How Ukrainian Refugees are living in Almere, Netherlands | 11 months of the war in Ukraine - life update

in Team Ukraine2 years ago (edited)

Hunger makes people crazy and drives an individual out of their minds. I have seen hungry people in life but when it comes to talking about refugees, I saw hunger makes people angry too. This week was a lot for me, not only I had a minor accident but also I experienced many things and learned lessons in life as well. Why I talked about hunger? There is a major reason that I am going to share today. But before that let me give you a quick update on my health and what exactly happened to me recently.

My health is okay now and my wounds are almost healed as well. Well, I stay in a small room given by Almere municipality with my dog Gigi. Gigi is growing and her energy level is insane. Sometimes she drives me nuts and a long walk is not adequate for her. So when she is full of energy and so happy, she starts doing zoomies. At that moment she enjoys her own moment to release her energy; that moment is very difficult to handle her. I also don't bother her because I know she needs to release her energy and also needs to feel good. So, a few days ago she was running so fast in the room and suddenly she jumped on me. As a result, I got hurt in my left eye and for a while, I couldn't even bear the pain. I thought my eye is completely damaged because she scratched me in my eye. She was fast and couldn't control herself.

I was in so much pain and then I noticed I was bleeding. Initially, I thought that something serious happened but fortunately, the inside of my eye was okay. It was a thin save but the outer portion of my eye has got hurt and now it almost healed. Besides, a day before yesterday in the early morning, blood was coming out from my nose and I still don't know why that happened. I have been taking a lot of stress lately because I don't want to stay in this small room anymore. Besides, I always take pressure thinking about my job, life, career, and everything. So, in the end, the reason for the bleeding from my nose is still unknown.

Recently our shelter doesn't provide adequate food for us, I mean for the refugees from Ukraine. The food amount was so limited that people didn't get enough food throughout the week. There was not enough bread, eggs, milk, and fruit in the morning and during lunch, and also food got finished during dinner time as well within 30 minutes. So people stay hungry. Those who are doing their job go outside to buy food but the people who don't have any job, for example, the people who have serious medical conditions and old people, for them it was very difficult without a proper meal. Not only people did fight with each other for food but also people shared bread with each other just to eat something. In my opinion, breakfast and dinner are the most important meal and this situation happened for the entire week. This is how refugees from Ukraine are being treated by some companies.

The municipality is paying a lot of money for the refugees to the company but in the end, companies somehow not using the money properly and keeping people hungry day by day. I see everything and I know everything but I don't say anything. People were angry but in the end, they said that at least they are safe and can survive with one bread with coffee for the entire day. They considered one bread for the entire day as a food/meal. The dinner situation is horrible, some people get food, some only get rice and vegetables and others don't get anything except the rice.

This situation happened due to a lack of proper management and efficiency. I believe the food shortage happened due to ignorance of the organization regarding the refugee issue. I have been noticing this situation for a long time and observed it closely so I came up with this conclusion...

GOPR0159_1666547170415.jpg

I still have a source to write and share everything; some don't have any option except surviving in this situation. We are grateful but still without food I believe it's very difficult to live life. The mental condition of a refugee is very difficult to understand because already they are going through a lot. Life is very difficult for them already and circumstances took everything from them. Such kind of sad, uncertain situation makes a refugee's life more miserable. But still, we are grateful that we have a safe place to stay, we have a roof and a bed to sleep in. We have hot water in our room and we get coffee and tea every day for breakfast and lunch.

I consider this week to be a bad and unlucky week. It could have been worse but I'm glad my eyesight is safe and undamaged.

I want to finish this post here because I am on medication for my eye. I worked the whole week with the injured eye and finally, its injury is getting better.

Thanks for reading... See you soon...

