinantes.
I'll start by saying that the film is inspired by the movie Poltergeist, and hence its similarities, however, Insidious flaunts all its magnificence highlighting many small details that in the long run, end up being important and decisive.
Hablaré más que todo de aspectos técnicos que componen la película. Sí, hablaremos de actuaciones, historia y esos otros aspectos, pero no tan hondamente como he hecho en otras reviews. Sin más dilación… ¡Comencemos!
I'll talk mostly about the technical aspects that make up the film. Yes, we will talk about performances, story and those other aspects, but not as deeply as I have done in other reviews. Without further ado... Let's get started!
La película está escrita por Leigh Whannell, la música fue compuesta por Joseph Bishara, la fotografía estuvo a cargo de David M. Brewer y John R. Leonetti, y finalmente dirigida por la leyenda, el grande, el mejor, el dios de las películas de terror, el fantástico James Wan (soy su fan y en definitiva cuando Dios lo hizo, rompió el molde. En fin, continuemos con la Review)
The film is written by Leigh Whannell, the music was composed by Joseph Bishara, the cinematography was handled by David M. Brewer and John R. Leonetti, and finally directed by the legend, the great, the best, the god of horror movies, the fantastic James Wan (I'm his fan and think that when God made him, he broke the mold. Anyway, let's continue with the Review).
La historia me parece bastante interesante, ya que aborda el tema de «El desdoblamiento» o «La transmutación» que es la habilidad de transportar el alma fuera del cuerpo con objetivos varios y con el resultado del estado vegetativo del cuerpo, ya que éste no ha sufrido ningún daño para degenerarse pero la conciencia y alma no están dentro de él. Es lo que inconscientemente hace Dalton (uno de los protagonistas) y cuya habilidad fue heredada de su padre.
The story seems to me quite interesting, the story touches on the topic of "The splitting" or "Transmutation" which is the ability to transport the soul out of the body for various purposes and with the result of the vegetative state of the body as it has not suffered any damage to degenerate, but the consciousness and soul are not inside it. This is what Dalton (one of the main characters) does unconsciously and whose ability was inherited from his father.
En cuanto a las actuaciones, la verdad son bastante buenas, aunque tampoco en extremo. Sin embargo los actores de los que casi nadie habla, los fantasmas y demonios… esos sí que hicieron un excelente trabajo.
As for the performances, the truth is that they are quite good, although not in the extreme. However, the actors that almost nobody talks about, the ghosts and demons... they did an excellent job.
Ahora hablemos de la ambientación y fotografía. No puedo mencionar esos aspectos sin hablar de James Wan, este joven director tiene su propio estilo heredado de sus orígenes asiáticos, y es que se inspira en leyendas locales de su país de origen (Malasia) y también de otro país asiático y rey en temas paranormales como lo es Japón. Son estos aspectos los que llevaron a Wan a dirigir y especificar a los directores de fotografía a como debía ser la ambientación, planos, iluminación, sombras, paleta de colores y demás, trabajo que ambos directores (de fotografía) tuvieron que hacer con mucho detalle para finalmente complacer a James.
Now let's talk about the setting and photography. I can not mention these aspects without talking about James Wan, this young director has his own style inherited from his Asian origins, and is inspired by local legends of his country of origin (Malaysia) and also from another Asian country and king in paranormal themes such as Japan. It's these aspects that led Wan to direct and specify to the directors of photography how the setting, shots, lighting, shadows, color palette and so on should be, a job that both directors (of photography) had to do in great detail to finally please James.
El estilo de James se trata de alargar los planos (en general cerrados) y hace uso de una buena banda sonora de fondo, además juega con la ambigüedad, a veces al final de la toma, no sucede nada transcendental, en otras ocasiones sí que sucede (la aparición de un fantasma, por ejemplo) y en otras parece que no sucede nada, pero al segundo siguiente nos da un susto de muerte porque logró relajarnos y no nos esperábamos el susto. Sin dudas el tener este método le ayuda a ser impredecible y lograr generar un buen susto.
James' style is about stretching the shots (generally closed) and makes use of a good background soundtrack and plays with ambiguity, sometimes at the end of the scene, nothing transcendental happens, sometimes it does happen (the appearance of a ghost, for example) and sometimes it seems that nothing happens but the next second it scares us to death because he managed to relax us and we didn't expect the scare. Undoubtedly, having this method helps you to be unpredictable and to generate a good scare.
La otra cosa que hace James, es colocar pistas o easter eggs en las tomas, al punto de que muchas veces te hace querer regresar la película porque creíste ver algo, descubriendo así que en efecto no estabas equivocado, lo que aumenta el terror porque, generalmente los personajes en la película no advierten estas cosas.
The other thing James does, is to place clues or easter eggs in the shots, to the point that many times it makes you want to go back to the movie because you thought you saw something, thus discovering that you were indeed not wrong, which increases the terror because, usually the characters in the movie don't notice these things.
