Climbing the Rucu Pichincha volcano, a somewhat improvised adventure that turned out to be perfect - The Ecuador diary 🚶 🌋 Subiendo al volcán Rucu Pichincha, una aventura algo improvisada que resultó perfecta - El diario de Ecuador

It was my fourth day in Quito and I already felt acclimatised to its 2,850 metres. Fortunately, the only symptom I had from the altitude was some insomnia during the first two nights, so I decided it was time to go on an excursion that I had marked on my travel itinerary: climbing the Rucu Pichincha volcano.

Era mi cuarto día en Quito y ya me sentía aclimatada a sus 2.850 metros. Afortunadamente, el único síntoma que tuve por la altura fue algo de insomnio las dos primeras noches, así que me pareció que era el momento de hacer una excursión que tenía marcada en mi itinerario de viaje: subir al volcán Rucu Pichincha.

To do this route, you had to go to the cable car, and when you go up, there is a path to reach the top. I had mentioned my plan to Vero, the Argentine girl I met at the hostel where I was staying and with whom I went on several walks, and she liked the idea. Her boyfriend, who had arrived the night before, also joined the adventure.

Para hacer esta ruta había que ir al teleférico, y al subir, hay un sendero para llegar a la cima. Le había comentado mi plan a Vero, la chica argentina que conocí en el hostal donde me estaba quedando y con la que hice varios paseos, y le gustó la idea. Su novio, que había llegado la noche anterior, también se unió a la aventura.

We arrived at the cable car at 10:00 in the morning. It was Monday and there weren't many people, so we didn't have to queue to buy tickets or get on the cabins. The journey isn't very long, it's 2.5 km along the slopes of the volcano, which takes less than 20 minutes.

Llegamos al teleférico a las 10:00 de la mañana. Era lunes y había poca gente, así que no tuvimos que hacer cola para comprar los tickets ni para montarnos en las cabinas. El trayecto no es muy largo, son 2,5 km por las laderas del volcán que se recorren en menos de 20 minutos.

As soon as we took off, we began to enjoy spectacular views of Quito. The morning was quite clear, sunny, but as we climbed, it started to feel a bit cold.

Apenas nos elevamos, comenzamos a disfrutar de unas vistas espectaculares de Quito. La mañana estaba bastante despejada, había sol, pero a medida que ascendíamos, se sentía algo de frío.

And it makes sense, we start at an altitude of 3,117 metres above sea level, and when we reach Cruz Loma station, we reach 4,100 metres.

Y es lógico, partimos de una altura de 3.117 metros sobre el nivel del mar, y al llegar a la estación de Cruz Loma, tocamos los 4.100 metros.

There are many recreational options there, such as hiking, horse riding, paragliding, among others. As we already had a plan, we only stayed a few minutes to look around and immediately followed the signs to begin the route to the summit of the Rucu Pichincha volcano, which reaches 4,696 metres.

Hay muchas opciones recreativas allí, como senderismo, paseos a caballo, parapente, entre otras. Como nosotros ya teníamos un plan, nos quedamos sólo unos minutos viendo los alrededores e inmediatamente seguimos los letreros para comenzar la ruta hacia la cima del volcán Rucu Pichincha, que alcanza los 4.696 metros.

Of course, I was super excited to do this route, but the truth is that I had barely read any information about what it was like. I preferred the surprise 😄. The travel guide I had said that the walk was about three hours long, without giving many details about the terrain conditions. We set off and were immediately captivated by the scenery.

Por supuesto estaba súper emocionada de hacer esta ruta, pero la verdad es que apenas había leído información sobre cómo era. Preferí la sorpresa 😄. La guía de viaje que tenía decía que la caminata era de unas tres horas, sin dar muchos detalles sobre las condiciones del terreno. Comenzamos y los paisajes nos cautivaron inmediatamente.

The cold was starting to bite a little more around here. Fortunately, I had suitable clothing and my new boots, which I had bought shortly before travelling to Ecuador. As for provisions, I had a packet of biscuits, but for some reason I hadn't brought enough water, just half a litre. Well, since I didn't pay attention to this, I would have to ration it...

El frío se empezaba a sentir un poco más por aquí. Afortunadamente tenía ropa adecuada y mis botas nuevas, que las compré poco antes de viajar a Ecuador. En cuanto a provisiones, tenía un paquete de galletas, pero no sé por qué no llevé suficiente agua, apenas medio litro. Bueno, por no haber prestado atención a esto, tendría que racionarla...

Everything was going well, the climb wasn't too steep yet, and every now and then we took off our jackets because we were getting hot.

Todo iba bien, la subida aún no era muy empinada, y de vez en cuando, nos quitábamos las chaquetas porque empezábamos a tener calor.

After walking for about 40 minutes, Vero and her boyfriend began to feel very tired and short of breath. They sat down for a while to see if it would pass, but it didn't, so they told me they weren't going to continue and would rather turn back. I thought it was the best decision. In those conditions, it's better not to push our body too hard; altitude affects people in different ways.