Love

There should never be hunger in the developed nations of the world. Such a sad situation. 😢 I'm glad you eye is healing with no lasting damage! What a frightening thing that must have been! 💜

Sadly the situation is getting worst and it's hard to believe how some organizations who decided to take care of the refugees treat them so badly. People don't say anything because they are helpless and as I have said, refugees from Ukraine said it's better to live on one bread instead of living in the war...

I had a rough week because of my eye condition. It healed almost now and I will be more careful next time...

Thank you @thekittygirl, have a wonderful weekend dear...

Aw, I am so sorry about your eye injury, I know myself how horribly uncomfortably is as I have a recurrent problem with one eye. Hope it heals soon and glad it is healing and was only a scare.
Wishes for a speedy recovery

Hi dear, I hope you are doing well. Darn, that eye situation was horrible and it still freaks me out because as I have said, for a while I thought I was going to be blind. I need to be more careful about my health and also everybody is saying I need to go to the doctor to do a check-up for the eye.

Thank you so much...

Goodness, there is no shortage of food in any European city. There are organisations working on food sharing (distributing and collecting food) everywhere. People collect food from private homes and businesses that would otherwise throw it away. If you go to a food chain and talk to the store manager, he will immediately assure you that you will get enough for you and the people you know - otherwise talk to the food sharing organisers in Germany, they can surely help you (website: https://foodsharing.de/). People are all concerned about the refugees and will be only too happy to help, if only to look good. You can either meet them in their vanity or in their compassion. If there is one problem that does not exist, it is starvation. Of course, the longer-term prospects of people who have had to leave their homes are quite different. But the most urgent problem of "hunger" does not arise here at present.

From the beginning when the war broke out, Germany was dealing with the situation nicely and the whole of Europe welcomes all the refugees from Ukraine. Here in the Netherlands, a lot of help is available as well but currently, things are complicated because of the rules and regulations. People are helping each other still and the government is trying its best to help the refugees. But due to a lack of management and ignorance, the food is not reaching the refugees. For example, in my shelter, currently, 250 refugees are living but there is always a shortage of food. Why this is happening? Because the organization that is responsible for providing the food is not doing their work properly and mismanagement caused this issue. As a result, for one week, not adequate food has been delivered.

Already letter has been sent to the municipality regarding this issue.

Thanks for discussing this issue...

Insofar as things don't work out on the organisational side, what is stopping you and your fellow refugees from taking things into your own hands? If you are waiting for food and it doesn't come, wouldn't it be sensible to take action yourself?

You will surely have a supermarket nearby where you can get in touch with the store manager to shorten the distances and bypass the middleman. In addition, there will be just as many organisations in the Netherlands as in Germany, such as the "Tafel", which provides food in many places and is networked with the state-organised agencies. There are sure to be many social counselling centres in your neighbourhood where people are eager to help you and also mess with those who have the organisation of food and other aid under their supervision.

Where an emergency is disclosed by those affected, you can always count on it to generate enough action to put an end to the food supply stoppage. But you have to do something if it doesn't happen on its own. If a letter is enough to resolve the situation, assume that a complaint is enough to get the food supply flowing again. But then such complaints about something not working are less relevant and, as always in life, the one who complains loudly then gets his need met. Just don't expect everything to run smoothly all the time. That would be unrealistic.

Do you think I am complaining here and asking for help? I guess you don't follow up on my articles and I also work for refugees. You are talking about Tafel, which provides refugee dinner, with 1 box containing 10 packets of rice, and 1 package of meat for 20 people but in the end, the meat is not enough for 20 people. Now tell me one thing, I go to the Tafel and say please help me, and where I will get the money to buy the food for the 270 refugees? Using my own salary?

I work in F&B where refugees eat and I guess I know the situation and how things work here. Silgro (supermarket) provides food for the morning {breakfast/lunch) but if someone from the organization messed up the order or does not understand how much should be ordered then what Tafel and the supermarket can do? Tefal and Silgro provide food for 1 week and because of the incompetence and irresponsible attitude of someone from the organization who is getting money from the government and responsible for ordering the food, this happened. Last but not least, on Saturday and Sunday, no food delivery chain works.

