PARENTING AND FOOD SECURITY

  • Introduction

Today I went for a seminar which was organized by women to teach their fellow women some things that are going on around them. We had three seasoned teachers who taught on different things and they all did justice to what was assigned to them. For this blog, I will be sharing just the lessons I learned from the first teacher and I'm going to share the other lessons in different individual blog because they all spoke from different areas . The first lesson was based on our diets, how women no longer care about what they feed their household with mostly because of their busy lives nowadays.

In the course of the lesson, we were able to learn that the security we place on food has now reduced and we no longer care too much of what we give to our children to eat especially this part of the world, Nigeria. Here in Nigeria, parents are very quick to buy biscuits, sweets and drinks for their children once they start crying or disturbing them just to escape their troubles and due to this, they don't even give time to checking the contents of what they give to their children to consume as long as the children are okay with it.

Now parents don't get to train their children anymore as they should, instead it seems like the children are now the ones to tell the parents how they want to be trained and that is because right from the start, most parents neglect the little things concerning their family especially the children because they are very busy looking for the daily bread for their family. Buying these things for our children is never the problem, but then our apathy towards knowing what these things contain is becoming really alarming.

Most parents like getting so many food stuffs stocked in the house because they are capable of doing so and because of this, most mothers find it hard to prepare good food for the family, instead they result to fast-food almost everyday, just to save themselves from stress of a busy day. It is not really easy as a woman working and still getting home to do all the work of a care giver at home, it takes only a virtuous woman to do that and it's obvious we have just few virtuous woman around.


  • Benefits of being food conscious

In every processed food we buy for the home or for our children, we should always be conscious of the ingredients and recommendations written on them so we won't give our children food that are not safe for them. You must cultivate the habit of reading the labels, directions and ingredients and others before giving it to our families to consume. We should start taking our food security seriously as it will help us in so many ways;

Some of the children around us today are very young but when you see them you will easily mistake them to be adults because of their physical appearance. The reason is mostly because of the kind of food they are exposed to right from an early age. Of course there are some other reasons but then, this is one of the major reasons.



Giving our family the right diet at the right time will help them to grow very healthy and you will realize they hardly ever fall sick because the food they eat helps them build a very active immune system and this helps to fight all the diseases trying to get inside the body.



As a mother, when you have known how the diet of the family should be like, it will help you reduce the cost of living because you no longer have to spend money on some unnecessary things because now you have a pattern you follow in feeding your family which is healthy and safer.

There are many other things I got to learn from the seminar but then I have summarized them here on this post and I hope it reaches you in good spirit and I hope you give it a second thought and try your best as a parent especially mothers to be more careful and watchful of the food we give to our families especially our children.

Food is something most families overlook, but shouldn't be overlooked at all.

Sometimes it may be as a because of lack of funds to eat good food. In this case, I can understand as most families find it really difficult to survive in this harsh economy. But the one that is disheartening is the one that families that are well-to-do do this because they feel they have excess money so their children can live their lives feeding on junks instead of good meal.

It is important that parents and children make conscious effort to take good care of their health, as it has future impact on their lives.

Hmm, you have spoken really well, of course the major focus are on people who are privileged to purchase good food items but then choose to give their family all the waste and call them food and that is why most of them still end up spending those money in the hospital.

It is not going to be an easy one at all but then a little improvement every day will go a long way.

Yes partner, the seminar was a really great one and I was so happy I was part of it. The had other lessons that was taught and I'm going to be sharing them as time goes on.

Of course I do know you are a great chef and you love cooking your own food every time and that's just the best. So sadly that some women don't even know how to cook and they are not even ready to learn how to.

My dear you are super right oo. Indeed you learnt the most sensitive thing in that seminar. Most of we parents are always claiming busy forgeting our basic responsibilities as a mother. I understand that we need to hustle to make ends meet but healthy living should be given a priority as well.

My children always crave to carry noodles to school as lunch but it's a big no in my house. Natural food everyday oo 😂😂 unless it's a day my gas finished unannounced. I wake up 5am everyday to make fresh food for them irrespective of how uncomfortable it might be...but I take it as my responsibility instead of eating junks all the time. Of course they see their mate eating noodles in school and they want to, but I don't want that always.

Being conscious to the food we take is not being choosy, it's being wise talaga since health is wealth. Some ingredients are not healthy so we must check them thoroughly and i think thatvis important rin. Kudos for that kind of seminars. More to come and attend to. 😊

Very informative article! You are totally right, food and knowledge from where it originates and the whole journey reaching to the plate is very important. It's nice to take time for cooking and also eating. One thing you can try is eating with hands, like in many Asian countries. It gives a different, better taste to the food.
As well, we cook many times in claypot on fire as it's know that clay gives after years additional good taste to the food. 😋 It's also recommendable to have water jar out of clay, which gives helathy minerals to the water and keeps it very cool and fresh.

I wish everybody can see this. Not only mothers even we ourselves no longer place security on the food we consume. I remember a while back, I was taking soft drink and a baby beside me started crying, I couldn't give the drink because she was just five months old, but the lady holding thought I was just being stingy and I had to explain how unsafe it was for the girl, she didn't seem convinced and I had to let the issue slide.

Parenting and working is not easy but the lives of the children matters, giving a child everything does not mean a good life and find a way to balance work and home. I hope mothers will take note of this. This is educative I will be in the lookout for the remaining parts

True enough that we have t be conscious for the family's food consumption and diet, especially when your kids are quite picky and plenty of foods not allowed to them. I think I agree that we have to read and check the descriptions particularly the ingredients added to the canned goods.

Yes Denny, we have to be very conscious of these little things as they have a very big role to play in our overall well-being. Truly we have really drawn back in the aspect of checking the content of most of our canned products not even the expiration date.

Being food conscious is very important for our well-being especially with young children as their systems might be averse to certain foods. For picky eaters, it's best that those foods they don't like are incorporated in small portions into the ones they like.

I also unconsciously read labels(for drugs especially) and browse out their ingredients an side effects. It has saved me from the -quine family's side effect😒

One of the things I do when buying anything outside is checking the expiry date before paying. Once it has expired, I return because I am always conscious of what I eat. Many parents do not take notice of this but just want to satisfy their children when they need any goodies.
Being conscious of the food you give to children will help them stay healthier and fit and not just give out anyhow food just because you are busy pursuing your work or business, neglecting the welfare of your family.

It's really alarming the way parents don't care what their children take into their system, but then they will start running enter skeeter when they are sick. Hmm, it is well sha, God will protect these little ones.

My dear it really not easy as you said.. as a mother that works ro support the family i prefare cooking soup and putting them in the freezer for dinners qlmost through out a week. Then i cook other foods like rice, beans, yam etc every morning before going to work it helps me alot..
But when i feel like i cant cope again i have to give my kids indomie for school.. but thats once in a while.
Anyway, eating balanced diet helps to prevent sickness and even improve the kids intellectual well being.