El empleo de luces y sombras en la película son excelsos. En lo que yo llamo «el otro lado» hay muchas sombras y la luz proviene de la lámpara que sostiene Josh, aun así, los planos no se ven ni muy oscuros, ni quemados (exceso de luz que desdibuja los contornos bien sea en fotos o material audiovisual). Es bastante peligroso emplear un espacio todo negro ya que se corre el riesgo de que no se entiendan bien las escenas, pero esto James lo solucionó muy bien con ese equilibrio entre las luces y sombras.
The use of lights and shadows in the film are excellent. In what I call "the other side" there are many shadows and the light comes from the lamp that Josh holds, even so, the shots are neither too dark nor burned (excess of light that blurs the contours either in photos or audiovisual material). It's quite dangerous to use an all black space as there is a risk of not understanding the scenes well but James solved this very well with that balance between light and shadow.
La forma en la que se mueve la cámara y los planos en ese otro lado son magníficas ya que dan la sensación de que claramente Josh no pertenece allí. Esas escenas pertenecen al climax de la película y son las que a mi parecer son las mejores y más cuidadas.
The way the camera moves and the shots on that other side are superb as they give the feeling that Josh clearly doesn't belong there. Those scenes belong to the climax of the film and are the ones that in my opinion are the best and most carefully crafted.
En la película también hay efectos de sonidos constantes (en el otro lado) que ponen al espectador a la defensiva y en constante vigilancia, como por ejemplo cuando Josh entra en la antigua casa y es abordado por muchos sonidos a la vez: un llanto en el piso superior, una risa de niño en el pasillo junto a sus pisadas (también se ve al niño correr) y el silbido en el piso de abajo, antesala de una de mis escenas preferidas y la cual les dejare a continuación:
In the film there are also constant sound effects (on the other side) that make the spectator defensive and in constant vigilance, such as when Josh enters the old house and is accosted by many sounds at once: a cry upstairs, a child's laughter in the hallway next to his footsteps (the child is also seen running) and the whistling downstairs, a prelude to one of my favorite scenes and which I will leave you with below:
El desenlace que tiene la película es agridulce, sin embargo, al ser abierto, ya dejaba la posibilidad de una secuela, dejándonos con ganas de ver más y de que finalmente hubiese una explicación para el pequeño misterio que nos dejaba la película y del que intuíamos, no iba todo bien.
The denouement of the film is bittersweet, however, being open, it already left the possibility of a sequel, leaving us wanting to see more and that there was finally an explanation for the little mystery that the film left us and that we sensed was not going well.
Recuerdo ver esta película en el cine y siendo en extremo asidua a las películas de terror, no esperaba sorprenderme demasiado con ella, pero la realidad fue otra y terminé literalmente aterrada de levantarme de la cama cuando iba a dormir. Creo que desde El Exorcista, no había habido una película que me asustara tanto, y es por eso que me volví fan de James Wan, porque fue quién me hizo volver a sentir ese torrente de adrenalina al ver un film de terror.
I remember seeing this movie at the cinema and being extremely assiduous to horror movies, I didn't expect to be too surprised with it, but the reality was different and I ended up literally terrified to get out of bed when I went to sleep. I think that since The Exorcist, there had not been a movie that scared me so much and that's why I became a fan of James Wan, because he was the one who made me feel again that adrenaline rush when watching a horror film.
Esta joya audiovisual tuvo un pequeño presupuesto de 1.5 millones de dólares con el cuál, James y su equipo se las tuvo que arreglar para realizar la cinta. Recurrió al maquillaje para todos sus fantasmas y su demonio, y así dejar el mayor presupuesto para los pocos efectos especiales (uno de los aspectos más caros) que pudieron permitirse. Aún con todas las limitaciones monetarias que tuvieron, la película recaudó 97 millones de dólares, siendo una de las películas de terror más taquilleras y en efecto, asegurando su secuela.
This audiovisual gem had a small budget of 1.5 million dollars with which James and his team had to manage to make the film. He resorted to makeup for all his ghosts and his demon to leave the biggest budget for the few special effects (one of the most expensive aspects) that they could afford. Even with all the monetary limitations they had, the film grossed $97 million, making it one of the highest grossing horror films and in effect, securing its sequel.

La saga de Insidious es buena tiene un terror particular que logra poner en muchos espectadores tensión y temor y eso es brutal. No soy muy fanático del género por lo cual mi conocimiento y experiencia son vagas, pero vaya que buen desarrollo de películas y escenas tan perturbadoras que dan mucho pero mucho miedo.

Yo soy aficionada en cuanto a cinematografía pero si tengo varios libros sobre el tema y me los he leído todos, es por eso que intento hacer los análisis de una forma más detallista. Gracias por comentar. Sí, yo antes de Insidious no había visto nunca que abordaran ese tema en una peli de terror y honestamente lo hicieron de una forma excelsa.
