The Emphasis on the family as it concerns literacy development is not an accidental one the changing society has influenced the present generation of children in many ways.
The society with it's rapid changes makes a broader range of background and experience among children. Parents are therefore urged to view themselves as being in partnership with the school which is then a formalised extension of the family. The involvement of parents in the success of their children is a generally recognised factor.the primary motivation for involving parents in literacy development is that the involvement seeems to benefit both the parents and child.

A child does not become literate on his own rather he or she receives help from the closest adult who is capable of offering one. for this reason, the first teacher a child has is the parents and his first school is the home..therefore,Parents must bestow love for learning in the child and guide him to persevere on his own. To want to learn is more important than to teach.

Research also shows that the earlier parents become involved in their children reading, the more profound the result and the longer the effect will last. When parents are involved, they encourage and motivate their child to work harder by so doing, the child tends to work harder and achieve academic excellence...

Now a question comes, what then should you do with a child who finds it difficult to learn or even read like other children? To answer this, once a child does not have the zeal to learn ,teaching him is like one forcing a horse to stream, getting the horse to drink water will be virtually impossible. When a child has the zeal to learn first,Every other thing, becomes secondary. And that zeal must be initiated by the parents .Hence the popular saying teachers are the second parents .

To me,teaching is not just a profession,it is also a vocation.it takes a lot for one to be a teacher .as a teacher, you should be able to act as a friend and a times as an enemy just to get the best out of a child.

Children need to become proficient readers because this is where their educational success starts for one to understand a piece of writing vividly,he must first of all,be able to read the piece fluently .and for a child to achieve this, parental assistance,is of utmost necessity,Parents are the closest agents and mentors to the children and therefore in the best position to hone the reading skills of their children.and through continuous practice, the art of reading becomes a habit in the child...

In summary,

For,any child to become a fluent reader,Parentshave to play their roles. Providing enough reading material for the child, devoting some time for reading stories with the child, inculcating library habit in the child and lastly being the child's role model...

Though, not every parent is literate, but in all,you must teach what you know and provide the rest for your child .....thanks for reading through

Best regards
