This is one of the largest arboreal edible mushrooms - Pheasant's back mushroom

in Fungi Loverslast year

Few people know this mushroom, and the fact that it is an edible arboreal mushroom is very little. An adult specimen can surprise you with its size, because it can be up to a meter in diameter.

Unfortunately, such a specimen is no longer used in the kitchen, They are tough. But the snails still want them.

The mushroom is edible when it is still quite young. It reaches several centimeters in diameter. Its flesh is then very flexible, pliable. It has a beautiful mushroom smell and taste. It works great when preparing tripe in a vegetarian form, because it perfectly imitates meat in the dish.

The cap of the mushroom is usually yellow or cream in color. Young fruiting bodies are cup-shaped, with age they become fan-shaped, flat.

The top of the cap is quite slippery and sticky, making it a great feeding place for snails. It is covered with characteristic brown scales.

The stem, as in most arboreal mushrooms, is attached laterally. In young mushrooms it is quite long, but it quickly turns into a cap and in older fruiting bodies it is almost imperceptible.

The flesh of this mushroom is a delicacy in the kitchen. It is meaty, juicy, very tasty. It is difficult to compare it with another mushroom - maybe oyster mushrooms are similar in taste and consistency. It is quite brittle and breakable. It has a very strong mushroom smell and taste.

Where to look for it? Contrary to appearances, it is quite common. It lives on living and dead deciduous trees. Often in parks, gardens, on roadside trees, along alleys.

It appears in spring, often in May and can be observed even until late autumn.

I just found out that arboreal mushrooms are edible. In our village many mushrooms grow like that, but unfortunately we didn't realize that this type of mushroom can be cooked into delicious dishes. Thank you for this valuable information sir. Regards.

Yes, many edible species of mushrooms grow on trees. Even in winter 😉

In our village, there are still many people who do not like to eat mushrooms. Maybe they are afraid to choose the wrong mushroom. Because there are also mushrooms that are poisonous.
