Getting your daily dose of fresh air, snow, sunlight and a bit of winter wonderland? Come to Austria and hike with us to the top of Oberlech!
After slowly waking up on our offday, we found out it was a beautiful, sunny day to do some gentle mountain walk and enjoy the snow. We wanted to go to a new place, so we picked Oberlech, the top of the mountain, not the village itself. We went there once in summer so we knew the area, but we never saw it covered in snow!
Hii! I am Sascha and I will show you around today!
We took the bus from Zug to Lech, and Lech to Oberlech, and left the bus at the last stop. Even though there is so much snow, buses are always running in winter, if necessary with chains around the tires, for extra grip. The Austrians aren't scared of a little snow. And there is a lot of snow here in the mountain area. In the Valley it is "just" 145 cm (4,6 feet), but on the higher mountains, like we visited today, it can be up to 260 cm (89 feet). Yes, that's a lot!
This picture was taken while on the bus. Look at the layer of snow on the roof. Did you know Roof Avalanches (lawines) are a thing here after heavy snowfall? Pretty dangerous when it all falls down :p
On the way up to Oberlech, we passed by another beautiful village, which we could see from higher up the mountain. It looked stunning from above. When we arrived home I checked it on the map and found out that the village is called Stubenbach. Maybe the destination for next time. I really love the atmosphere of those Austrian villages.
Bus views!
The village called Stubenbach
Besides the bus, there are some other ways to go up: walk or take the ski lift. The ski lift can bring you up directly from Lech all the way to the top, but we picked the bus since it is free, but next time we will take the lift up, and fly right through the landscape.
It is possible to walk up all the way, take a bus or the ski lifts
Arriving at the last bus stop of the bus to Oberlech, we were right away in paradise. It is so beautiful there! So much nicer than in Serfaus, the place I lived when Corona started. Lech Area is definitely a must visit in Austria.
We started our walk and had to cross the ski piste, the skiers often rush down very fast, to gain their daily dose of adrenaline. We had to cross the piste, the rest of the walk went by a proper walking path without skiers. Much safer and mostly better for the skiers and snowboarders, so we did not have to bother them.
You see that little yellow dot in the shot? That's a skier ⛷️
After a little walk we passed by one of the many red couches to be found around Lech, and we sat down a bit. We did not come for a long walk as Samuel is a chef, and already easily 60 hours a week on his Lech as a chef, and In busy February it might be more. Instead we chose one of the short, child friendly but super scenery walks.
Getting your daily dose of daylight and Nature? Come to Austria. I think I made us a pretty nice picture with the timer
But as usual, the picture I took of my boyfriend is much nicer
Beautiful views on the way
Even Samuel, who doesn't love winter so much in Europe, loved it today, the sun made him even feel comfortably hot, which is very uncommon since he is Jamaican/Ghanian. It almost felt like summer, but then prettier.
Do they still need applicants for the Jamaican Bobsled team? I definitely recommend you to watch that movie! Coolrunning it is called :)
I don't know why but his legs look like little snow mountains
Mountains and snow as far as the eye reach
The snow is definitely a good place to play, either for kids or adults when they allow themself is not a secret. I wouldn't say that I am such an adult but I would say that I made a pretty nice snowangel!
Let's make a snow angel!
My creation! Can you do better?
The reflection of the sun in the snow makes the sunshine even stronger
We arrived at the top of our mountain and the view was absolutely breathtaking. The gently waving hills of snow looked so gentle and bright. I feel truly blessed that I can live in such a beautiful place as this, which keeps surprising me week by week.
Look at those curvy snow hills, isn't it stunning?
Follow me to paradise!
After reaching the top, we walked down. But before going home, we wanted to go find a sunny restaurant terrace to enjoy a drink in the sun. We walked into the little village and found Restaurant Mohnenfluh, located directly at the ski piste. It was very busy with people who just finished their day of skiing and snowboarding, enjoying a well deserved meal and a beer.
Some typical austrian buildings we passed by on the way, I love the Austrian architecture
The restaurant we chose for a gluhwein. They have a beautiful balcony at the other side
We ordered an apfelstrudel, an Austrian Delicatessen with apple which tastes really good! Must try in Austria. Besides, we ordered Gluhwein as a drink, a sweet, hot wine common to drink in winter. It is prepared with cinnamon, sugar, star anise, cloves, cardamom and orange, heated for an hour or longer (not boiled because that will make the alcohol disappear). It is absolutely delicious. Try it someday and your life will be better. I might share the recipe some day!
Cheers!
Gluhwein is definitely my Austrian favourite
Thank you for reading my silly little story. I hope you enjoyed my captures and that I made your bucket list a little longer :)