When a specific organization works for a specific refugee shelter, other organization doesn't want to get involved.

Just don't expect everything to run smoothly all the time. That would be unrealistic.

I really wish I could show you what exactly happening here every day... If you don't understand my point then please no need to argue...

Peace...

Yes, you are complaining and that is my response to your complaint about incompetent organisations.

Take my statement as "if one body doesn't work, there are other bodies that do work and want to get involved". If there is no foodsharing organisation in the Netherlands yet, start it with people who want to and can do it. Use the skills and experience of the German network for this, for example.

To be able to counteract bottlenecks like the one you are experiencing now.

For some time, I worked with my husband as a food collector and we cycled to the various bakeries, supermarkets and event locations to collect the food. As long as there are supermarkets with full shelves, bakeries that have to throw away their goods due to overproduction and events that have food catering with leftover food, you can count on the collection and distribution to work. If one place doesn't work, switch to alternatives. There are always ways to get food.

Now tell me one thing, I go to the Tafel and say please help me, and where I will get the money to buy the food for the 270 refugees? Using my own salary?

You don't need money for this. You need people and work on those things which are promising and abandon those who aren't.

If you don't want help or suggestions in response to a situation you describe as a need, then rephrase it.

Yes, you are complaining and that is my response to your complaint about incompetent organisations.

If you think sharing my thoughts is a complaint then you get everything wrong.

pathetics don't work on me.

I wish you the best of health, hopefully the reason for the bleeding in the nose is discovered, and it can be treated well.

Hopefully your situation improves so that you can move on your own and have more space for you and Gigi, she needs to burn energy, and being in a closed and small place does not help her.

Thinking about hunger, when food is scarce, humans can be very irritable, violent, annoying, irritable... in short, it's not good and it makes a difficult life situation even worse.

I can only wish things get better for everyone.

My health condition is not so good and I need to see a doctor immediately but here the medical system is really complicated and I need to find my family doctor as well. I was registered somewhere and I think I have lost all the connection now so I need to do it again...

Gigi has so much energy and I understand her behavior as well. I was careless and next time I will be more careful.

Regarding refugees' food situation, it is getting worst day by day because it is considered free food though DUTCH Government is paying a lot of money to the organization. But it is the organization that has some sort of management issues and now there is always food scarcity...

The situation you describe is very bad, I can't do more than give moral support, and pray that everything improves soon.

It means a lot to me, I just wanted to share the current situation and to be honest we can't do much... I really appreciate your words...

You're Welcome

It is a rather unpleasant situation, in my country there are many such situations. And in a way I can understand his explanation.
Hunger can do terrible things to people. It is something that no one wants to see or have to go through.

I hope your eye heals without major complications.

Every country has some issues no matter whether they are developed or developing countries. But some terrible situation makes me wonder if is there anywhere I can find peace. Here, nowadays people have to go through a lot every day. The situation is really unfortunate for disabled or older people...

The eye situation was extremely scary, there was a chance I could have lost my eyesight...

I really hope you don't have more damage to your health. It is difficult for refugees in those conditions. There is nothing I can say to help you in that situation. I can only try to cheer you up a little. Take care.

Ya to avoid further damage, I should see a doctor soon or have to take some help at least. My condition is not so bad, it's just I am now focusing on my health...

Food for us is the important thing. It seems that the consumption of the world is increasing dramatically, but still some people face the lack of food and water as well. I think as we live in the same planet, sharing is a good thing for us to do as well as to help those needed people.

It seems that the consumption of the world is increasing dramatically, but still some people face the lack of food and water as well.

Exactly and after noticing the market price due to inflation, I guess in the future many people will die because of hunger...

Sharing is caring always...

Have you ever had personal experience of collecting and distributing food?

In Germany and the Netherlands, for example, to name just two examples, at least no one really has to go hungry.

