Before going on to answer this question, let us understand some basic things about ourselves.

Where do you feel yourself?

A famous Philosopher (Alan Watts) said, Most people feel ‘i, myself’, as a center of sensitivity locked up somewhere inside their skin, and majority of people feel themselves to be inside their heads, some in their solar plexus, etc (this location of myself have differed in many culture).
Most civilized people feel themselves somewhere behind the eyes, and between the ears, always trying to attend to signals received from the outside world, like a hacker in NASA control room with computer screens in front of him attending to different signals and watches out for troubles in the environment. And also, always in the process of decision making (the thought process).

You see, this is where the feeling of isolation is born. Because, your identification of yourself is wrong. You also feel you are dragging your body around, attending to various stimuli. Furthermore, as a result of this feeling, you believe yourself to be split, ‘the Higher self and the lower self’. You also feel you are in control of certain actions that occurs like walking, speaking, thinking, etc, that’s why we often say, i think, i walk, i speak etc. While other actions like breathing, the beating of your heart, digestion of your food, circulation of your blood, etc, those are beyond your control, they are happening to you. This feeling of separation is therefore, multiplied into different aspect of our lives. Thus, the feeling of wanting to feel among, the feeling and fear of loneliness (isolation), etc.
