I'm not a robot

You must always be able to predict what's next and then have the flexibility to evolve.

- Marc Benioff -

I'll be honest and say I'm not sure I one hundred percent agree with that quote above; it's the must always be able to predict part I'm not totally sold on. I mean, I agree in principle, however it's not always possible to predict what may come next.

I had a great work day today. It was my first back at the office after recovering from the flu and I managed to spend most of it out on the road meeting with clients and potential clients.

It was super-productive and, on the way home I was thinking about the meetings, my performance, how I represented the company, presented to the potential clients, dealt with objections and I thought about what I did well or could have done better. Those things, and more, are typical considerations at the end of my work day as they help me plan for the future. So, what did I learn?

Learned nothing

I didn't really learn anything, but that doesn't mean there wasn't value to be gained from the evaluation. You see, sometimes evaluating oneself and finding nothing but the confirmation that a good performance was delivered is exactly what a person needs. It builds confidence and momentum which can lead to greater results.

Back to the quote

Having flexibility to adapt to changing situations is important in the role I have now and has been critical in the past roles over my working life. I think that goes without saying though really; flexibility is one of the most important personality traits one can have. Being able to predict what comes next though? OK, it was only a couple paragraphs ago I was saying I wasn't sure about it but - here's the thing folks - I can't always predict what may come next when I'm working with clients but having an understanding of what might possibly come next is well within my ability. Let me explain.

I'm not a robot

Through training, research, study and experience it's been possible for me to have a clear understanding of the possible scenarios that may present themselves. Sure, it's impossible to know, but humans can be quite predictable and so, with enough thought and effort, it's feasible that one can learn most of what may come. Spend some more time and effort learning how to circumvent, adapt to, mitigate, solve or be flexible with those things and one is on the way towards getting the job done.

I don't approach my job like a robot programmed to do a thing no matter what; I've never approached any of my jobs like that. It pays to be focused yes, but inflexible to change? Unable to pivot? No, that's never worked for me. People do it though, mostly I guess out of ignorance or laziness I suppose. Putting in effort to learn and understand what might possibly come next can seem difficult; do it though, and one will probably find much greater success, or so I've found.

I had a great day today. I put myself in a position to have the opportunity to make a massive gain and I'm going to put it down to not being a robot...and thirty two years of training, research, study and experience.

I'm not sure if I'd like the ability to always predict what might come next as it would remove a lot of life's surprises which, whilst sometimes bad, can be most welcome also. There's times I wish I could though. How about you? Would you like the super-power of being able to predict the future? If so why and if not why not?

I'm glad your first day went well.

We can predict all we want and then whatever happens will happen anyway. I don't know about all this super power stuff. Would we get bored if nothing unpredictable ever happened? I dunno.

I'd prefer to have a little mystery in life, that something is left to chance in my decision-making, rather than it be predictable. Of course, there's something I'd prefer to know I guess.

Yep, it was a good day, no deal is done, but the opportunity is there and that gives rise to hope ownership and responsibility of my role and my actions to give me the best chance to move it forward. If I was to pick up this deal, well, I'd be a long way towards my annual budget, in only my first three weeks. 😊

Well ! I hope it comes through. That would be a very impressive start.

It would be nice, and will go a long way towards a great first annual period; there's more work to be done yet though. Time will reveal all. 😊

I already have the ability to predict the future. Where I often fall short is the ability to predict it correctly.

So I just muddle along by being as prepared as I can be (or want to be in some cases) and be entirely certain that what I predicted is very likely wrong. It more or less works for me...

Muddling along is what we all do I think, even though some people think they have it all worked out. No matter what a person hopes, thinks, wants, or wishes for life will generally have different ideas. So, muddle along, aim things in the right general direction and thinks will sometimes work out.

I'm glad you had a good day! I am sure it feels good to be back! :)

Would I like to be able to predict? While it would be nice some days, I actually am okay with letting fate take its course. Most days. :)

You are a robot? Noooo! (and now I have a song in my head about robots) Hi, Galen~!

If I was a robot I'd be a cool one, like the one off Lost in Space although I'm afraid I'm a real boy and subject to the falibilities than come with that.

WARNING Will Robinson! It was pretty cool. I wanted one of those.

Serendipity. I live for it.

As we human beings have feelings and desires so we predict that our wishes should be fulfulfilled. But if not, our hearts break. l think we should not expect anything in our lives because life is unpredictable.
If we have a superpower of the right prediction about the future we are surely not human beings.

I disagree, with your not expecting anything comment.

I always expect that I work hard to be the best version of myself, that I approach life with passion and design and create it as best I can. Those expectations, and the resulting actions help me live a better life. To have no expectations is to be aimless. Just my opinion.

This is such good news, knew you'd survive the flu. You are a born fighter. Our prediction can't possibly be right at all times. Though humans can be predictable at times doesn't mean it'll work out every time. After all, we are all humans.

I'll die eventually, just not from the flu.

We will all die eventually.

Change is a constant thing in life. The ability of we humans to adapt to a dynamic situation and forsee what's before us most tome gives us an edge.

Thanks for sharing

Cheers 🍻

The ability of we humans to adapt to a dynamic situation and foresee what's before us most time gives us an edge.

Yes, I remember saying this at some point.

I actually think it's quite scary to have this ability.. Hmm... And that means there are no more surprises for my entire life. So maybe nope for me haha!

Yeah, I guess people would rather avoid bad surprises but have the good ones. We cant have it both ways though.
