The Transylvanian Village Museum in Orastie, Romania

Hello travelers

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to visit an authentic Romanian museum, an open-air museum.

The Transylvanian Village Museum is located on the outskirts of Orastie. It is quite difficult to get here from the city, meaning that the only option is by car/taxi, as there is no public transportation on this route.

The museum is relatively new (if I may say so figuratively), having opened sometime in 2008. A group of history enthusiasts and preservationists discovered this location on the outskirts of Orastie, where they managed to bring some very old houses and restore them to their former beauty.

These houses are from various rural areas in Romania. If it weren't for these history lovers, these houses would most likely have ended up being burned down.

Being a relatively new museum, there are only a few traditional houses here, but also a very old church.

Most houses are built from river stone. In some areas of Romania, along the banks of certain rivers, this type of stone (slabs) can be found, which can be easily used to build a house. Here in this museum, I even saw a house roof made entirely from stone slabs.

We visited each house individually, but unfortunately, the interiors are not yet furnished. It takes a long time for the people in charge of restoring them to find objects specific to that period somewhere in the Romanian villages, as many of the old objects have either been sold to collectors or destroyed.

We visited this museum on Sunday, during the weekend, and there was an autumn festival combined with an authentic Romanian festival taking place here.

I really like these types of authentic Romanian festivals because they are the only places where we still have the opportunity to see something traditional, from customs to food.

Here we were able to visit and, of course, take pictures with the autumn decorations.
Just before leaving, I discovered that inside one of the houses there was a restaurant and a museum, so I couldn't leave before visiting both.

I must admit that I had a wonderful Sunday, surrounded by so many autumn decorations and so much authentic history displayed in those authentic wooden and stone houses.

Our post today from the Transylvanian Village Museum has come to an end. I hope we have managed to convey the emotions we experienced during our visit to this museum.

THE END!

It's so great that there are people who are passionate about history and preserving these buildings, restoring them to their former glory and beauty, and also creating this wonderful open-air museum where you can walk around, learn and enjoy finding out what life was like in another era.

I loved the old church; looking at the photographs made me feel like I was inside it, it's such a spectacular feeling. As for access by car or taxi, perhaps at some point they will provide public transport if this museum becomes more widely known. It's well worth it.

They are doing a great job, and of course it is difficult to find the necessary period furniture for the houses, but I hope they do it because seeing everything complete must be beautiful. The autumn decorations and the objects you show at the end give a better idea of what the museum is like. I hope it continues to progress. Thank you very much for bringing this place to life. Hugs!

Oh my Gosh, I absolutely love this place. Never knew Transylvania was a real place. Thought it was just a fictional name from the Hotel Transylvania movie. The houses look just as dark but stunning.
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading this :) oh, your photos are lovely too:)

Transylvania really exists, and it is here in Romania, and yes, there are many stories about Transylvania.

These cabins in Romania are truly fantastic; it looks like a scene from a fairy tale.

That's right, but unfortunately such places are becoming increasingly rare, as many people prefer modernity without valuing the past.
Thanks for stopping by.

This museum really preserves Romania’s rural heritage. Nice place!

I'm really glad you liked it, and yes, thanks to museums like this, we can see what houses looked like over 100 years ago.
Unfortunately, these places are becoming increasingly rare. The modern world has taken over, and younger generations are unfamiliar with their predecessors and are not particularly interested in history or other details. This is why many of these old houses and objects end up in the trash or burned.
Thank you for stopping by.

It’s sad that so much of the past is disappearing, but museums like this are true treasures. Hopefully, sharing experiences like yours can inspire younger generations to appreciate and preserve history, even in small ways.

Romania looks like a really beautiful country! I had always thought it would be cool to visit there one day.

That's right, Romania has a lot to offer. Here you can find mountains, a delta (the Danube Delta), and the sea (the Black Sea). Now it depends on each person's preferences, but I think it's a very beautiful country.
You've probably heard of Dracula (the vampire). His castle is also here in Romania, and there are many places to visit.
Thank you very much for stopping by,

I have heard of Dracula, but I was more interested in that famous waterfall I think you have there. My wife's uncle was a diplomat for Romania I think back when she was younger. He has passed away now, but it would have been cool to visit the country with him.

There are many things to see in Romania. I am very sorry about your wife's uncle. I wish you success in visiting Romania at some point.

Thank you!
