“It's so beautiful, it's not made for the human eye” were the words that stuck in my mind after watching La Chimera, an Italian film that feels like having found a jewel lost in time, released last year but sheltered for at least thirty years as one of the treasures of cinema that you get every so often. A film that, seriously, feels like no other contemporary film, that feels like it's not from this era, but, moreover, feels like something fresh among all the great productions coming out today.

With noise and a texture that, seriously, can only be created if recorded with analog, La Chimera tells the story of Arthur, a tomb raider who after a few years away from Italy (where he plundered the tombs) for his crimes, returns and together with his old group returns to loot tombs, with the help of an “intuition” that serves only to get buried treasures.

As usual, I had already read about the film and had only seen good things, texts that placed it as the best film of the year, as a gem and as a unique and charming film, and the truth is, none of those texts lie. I was expecting, for some reason, a Call Me By Your Name style film, with incredible landscapes and a very measured aesthetic, and well, it is partly that, but with a whole different vibe. Like a lot of Italian or French cinema, it's a contemplative film, where the story doesn't have much to say, but has a lot to show, to make you feel.

If it's not based on a novel, The Chimera does a spectacular job of feeling like one. Starting one way, then going the other, showing situations that add nothing, opening up ideas that never close, and touching on themes that are never resolved, it sounds like something that in any other film would be a problem, but here it feels so natural, part of the film, it feels like you're part of Arthur's group, like you're part of his family, part of the whole magic that embraces the film from the first minute, with that texture, those characters, that happiness and that story that's as quirky as it is natural.

Magic realism is called, and has been part of our culture for a long time. And it's just how some “magical realism” is supposed to be, since the color palette along with the photography is so realistic that it looks fake, it looks like magic. A film that besides feeling like it speaks to your heart, to your soul, it also does it with such sweetness that it is impossible not to end up happy when watching the credits of the film, realizing that, along with Arthur and his companions, you too had a little trip that led you to nothing more than to enjoy and contemplate, but also felt like a hug and like a bucket of cold water at the same time.

“Es tan hermosa, no está hecha para el ojo humano” fueron las palabras que se quedaron en mi mente tras ver La Chimera, una película italiana que se siente como haber encontrado una joya perdida en el tiempo, que se estrenó el año pasado pero que estuvo resguardada por al menos unos treinta años como uno de los tesoros del cine que se consiguen cada cierto tiempo. Una película, que, en serio, se siente cómo ninguna otra película contemporánea, que se siente como si no fuera de esta época, pero, además, se siente como una algo fresco entre todas las grandes producciones que salen hoy en día.

Con ruido y una textura que, en serio, solo se puede crear si se graba con analógico, La Chimera nos cuenta la historia de Arthur, un saqueador de tumbas que tras unos años lejos de Italia (dónde saqueaba las tumbas) por sus crímenes, regresa y junto a su antiguo grupo vuelve a saquear tumbas, con la ayuda de una “intuición” que le sirve solo para conseguir tesoros enterrados.

Como es normal, ya había leído sobre la película y solo había visto cosas buenas, textos que la colocaban como la mejor película del año, como una joya y como una película única y encantadora, y la verdad, ninguno de esos textos miente. Esperaba, por alguna razón, una película al mayor estilo Call Me By Your Name, con paisajes increíbles y una estética muy medida, y bueno, en parte si es eso, pero con toda una vibra distinta. Como mucho del cine italiano o francés, es una película contemplativa, dónde la historia no tiene mucho que decir, sino que tiene mucho que mostrar, que hacerte sentir.

Si no está basada en alguna novela, La Chimera hace un trabajo espectacular en sentirse como una. Empezando por un lado, después yéndose para otro, mostrando situaciones que no aportan nada, abriendo ideas que nunca cierran, y tocando temas que no se resuelven, suena a algo que en cualquier otra película sería un problema, pero aquí se siente tan natural, parte de la película, se siente como si fueras parte del grupo de Arthur, como si fueras parte de su familia, parte de toda la magia que acoge la película desde el primer minuto, con esa textura, esos personajes, esa felicidad y esa historia tan extravagante como natural.

Realismo mágico se llama, y ha sido parte de nuestra cultura desde hace mucho tiempo. Y es justo como se supone que debería algo de “realismo mágico”, ya que la paleta de colores junto con la fotografía es tan realista que parece de mentira, parece magia. Una película que además de sentir que te habla al corazón, al alma, también lo hace con tanta dulzura que es imposible no terminar feliz al ver los créditos de la película, al darte cuenta que, junto con Arthur y sus compañeros, tú también tuviste un pequeño viaje que no te llevo a nada más que a disfrutar y contemplar, sino que además se sintió como un abrazo y como un balde de agua fría a la vez.
