Setting systems rather than goals

Setting goals is a common practice when it comes to personal and professional development. We often hear the phrase "aim for the stars" and are encouraged to set high targets for ourselves in order to achieve success. However, while setting goals can be a useful tool, it's important to remember that it's not the only way to make progress and achieve our objectives.

In fact, there is a different approach that can be even more effective when it comes to productivity: setting a system.

What is a system?

A system is a set of processes or procedures that are put in place to achieve a specific outcome. It's a way of organizing and structuring our actions in order to accomplish what we want.

For example, if your goal is to lose weight, a system might be to exercise for a certain number of minutes each day, track your calorie intake, and drink a certain amount of water. If your goal is to save money, a system could be to create a budget, save a certain percentage of your income, and avoid unnecessary expenses.

The benefits of setting a system

  • A system helps you focus on the journey: When we set a goal, we often focus on the end result and forget about the process. This can lead to frustration and burnout. With a system, you can focus on the journey and the small victories along the way, which can be more motivating and rewarding.

  • A system promotes sustainability: When we reach a goal, it's easy to fall back into old habits and lose the progress we've made. A system helps to ensure that the changes we make are sustainable and long-lasting.

How to set a system

So, how do one set a system? Here are some steps:

  • Identify your objective: What is it that you want to achieve? Be specific and make sure it's something that is meaningful and important to you.

  • Break it down into smaller steps: Think about the actions you need to take in order to achieve your objective. These should be small, manageable steps that you can work on consistently.

  • Create a schedule: Decide on a schedule for your system and make sure to stick to it. Consistency is the main key when you start building habits.

  • Monitor your progress: Keep track of your progress and make adjustments as needed. Don't be afraid to change things up if something isn't working.

  • Celebrate your successes: It's important to celebrate your small victories along the way. This will help to keep you motivated and on track.

Setting a system instead of a goal can be a powerful tool for productivity. It allows for ongoing progress,helps you build habits, allows for flexibility, helps you focus on the journey, and promotes sustainability. By following the steps outlined above, you can create a system that will help you achieve your objectives and make meaningful progress in your personal and professional life.

Remember, a system is a continuous process, so don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results. Keep working at it and focus on the small victories along the way. With time and consistent effort, you'll be well on your way to achieving your goals and creating a more productive and fulfilling life.