Cuando llevábamos unos 40 minutos caminando, Vero y su novio comenzaron a sentirse muy cansados y con falta de aire. Se sentaron un rato para ver si se les pasaba, pero no fue así, así que me dijeron que no iban a seguir, que preferían regresar. Me pareció la mejor decisión. En esas condiciones es mejor no forzar nuestro cuerpo; la altura afecta de formas diferentes a la gente.

I also had to make a decision, as I would be doing the route alone. My goal was to reach the summit, so of course I chose to continue. I wasn't at all discouraged by going without company, and besides, the trail was marked, so I wasn't going to get lost.

Yo también tenía que tomar una decisión, ya que haría la ruta sola. Mi objetivo era llegar a esa cima, y claro que opté por continuar. No me desanima en absoluto ir sin compañía, y además, el sendero estaba señalizado, no me iba a perder.

We said goodbye and I continued on my way. A few metres later, the weather changed, the sky clouded over. I just hoped it wouldn't rain because I didn't have a raincoat. You see, apart from not bringing enough water, I hadn't thought about that either.

Nos despedimos y continué mi camino. Unos metros más adelante el clima cambió, el cielo se nubló. Yo sólo esperaba que no lloviera, porque no tenía impermeable. Ya ven, aparte de no llevar suficiente agua, tampoco pensé en eso.

I couldn't see anyone in front of me or behind me. I assumed it was because I had started this trek a little late, at 10:30 in the morning. I thought I would surely catch up with the people who had left earlier as I progressed further, or would there be no one? 😆

No veía a nadie delante ni detrás de mí. Supuse que era porque comencé este trekking algo tarde, a las 10:30 de la mañana. Pensé que seguramente alcanzaría a las personas que habían salido antes a medida que avanzara, ¿o no habría nadie? 😆

Well, to be honest, that didn't worry me. The scenery around me was so fantastic that I couldn't stop taking photos. I wanted to be in some of them too, so as I didn't have a tripod, I placed the camera on the ground, activated the self-timer and experimented a little.

Bueno, la verdad eso no me preocupaba. El paisaje a mi alrededor era tan fantástico que no paré de tomar fotos. También quería salir en algunas de ellas, así que como no tenía un trípode, coloqué la cámara en el suelo, activé el disparador automático y experimenté un poco.

This inactive volcano, the closest to the city of Quito, is part of the Pichinchas Massif. Apart from Rucu Pichincha, there is also Guagua Pichincha, which is slightly higher at 4,776 metres and is active. In the Quechua language, Rucu means old and Guagua means child or baby.

Este volcán inactivo, el más cercano a la ciudad de Quito, forma parte del Macizo de los Pichinchas. Aparte del Rucu Pichincha, está también el Guagua Pichincha, que es un poco más alto, 4.776 metros, y si está activo. En lengua quechua, "Rucu" significa viejo y "Guagua", niño o bebé.

Thousands of years of eruptions and erosion by ancient glaciers have resulted in this exotic landscape, with pointed rocky peaks, sandy soil and unique vegetation.

Miles de años de erupciones y erosión por antiguos glaciares, han dado como resultado este paisaje exótico, con picos rocosos puntiagudos, suelo arenoso y una particular vegetación.

The path led me further on to a part that seemed quite surreal to me. A narrow path surrounded by taller plants, many dark rock formations, and a kind of grass, bright green in colour, covering some surfaces.

El sendero me llevó más adelante a una parte que me pareció bastante surrealista. Un camino estrecho rodeado de plantas más altas, muchas formaciones rocosas oscuras y una especie de pasto, de color verde intenso, que cubría algunas superficies.

Here I felt like Alice in Wonderland, but I didn't see any rabbits 😄, just increasingly strange rocks.

Aquí me sentí como Alicia en el País de las Maravillas, pero no vi ningún conejo 😄, sólo rocas cada vez más extrañas.

Fortunately, the sky cleared up and it didn't rain, otherwise this landscape would look rather frightening, don't you think?

Afortunadamente, el cielo se despejó y no llovió, de lo contrario este paisaje se vería algo aterrador, ¿no creen?

I had already been walking for just over two hours, I was supposed to be close to reaching the summit, taking into account the travel guide, which said it was about 3 hours.

Ya llevaba poco más de dos horas caminando, se suponía que no me faltaba mucho para hacer cumbre, tomando en cuenta la guía de viaje, que decía que eran unas 3 horas.

The path became much steeper, and the ground more slippery because it was sandier, so I took each step carefully. It was at this point that I met some people, some going up and others coming down.

El sendero se volvió mucho más empinado y el suelo más resbaladizo porque era más arenoso, así que iba dando cada paso con cuidado. Fue en este punto que me encontré con algunas personas, algunas iban subiendo y otras bajando.

After passing that rocky path you see in the photo, you reach a part where you feel like you're walking on quicksand, but it wasn't sand, it was tiny pebbles and my boots sank with every step. I drank some water because the physical effort was intense, and I continued climbing, slowly but without pause.

Al pasar ese caminito rocoso que se ve en la foto, llegas a una parte donde te sientes como en arenas movedizas, pero no era arena, eran micro piedritas y las botas se me hundían a cada paso. Tomé un poco de agua porque el esfuerzo físico estaba siendo grande, y continué subiendo, lentamente pero sin pausa.

