Manistique - Marvelous Michigan

in Worldmappin2 years ago (edited)

Manistique, on the shores of Lake Michigan, just might be my favorite little town in the Upper Peninsula. The beach right here is a major reason for that... just a short way down the road from shopping and the town proper, it would be a great place to live.

Presumably there is a life ring and other lifesaving equipment in there. I just took the picture because I like the way the red contrasts with the rest of the beach.

The Manistique East Breakwater Lighthouse guards the mouth of the Manistique River from rough water that the weather might stir up.

You can walk all the way out to the lighthouse on the breakwater.

These dead alewife littered the beaches of Lake Michigan - something I remember from the last time I stood on the shores of Lake Michigan - 20-odd years ago on another Fourth of July weekend.

My brief research indicated that it's not uncommon to have an alewife die-off as they aren't native to the cold waters of the Great Lakes - but this year is worse than usual, and they don't know why. Some were rotting, others had dried in the sun... in any case the gulls and pelicans were quite happy with the situation!

Another look back at the breakwater lighthouse.

And another view of the water rescue station...

With the relative lack of trains in our part of Wisconsin, it was nice to see the Canadian National run train line. I'm not sure if it's the same line that runs out onto the ore dock in Marquette, but I like seeing the trains - it's a sign of a reasonably healthy industrial economy.

After this afternoon on the Manistique Beach, we spent one final night at the campground before heading home, back to Wisconsin. But it won't be long before we are back in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Eventually, I want to live here!

I used to follow a YouTuber who lived nearby, more like Lake Michigan than a lake.

There are a few Yooper YouTubers around - I follow a couple myself. Yes, the great lakes are more like small oceans... without the salt.

He lived pretty much what I knew in the Monona area, it seems like a nice area to live in peace, unlike other areas of the US
