Of Unicorns and Strawberry Nesquik

in Motherhood3 years ago (edited)
Unicorns are most majestic and magickal creatures...that have an uncanny knack of disappearing under pillows and then being forgotten there...until the next day - when their kids are 150kms away already.

The last few days have been a whirlwind of activity for us. We had to take a drive to our storage unit 130kms away to consolidate everything. I also needed to renew my drivers license which I've been putting off and putting off. It expired about 2 years ago but with the CV19 lockdowns, the government instituted a grace period where you could drive with an expired license for 3 months, then they extended it and they extended it and well, that grace period is now coming to a close at the end of this month, so it was about time. I am rather short sighted (literally not figuratively) and cannot see anything once it is a few meters away from me. Things become these rather ethereal, fuzzy blobs that tend to float in and out of my focal range.

I drive with glasses as a result because without them signage becomes my absolute arch nemesis and I tend to end up swearing a lot.

Luckily my glasses are all still good to go and I was able to pass my eye test without having to bribe anyone and having prepared all the documents and photos required, I was out of there within minutes. Ahhh, the joy of small towns municipal offices compared to those of the city. Thank you Oudtshoorn for being efficient AF.

While I was planning this trip, I decided that it would be more economical for us to stay over a night than to have to possibly do two trips across two weeks as I doubted I would get it all done in one day. I was right and with the steep rise in the price of fuel, staying overnight seemed far less trouble (and cash) as well as less wear and tear on the car, less wear and tear on my patience and having to exert my muscular superiority over furniture and boxes over the space of as short a time as possible was first prize. This all culminated in the decision to book an Air BnB. We chose the cheapest room there was and that is where Flyzee the Unicorn became hidden under a pillow by Lory

and forgotten.
SIGH

Luckily the owner of the establishment (called StoneHenge) was really lovely about it and messaged me asking how he can return Flyzee to her rightful place in Lory's menagerie of stuffed toys. I was very grateful and paid the cost of having said toy shipped back to us. Flyzee would stay overnight in Johanie's care (the owner's daughter) who seemed quite enamored with the little knitted critter.

Two years ago Lory asked me to knit her a rainbow unicorn. I had not tried to crochet a unicorn before but I was up for the challenge. I found a pattern and Flyzee the unicorn was born. Unfortunately I've never got around to putting eyes on her...when I wanted to Lory forbade me from doing so and decided that eye shadow eyes was perfectly acceptable instead.

Lory and Flyzee have been almost inseparable until now. Flyzee also has a partner in crime lazily lovingly named Flyee who was the second rainbow unicorn I ever made.

So I had made a deal with Lory that if she was well behaved the whole trip, I would buy her strawberry Nesquik. I'm not going to punish her for forgetting her best friend under her pillow as I think the realization that she had left her there was traumatic enough - accidents happen and I've left stuff behind in places before too, I'm just really glad that we can get Flyzee back with minimal expense and not having to negotiate a hostage situation. All that I can say is that I am truly grateful that there are still honest people in the world who are willing to re-unite lost stuffed toys with their youngians.

I was thinking that maybe Flyzee needs her own adventure series, she's been to quite a few places and clearly been in some rather interesting situations. Perhaps that's what Lory can write about on her account one day soon.

I'm using it as an opportunity to teach Lory some personal responsibility but I also think she might enjoy the process of receiving Flyzee in a courier flybag way too much.

I like the idea of making a unicorn for the daughter of the owner at the accommodation as you mention in your comment to Boomy. Nice gesture. I'm glad Flyzee is on the way home.

Hi Galen. Thanks for the message. I must admit that I felt rather foolish when I got that email from the owner, I had double checked the room to make sure we didn't leave anything(one) behind, not that well I guess. Lesson learned. It was very kind of them so I think crocheting a unicorn for the daughter is a nice gesture... Put some good stuff out into the unicorn universe too.

I'm hoping Flyzee is enjoying her trip home.

Have a nice night and hopefully make up for the lost sleep.

I am so glad the two are to be reunited! You know, having both left, and had to send, stuff back to people, it's always worth it. For everyone. It reminds me of a business trip with four academics...hahaha!

And, @therneau is talking about about Hive accounts for his kids. I know that @zakludic and @claremoby's kids have accounts. In a recent thread on one of his posts we talked about a children's community. It occurs to me that this could be an initiative you might be interested in. Anyhow, I'm tagging them and consider you all introduced! And, you're all Saffas!

Hi @fionasfavourites

Thank you so much for the message and for letting me know about this idea, it sounds like it could be loads of fun actually. Hello to @therneau nice to meet you. @zakludic and @claremoby and I have happened upon each other previously and I believe I follow both of them. I have made an account for Lory but I have no real idea what to post there so it's just kind of sitting there getting some benefactor rewards lol.

Yes, I'm keen to get her toy back to her and I am very appreciative of their honesty. I think that it does make them stick out that they were willing to go the extra mile.

Have a good Sunday everyone.

Hi @andrastia, it's a pleasure to meet you too. Wrt the community for the youngsters, it's still early days. A mere thought at best, lol. We're very keen to get something like that going though, so I'll keep you in the loop if you'd like 😊

Hi @therneau

Thanks so much for the message and greeting. Yes please, I would love to be kept abreast of the happenings and if I can help.

Many thanks 🙂

Thanks for the intro's @fionasfavourites, much appreciated!

Bless! I'm so glad to hear that Flyzee has been found, and is winging her way home to Lory.

Annabelle 😊

Hi Annabelle

Thank you so much for reading my post, yesterday was quite a trying day when Lory realized that Flyzee wasn't in the suitcase and she was so relieved to see the photo of Johanie looking after her. I've started making the new one to give to Johanie when I go there next month to collect my license. I think it will be nice.

I hope you are well and having a lovely weekend.

That's such a lovely thing to do! I'm sure Johanie will love her...

Annabelle 😊

I think so, it should make her day and will hopefully be treasured for years to come.

I reckon it will - I still have toys that were unexpected gifts, and they hold so much meaning...

That’s tough! Thankfully we haven’t really had much of an attachment to things with our son. Maybe because he’s so destructive hahaha. Things don’t usually last!

I’m glad that there are nice people in the world! I know there’s more than we realize but glad they got in touch with you for you to return the rainbow unicorn to your daughters side!

Hi @cmplxty

Thanks for stopping by and having a read.

Well, to be fair, you do have a little boy - and little boys tend to want to know how things work and they get VERY good at dismantling and deconstructing toys. Who knows, maybe you have a little engineer on your hands.

Gosh, yes it was quite a difficult day to be honest, but Lory was so happy when I told her that we'd get Flyzee back. She's now watching me making the new one which we'll drop off next month with the little girl :)

Hope you and the family are doing well on that side.

I have long realised the weakness of unicorns. It's almost like their superpower is getting lost and misplaced! That was nice of the man to return it like that

Hi Boomy

Yes, that is most definitely their superpower, I don't know how many times I've had to look for Flyzee before bedtime. I am exceptionally grateful to the owner and his daughter - I've actually decided to crochet his daughter her own one because she was so taken with Flyzee, he sent me a photo of her, Flyzee in her arms, massive smile on her face. I'd like her to smile like that for a bit longer 😄
