Since I moved to the western suburbs of Melbourne, I have had a number of opportunities to visit around the area. I have been particularly impressed with the lovely towns here. Last weekend I was able to visit the Newport Lakes in another wonderful town- "Newport" and was impressed with its beauty. It was a perfect day to be outside, and the lakes park is the perfect place to be. 🙂
Newport town is another charming seaside town located on the western side of Melbourne. If you're looking for a day trip that won't take up too much time, the lake is the perfect destination. Though it's not very big, the reserve offers plenty to do and see.
Newport lakes were once a rubbish tip, but the council cleaned it up and made it into a natural reserve. They dug up the blue stone from the ground to make it more aesthetically pleasing. That's why the blue stone is found everywhere around the lake. It is a good formation and strong which makes it perfect for construction.
That sign must be number 8 presenting for something I guess :)
I highly recommend to read the full story of the lake here. From trash to treasure: a suburb's slice of tranquillity- The article was published 10 years ago and I found it very interesting to read.
Newport Lakes- Hobsons bay is a great place to walk and immerse in nature. It is located in the heart of Newport, just minutes from the center. The park offers a variety of trails for all levels of hikers, from easy to moderate. The area is now full of wildlife and is a popular spot for bird watching.
The transformation is amazing, and the view is now breathtaking. The Govt and local authority did a great job :)
The lakes area of the 33-hectare park has been extensively revegetated using native plants, with over 200 species of plants and 165 species of birds recorded here. Source
There are also plenty of benches and picnic tables for resting and enjoying the scenery. The best time to visit is early morning or evening when the crowds are smaller and the temperatures are cooler.
The lake is home to many different kinds of birds, fish and other wildlife, making it a great place for your kids to learn about nature. There are also plenty of picnic areas and BBQs around the lake, so you can make a day of it.
In the middle of the lake, you'll find a rock path that's perfect for a leisurely stroll. As you walk, you can take in the lovely sight of swans swimming and the peaceful surrounding. It's the perfect way to unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature.
A couple of swans were seen swimming peacefully in the lake. The water rippled around them as they gracefully moved their necks back and forth. It was a beautiful sight to see. The swans looked so content and serene, almost as if they were in their own little world. It was a moment of pure joy and peace. I could just sit there for hours to enjoy the sight😍
It's great that the Newport Lake bird population is very diverse, with many different species of birds represented. The most common birds seen at the lake are ducks, geese, and swans, but there are also plenty of other birds. You can check out their name here. This variety of birds makes Newport Lake a great place for birdwatching.
We spotted a little blue tongue lizard on the way to our car. He was basking in the sun, and we stopped to take a picture. We had never seen a lizard up close before, and he was so cute! We watched him for a few minutes while giving him the way :)
If you're looking for a peaceful and picturesque nature walk around Melbourne, look no further than the Newport lake. The lake is a great addition to the already lovely towns in the western part of Melbourne.

I'm sure I should already know but I don't, when did you move to Australia? How, why? I must know! = }
Yes sure @dandays, I moved to Australia in mid-June after recovering from my operations. The reason I'm here now is that I came to Aus with a Working Holiday Visa, and I'm living in the western part of Melbourne. :) Glad to see you stopping by 🙂
That sounds like fun, so you're on limited time then? What is it, 6 months?
Of course. Thanks for having me.
The funny fact is that I'm holding working holiday visa, but I work more than I take a vacation. At least a year now @dandays. I'll see how everything goes 🙂, maybe stay longer :)
Hey @trangbaby thanks for sharing! The rock path looks so nice to go for a stroll! I want to be there ASAP! and the swans pictures with the red beak look so cute!!! Really enjoyed your post! ☀️
The swans so cute and they do look content. What a life haha. The place is worth a visit ❤️ Thanks for stopping and am glad you enjoyed it. :)

I wanted to come and say hi, because I noticed that you showed support on my intro post and wanted to show my appreciation, so thank you. Nice to meet you, I am Ella as you obviously know now :)
I have never been to Australia but the wildness of it looks really beautiful! The enormous lakes look incredible, but I suppose you cannot swim in them? :D
Thank you Ella, it's my pleasure and nice to meet you too. I'm Trang from Viet Nam. After reading the intro post, I believe that you will be a great and inspired writer so I hope it can be seen more. Take time to explore around and you will figure everything out. 🙂
I don't think that we can swim here, if yes, I wouldn't dare to take it as it's still winter and cold here at the moment :)
Thanks for stopping by and have a great day to you :)
Thx for welcoming me and for reading my post :) hope you have a great day as well
Trang, so glad you are getting out and exploring and that this place is so close you could go often. Maybe you will become a bird watcher? It is fun you saw the lizard. I see them often and they are cute!
Thank you Sara, so many places close here and I'll spend more time exploring around soon as the weather getting warmer here. Yeah I've seen many kind of different birds but wasn't able to take pictures of them. I'm so glad that I saw the lizard he so cute :)
