Comic Book Recommendations #8: Deathblow and Wolverine

I know my way around Comic Books. I've had a Comic Book Store since 1992 and I've read since then around 15-20 issues per week, mostly to be able to sell those titles to my customers and to make them fall in love with the stories so they become avid readers and thus, avid buyers.

This is a new section of my blog where I'll make some comic book reviews and recommend some titles to anyone reading my entries.

A crossover in Comic Books happens when a character literally crosses from his own comic title, over another one's title, paying them a visit, and some times this can even happen from one publishing house to another.

In this type of situations the crossover is not consequential to neither characters' storyline and the story doesn't carry any weight or importance in neither characters' arc, but the cool and important part of the crossover is the interaction the heroes have between each other and, some times this leads to some of the best stories ever written, and most of the times it leads to fun and entertaining stories, especially if you are familiar with both superheroes, or at least one of them.

Deathblow & Wolverine, a Marvel's character and an Image's hero, both ex-army who have seen what horrors the war can bring and how much death it attracts, but which each of them confronts in a different way due to their personal stories.

The biggest value of this crossover lies in Aaron Wiesenfeld, the one who wrote it and who also is in charge of the breakdown (the base drawing, the narrative, page design, structure trace) and the inking by Richard Bennet, a legend from the 90's.

Aaron Wiesenfeld, is an architect as his job and a painter as his hobby, and he's long gone from the comic book industry and now is formally a painter with several expos around the world. In this 2-issue crossover he indulges us with amazing perspectives using San Francisco's city view. Richard Bennett also left the comic book scene and went to hollywood as a concept and story board artist.

Both artists leaving our scene is a huge loss to the Graphic Narrative industry, but such is life. Still, if you have the chance, this is a great short story to read and if you find them in physical form, you should definitely buy them.

Love that first image of Wolvie getting some air on his bike. So much city. That must have taken forever to draw.