There are countless aid organisations that you can easily find and that don't put up any hurdles to get food. At any rate, food is the least of all problems here. You just need to know the addresses and names of social centres and food distribution points - a few clicks away. I accompanied my husband for a while who joined the foodsharing organisation and they have agreements with countless supermarkets and bakeries etc. who give their leftover goods to the collectors.

We regularly had problems redistributing the vast amounts of food left over from supermarkets, events and bakery shops. Because no one could even eat all the food themselves or redistribute it to their circles. So people go around wanting to give the food to the homeless and they just wave it off because they get enough to eat. Food is not the problem in western societies. As long as the discounters have goods in abundance on the shelves, events with food-caterings take place, no one will die or suffer from hunger. It is complete nonsense to even believe such things.

Take care, @Priyanarc!

Thanks my dear...

Zoomies are hilarious, but outside and not in a small room. I'm pleased your eye is getting better. I know you are very grateful to have a roof over your head, but it must be hard living in one room, day after day. I really hope something comes along, so your situation improves for both you and Gigi. 💖

Well, next time I will make a short video featuring GIGI's unique zoomies but yes, I am going to be more careful when she attempts to do that next time. Because my eye condition could have been worst instead of scratched...

It is becoming more and more challenging staying in this room because I don't have a kitchen or sitting place. All I have to do is on the bed and I have a small table where I have kept my laptop. I was looking for the rent of the apartment and I can't afford that now :D so plan was canceled...

It's better to stay in a small room than nothing...

Yes, of course, but I understand the need to move somewhere bigger. I always think sometimes good things turn up when you least expect them.

I love dog's doing zoomies but in the right place lol.

I always think sometimes good things turn up when you least expect them.

Me too and in the Netherlands, housing is a big issue and many DUTCH people don't have their own place. That's why it is very difficult to find a big space for the dog like Gigi.

Zoomies are always fun to watch and like you said it is hilarious but in the room :D

Thank you so much WES...

@priyanarc,

You are most welcome... You know I am not alone. When I say it just sucks what you are going through. Yes... I know people are going through terrible situations, all over the world. But referring to those in particular... such as yourself, and everyone from Ukraine... that's what I am referencing here. The concept of "misappropriated funding" seems to be something that trending, sadly.

The municipality is paying a lot of money for the refugees to the company but in the end, companies somehow not using the money properly and keeping people hungry day by day.

This leaves a bad impression on the municipalities... when they are just trying to help. You would think with all the bad going on. People would put aside all the greed and corruption; making sure people are doing okay... have enough to eat... a place that's safe and comfortable. That should be the main focus... but this is not always the case... As I said... this just sucks. But you show those people doing wrong, how to properly handle the situation:

But still, we are grateful that we have a safe place to stay, we have a roof and a bed to sleep in. We have hot water in our room and we get coffee and tea every day for breakfast and lunch.

There's that old saying... "When the going gets tough... the tough get going". That's you, my friend. I do hope you are having a good weekend. Keep being awesome... we love you.

Wonderful wise words and yes, this is one of the trending topics in the whole world, unfortunately. Corruption and greed are everywhere...

I'm glad you still have your eyesight 😲 Is there any fenced in area where Gigi can run around safely outdoors? The zoomies are not good for either of you :(

Is there any fenced in area where Gigi can run around safely outdoors?

We have here one but it's very very far away and can't go there without a bus or train. I wish it was nearby :(

and can't go there without a bus or train.

How about solving two problems at once? If you are good on rollerblades, she can pull you that way. Otherwise it might be good to get something with at least three wheels, that you can push and ride on almost like a scooter but more stable, and Gigi can choose to pull or not?

This idea reminded me that I should train her to run while I ride my bicycle as spring is coming and then she will definitely become tired. I know she will pull but if I can train her, definitely it will work. What do you think?

It will work, but for a bike you will need to order a special skijoring rope, otherwise she will put too much force into it, and you'll get hurt again...
