My Tour In Greece - Part 3: The Temple of Apollo, Naxos [ENG-TUR]

As I mentioned in my travel posts last year, I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods. I want to discover new places at homeland or abroad as much as possible. Before the pandemic, I traveled abroad every year. However, the pandemic caused millions of people, including me, to change their travel plans for at least 2 years. After the pandemic, it was time for me to start traveling abroad. Last year, I did this by going to Thessaloniki, Greece. This year, my first choice for traveling abroad was again Thessaloniki and some of Cycladic Islands in Greece. In the third part of my travel post series, I will write about the Temple of Apollo and St. George Beach on Naxos Island, one of the Cyclades Islands.

Geçen seneki seyahat yazılarımda da belirttiğim gibi otel, deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil anlayışını sevmiyorum. Yurtiçinde veya yurtdışında mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Pandemiden önce her yıl yurtdışı seyahatleri yapan biriydim. Fakat, pandemi benim gibi dünyada milyonlarca insanların seyahat planlarını en az 2 yıl değiştirmesine sebep oldu. Pandemiden sonra benim için artık yurtdışı seyahatlerime başlamanın zamanı gelmişti. Geçen sene bunu Yunanistan’ın Selanik şehrine giderek gerçekleştirdim. Bu yılki ilk yurtdışı seyahat tercihim yine Selanik ve Yunanistan’ın birkaç Kiklad Adası oldu. Gezi yazısı serimin üçüncü bölümünde sizlere Kiklad Adalarından biri olan Naxos adasında bulunan Apollon Tapınağı ve Aziz George Plajı’ndan bahsedeceğim.

We arrived at Naxos port and found the location where the ship would depart for our destination tomorrow. We could see the Temple of Apollo from the port and the temple was within walking distance. We were tired, but it would be unacceptable to come this far and not see the temple. Perhaps, we wouldn’t have the chance to see the temple tomorrow. We started walking towards the temple, the first thing that greeted us was the Statue of Aphrodite on the breakwater.

We were tired, but it would be unacceptable to come this far and not see the temple. Maybe we wouldn’t have the chance to see the temple tomorrow. We started walking towards the temple, the first thing that greeted us was the Statue of Aphrodite on the breakwater.

Naxos limanına varıp yarınki destinasyonumuz için geminin kalkacağı konumu bulduk. Limandan Apollon Tapınağı’nı görebiliyorduk ve tapınak bize yürüme mesafesindeydi. Yorulmuştuk, ama buraya kadar gelip tapınağı görmemek olmazdı. Belki, yarın tapınağı görme fırsatımız olmayabilirdi. Tapınağa doğru yürümeye başladık, bizi ilk olarak dalgakıran üzerindeki Afrodit Heykeli karşıladı.

Then, we continued walking on the breakwater. After climbing a little bit, we reached the entrance gate of the large and rectangular Temple of Apollo. The Temple of Apollo, also known as Portara, is located on the Palatia Island of Naxos. As its name suggests, the temple was dedicated to Apollo, one of the gods in Greek mythology, but it was never completed. After the acceptance of Christianity, the temple was converted into a church. Since the island of Naxos hosted various civilizations throughout history, there have been changes in this temple over time, and until today only the entrance gate of the temple and the ruins around it have remained.

Daha sonra dalgakıran üzerinde yürümeye devam ettik. Biraz yokuş çıktıktan sonra büyük ve dikdörtgen şeklindeki Apollon Tapınağı’nın giriş kapısına vardık. Apollon Tapınağı, diğer adıyla Portara, Naxos adasına bağlı Palatia adacağının üzerinde bulunmaktadır. Adından da anlaşılacağı gibi tapınak Yunan mitolojisindeki tanrılardan biri olan Apollon’a adanmıştır, ama hiçbir zaman tamamlanamamıştır. Hristiyanlığın kabulünden tapınak kiliseye çevrilmiştir. Naxos adası tarihte çeşitli uygarlıklara ev sahipliği yaptığından bu tapınakta da zamanla değişimler olmuş ve bugün sadece tapınağın giriş kapısı ve etrafındaki yıkıntıları kalmıştır.

We stayed here for about an hour and took photos from almost every angle. Usually everyone comes here for sunset photos, but since we were very tired, we didn’t want to wait any longer and started walking back to the hotel from the way we came. The weather was naturally hot and the sun hadn’t set yet. After resting at the hotel for a while, we decided to go to St. George Beach, which the hotel owner recommended to us and was close to the hotel. We both swimmed in the sea and get some cooling off. We arrived at this beautiful beach after a 10-minute walk with the directions of the hotel owner and our map. Since it was close to sunset, the beach and the sea looked very beautiful.

Biz yaklaşık bir saat burda kalarak hemen hemen her açıdan fotoğraf çektik. Genelde herkes buraya günbatımı fotoğrafı için geliyor, ama biz çok yorulduğumuz için daha fazla beklemek istemedik ve geldiğimiz yoldan otele doğru yürümeye başladık. Hava doğal olarak sıcaktı ve güneş daha batmamıştı. Otelde biraz dinlendikten sonra otel sahibinin bize gitmeyi tavsiye ettiği ve otele yakın bir mesafede olan Aziz George Plajı’na gitmeye karar verdik. Hem biraz denize girmiş hem de serinlemış olurduk. Otel sahbinin ve haritamızın yönlendirmesyiel yaklaşık 10 dakikalık bir yürüyüşün ardından bu güzel plaja vardık. Günbatımına yakın bir zaman olması nedeniyle plaj ve deniz çok güzel görünüyordu.

After swimming, we rested a bit on the beach and had the dinner here. It had been a long day for us, we returned to the hotel and started to rest for our journey tomorrow. See you in the next post of my of my Greece tour. All photos in this post belong to me. Thank you for reading.
