🗺 Mazatlán – A Walk through the Center of Mexico’s northwestern Beach Metropolis [EN/DE]

In my last post, I already told you about the total solar eclipse in Mazatlán on April 8 this year. But of course, the beach metropolis in north-west Mexico also has a lot to offer when there is no cosmic spectacle taking place. In addition to countless beaches and hotels along the coast, you can also find a fairly large old town, which my girlfriend and I decided to explore. In this post, I'd like to tell you all about what we experienced and how we liked it.

Im letzten Beitrag habe ich euch bereits von der totalen Sonnenfinsternis in Mazatlán am 08. April dieses Jahres erzählt. Doch natürlich hat die Strand-Metropole im Nordwesten Mexikos auch einiges zu bieten, wenn gerade kein kosmisches Spektakel stattfindet. Neben unzähligen Stränden und Hotels entlang der Küste, gibt es auch eine ziemlich große Altstadt, die meine Freundin und ich natürlich erkunden wollten. Was wir dabei alles erlebt haben und wie sie uns gefallen hat, möchte ich euch in diesem Beitrag erzählen.

Passing the Mazatlán lettering and many sculptures that were installed for the solar eclipse, we took a taxi directly to the city center. Plaza República is the name of the city's main square. Here you will find a garden with a kiosk and the impressive, yellow shining cathedral of Mazatlán. Also here we found a sculpture on the occasion of the solar eclipse. After we had seen everything and taken a few photos, we decided to visit the church from the inside.

Vorbei am Mazatlán-Schriftzug und vielen Skulpturen, die anlässlich der Sonnenfinsternis aufgebaut wurden ging es mit dem Taxi direkt ins Stadtzentrum. Plaza República heißt der Hauptplatz der Stadt. Hier findet man einen Garten mit einem Kiosk und die beeindruckende, gelb leuchtende Kathedrale von Mazatlán. Außerdem fanden wir auch hier eine Skulptur anlässlich der Sonnenfinsternis. Nachdem wir alles gesehen hatten und ein paar Fotos geschossen hatten, beschlossen wir die Kirche von innen zu besichtigen.

The interior of the cathedral was also beautifully designed. After looking around, we continued our walk and wanted to know what else there was to discover in the city center. Overall, it seemed very relaxed and quiet. We soon reached Plazuela Machado - another important square in the old town. Here, too, we liked the relaxed atmosphere.

Auch die Innenräume der Kathedrale waren sehr schön gestaltet. Nachdem wir uns umgeschaut hatten, setzten wir unseren Spaziergang fort und wollten wissen, was es sonst noch im Stadtzentrum zu entdecken gibt. Dieses wirkte insgesamt sehr entspannt und ruhig. Bald erreichten wir den Plazuela Machado – einen weiteren wichtigen Platz in der Altstadt. Auch hier gefiel uns die entspannte Atmosphäre.

Now some general information about the city: Mazatlán has around 500,000 inhabitants and is located on the Pacific coast in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. The port of Mazatlán is one of the most important in Mexico and is very significant for fishing and international trade. The city is known for its 21-kilometer-long Malecon – one of the longest waterfront promenades in the world. However, the historic center with its well-preserved colonial buildings and rich cultural heritage also make Mazatlán a popular destination for tourists.

Nun ein paar allgemeine Infos zur Stadt: Mazatlán hat ungefähr 500.000 Einwohner und liegt an der Pazifikküste im mexikanischen Bundesstaat Sinaloa. Der Hafen von Mazatlán ist einer der wichtigsten Mexikos und hat eine hohe Bedeutung für die Fischerei sowie den internationalen Handel. Die Stadt ist bekannt für ihren 21 Kilometer langen Malecon – eine der längsten Uferpromenaden der Welt. Doch auch das historische Zentrum mit seinen gut erhaltenen Kolonialbauten und das reichhaltige kulturelle Erbe machen Mazatlán zu einem beliebten Reiseziel für Touristen.

The previously mentioned Malecon was our next destination. Here we walked along the sea and found many interesting sculptures, observation towers, cafés, restaurants and, of course, beaches. We also passed the so-called Cueva del Diabolo (Devil's Cave) with its remarkable red gate, but unfortunately it was not open. There would have been much more to explore along the Malecon, but we were already a little tired and ordered a taxi to take us back to the hotel.

Der soeben erwähnte Malecon war unser nächstes Ziel. Hier spazierten wir am Meer entlang und fanden viele interessante Skulpturen, Aussichtstürme sowie Cafés, Restaurants und natürlich Strände. Wir kamen auch an der sogenannten Cueva del Diabolo (Teufelshöhle) mit ihrem markanten roten Tor vorbei, leider war dieses jedoch nicht geöffnet. Es hätte noch viel mehr entlang des Malecon zu erkunden gegeben, doch wir waren bereits etwas müde und bestellten uns ein Taxi, das und zurück ins Hotel brachte.

Mazatlán really is a very interesting city with its very own character and many impressive sights. Unfortunately, the sea water was very cold, the waves very high and there was a constant chilly wind. For a pure beach vacation, I would therefore prefer other Mexican coastal towns. We were glad that our hotel had a heated pool. However, the interesting city center and the almost endlessly long Malecon ensured that we never got bored and really enjoyed our time in Mazatlán.

Mazatlán ist wirklich eine sehr interessante Stadt, die ihren ganz eigenen Charakter hat und mit vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten beeindruckt. Leider war das Meerwasser sehr kalt, die Wellen sehr hoch und es wehte ständig ein kühler Wind. Für einen reinen Badeurlaub würde ich andere mexikanische Küstenstädte deshalb vorziehen. Wir waren froh, dass unser Hotel über einen beheizten Pool verfügte. Das sehenswerte Stadtzentrum und der schier unendlich lange Malecon sorgten aber dafür, dass uns nie langweilig wurde und wir unsere Zeit in Mazatlán sehr genossen.
