Quebrada de Jaspe, Gran Sabana Tour – Venezuela (Part 4) / ENG-ESP

We picked up our camp near the Veil of the Bride (Velo de la Novia) waterfall, which I showed you in the previous post, and we went to one of the icons of La Gran Sabana, Quebrada de Jaspe (Jaspe Ravine), keep reading so you can see why this place makes such an impression in the people.

Recogimos nuestro campamento cerca del salto Velo de la Novia, el cual les mostré en la publicación anterior y nos fuimos hacia uno de los íconos de La Gran Sabana, la Quebrada de Jaspe, quédense leyendo para que vean por qué este lugar causa tanta impresión en la gente.

Venezuela, with 1,320 cubic kilometers, is on the list of the 10 countries in the world that have the largest reserves of fresh water, and most of it is precisely in the south of the territory, where that water is also flowing through natural scenarios as impressive as this:

Quebrada de Jaspe or Kako Parú, which means in the language of the Pemón indigenous people “The stream of the fire stones” or also “Fire Ravine”, is at Km 273 of the Troncal 10 highway that crosses La Gran Sabana.

La Quebrada de Jaspe o Kako Parú, que significa en lengua de los indígenas pemón “El arroyo de las piedras del fuego” o “Quebrada del Fuego”, está en el Km 273 de la carretera Troncal 10 que atraviesa La Gran Sabana.

We reach a hill where the park ranger's post is, a parking area, handicrafts for sale and a place for those who want to camp. We got out of the Toyotas and the guide pointed out the path that we have to go down to get to the ravine, it is a narrow path between a lot of tall vegetation. I already knew the place, I went a few years before when I made the excursion to the Roraima tepuy, but at that time I hadn't been able to take a dip because it was a quick visit, so this time it was going to be a different experience.

Llegamos a una colina donde está el puesto del guardaparque, un área de estacionamiento, venta de artesanías y sitio para los que quieran acampar. Nos bajamos de los Toyotas y el guía nos indicó la caminería por la que hay que bajar para llegar a la quebrada, es un sendero angosto entre mucha vegetación alta. Ya yo conocía el lugar, fui unos años antes cuando hice la excursión al tepuy Roraima, pero en ese momento no me había podido bañar porque fue una visita rápida, así que esta vez iba a ser una experiencia diferente.

When the path ends, you come across a small but powerful waterfall on one side and on the other a huge reddish rock that extends throughout the river bed: it is red and yellow jasper, a semi-precious stone that is made up of quartz and silica. In addition, all of this is surrounded by a gallery forest with very tall trees, more than 20 meters high.

Cuando termina el sendero te topas por un lado con una pequeña pero caudalosa cascada y por el otro con una enorme roca rojiza que se extiende por todo el lecho del río: es jaspe rojo y amarillo, una piedra semipreciosa que está compuesta de cuarzo y sílice. Además todo eso está rodeado por un bosque de galería con árboles muy altos, de más de 20 metros.

When we arrived with our group there were already people there, enjoying this natural spa that is part of the eastern sector of the Canaima National Park, located on the Guayanés Massif, one of the oldest geological formations on the planet.

Cuando llegamos con nuestro grupo ya había gente allí, disfrutando de este spa natural que forma parte del sector oriental del Parque Nacional Canaima, ubicado sobre el Macizo Guayanés, una de las formaciones geológicas más antiguas del planeta.

We immediately put our things in one place and jumped into the waterfall, it was cold!... like almost all the rivers and waterfalls here, but it didn't matter.

Inmediatamente dejamos nuestras cosas en un lugar y nos metimos en la cascada, ¡estaba fría!... como casi todos los ríos y cascadas aquí, pero no importó.

Then we walk on the jasper slab in the direction of the water, it's shallow, it barely covers the sole of your foot, according to what I investigated this surface is more than 300 meters long.

Después caminamos sobre la laja de jaspe en dirección del agua, tiene poca profundidad, apenas te cubre la planta del pie, según investigué esta superficie mide más de 300 metros de largo.

Many people, both adults and children, taking advantage of the fact that this slab is slippery, use it as if it were a slide, throwing themselves down it to see how far they can go. With my sister, what we did was take several photos of ourselves over the beautiful jasper.

Muchas personas, tanto adultos como niños, aprovechando que esta laja es resbaladiza, la usan como si fuera un tobogán, se deslizan por ella a ver hasta dónde llegan. Con mi hermana, lo que hicimos fue tomarnos varias fotos sobre el bellísimo jaspe.

_{The word jasper comes from the Greek "iaspis", its meaning is stained stone. This place was declared a National Monument of Venezuela and the National Institute of Parks (Inparques) is in charge of protecting it, keeping its areas clean and VERY IMPORTANT: warning visitors that it is forbidden to break the rocks to take them away. Unfortunately, there are always people like this, who are looking for "souvenirs" and don't care about damaging a natural site as spectacular as this one, they don't realize that jasper will never shine in their homes as it does there in combination with water and sun.

Este lugar fue declarado como Monumento Nacional de Venezuela y el Instituto Nacional de Parques (Inparques) se encarga de resguardarlo, mantener sus áreas limpias y MUY IMPORTANTE: advertir a los visitantes que está prohibido romper las rocas para llevárselas. Siempre hay gente así lamentablemente, que busca “recuerdos” o “souvenirs” y no les importa dañar un sitio natural tan espectacular como este, no se dan cuenta que el jaspe jamás brillará en sus casas como lo hace allí en combinación con el agua y el sol.

Our tour through Quebrada de Jaspe ended at noon, the guide told us that we had to go back up the path to the parking area and while we waited for the whole group, eating something, a little friend appeared to keep us company for a while and receive a bite, look how precious:

Nuestro paseo por la Quebrada de Jaspe terminó al mediodía, el guía nos avisó que ya debíamos ir subiendo de regreso por el sendero hacia el área de estacionamiento y mientras esperábamos a todo el grupo comiendo algo, un amiguito apareció para hacernos compañía un rato y recibir algún bocado, miren qué precioso:
