I had the same thing happen when I lived at yokota air base. I had the opportunity to go to the imperial palace grounds. Unfortunately they were renavating the Emperor's Palace and I didn't get to see the inside. Very disappointed but the grounds were amazing!

The palace in Tokyo or Kyoto? The one is Tokyo is actually always closed to the public and we can just look at it from the outside walls. But even that is pretty nice!
I honestly don't remember. This was back in 1979. My husband was a squadron commander and I got invited to a lot of tours. Guess age does that to you. Lol