Half an hour later, I began to see what appeared to be the summit of Rucu Pichincha. I asked someone who was coming down and he told me that I wasn't far from reaching the top. Keep going!

Una media hora después, empecé a ver lo que parecía ser la cima del Rucu Pichincha. Le pregunté a alguien que venía bajando y me dijo que no me faltaba mucho para llegar. ¡Ánimo!

I stopped for a couple of minutes to rest and, above all, to take photos of the panorama, which offered truly incredible views. It was cold, but I didn't feel it so much because the climb had warmed me up.

Me detuve un par de minutos para descansar, y sobre todo para tomar fotos del panorama, que ofrecía unas vistas realmente increíbles. Hacía frío, pero no lo sentía tanto porque la subida me había calentado.

I finally reached the last part of the climb, and all I could see were black rocks everywhere.

Finalmente llegué a la última parte del ascenso, y lo que se veía eran rocas negras por todos lados.

I walked along a narrow path and then had to climb up the rock. There were no ropes or anything to hold on to, so I concentrated on not taking a wrong step and, using my hands and feet, I moved forward little by little.

Caminé por un angosto sendero y luego lo que venía era escalar por la roca. No había cuerdas ni nada para agarrarse, así que concentrada en no dar un paso en falso, y usando manos y pies, fui avanzando poco a poco.

When I reached a stable spot, I stopped to observe the magnificent volcanic landscape. Another world!

Cuando alcancé un lugar estable, me detuve a observar el grandioso paisaje volcánico. ¡Otro mundo!

A few minutes later, I reached the summit, and I was so happy that I started jumping around when I saw the sign, and I even fell over 😂. Fortunately, it wasn't down a ravine, and I was fine. There were about five people there, and of course I asked one of them to take a photo of me.

Pocos minutos después hice cumbre, y mi felicidad fue tan grande que me puse a brincar al ver el letrero, y hasta me caí 😂. Por suerte, no fue por un barranco y no me pasó nada. Allí había como cinco personas, y por supuesto le pedí a una de ellas que me tomara una foto.

I sat down on the ground to rest, eat my biscuits and drink some water. I had very little left and had to save some hydration for the return journey. I looked at my watch and it was 2:30 in the afternoon, so it took me exactly four hours to reach the summit.

Me senté en el suelo a descansar, comerme mis galletas y beber agua. Me quedaba muy poca y tenía que reservar algo de hidratación para el regreso. Miré el reloj y eran las 2:30 de la tarde, así que llegar a la cumbre me tomó justo 4 horas.

The peace I felt up there is indescribable. As I gazed and breathed deeply, a little bird approached me, wanting some of my biscuit 😊.

La paz que sentí allí arriba es indescriptible. Mientras contemplaba y respiraba profundamente, un pajarito se me acercó, quería un poco de mi galleta 😊.

I stayed there for about half an hour, then everyone started to descend and I did the same because I didn't want to be late. When I reached the rocky part, the most difficult part of the climb, I had trouble getting down. I was going to go down facing forward, but I couldn't find anywhere to put my feet, so I stood there paralysed for a while. A guy who had already passed that section and saw me hesitating below signalled to me, asking if I needed help. Yes, please! I shouted. He came back and told me that it was a mistake to go down facing forwards, I had to do it backwards. So I turned around, he showed me where to put my feet to go down, and that's how I managed it. I thanked him very much for his timely help!

Estuve como media hora allí, luego todos fueron bajando y yo hice lo mismo porque no quería que se me hiciera tarde. Cuando llegué a la parte rocosa, la más difícil de este ascenso, tuve problemas para bajar. Yo iba a bajarla de frente, pero no hallaba donde poner los pies, me quedé paralizada un rato. Un chico que ya había pasado ese tramo y me vio desde abajo dudando, me hizo señas, que si necesitaba ayuda. ¡Sí, por favor! Le grité. Se devolvió y me dijo que era un error bajar de frente, había que hacerlo de espaldas. Así que me giré, él me indicó dónde colocar los pies para ir bajando y así fue que pude, ¡le agradecí muchísimo su oportuna ayuda!

The rest of the way back was quiet. I took it easy because I knew it would take less time than the climb up. Later, I found out that this route is about 10 kilometres round trip.

El resto del camino de regreso estuvo tranquilo, iba a ritmo relajado porque sabía que me tomaría menos tiempo que la subida. Luego supe que en total, esta ruta es de unos 10 km ida y vuelta.

Almost arriving at the cable car station, I came across a dog running in front of some people riding horses, the typical guide dog 😊.

Casi llegando a la estación del teleférico, me topé con un perro que venía corriendo delante de unas personas que paseaban a caballo, el típico perro guía 😊.

Shortly before 5:00 in the afternoon, I finished my excursion, which took me about six and a half hours in total. It was somewhat improvised, it's true, but I trusted my physical abilities and fortunately everything turned out perfectly.

Poco antes de las 5:00 de la tarde terminé mi excursión, en total me tomó unas 6 horas y media. Fue algo improvisada, es verdad, pero confié en mi capacidad física y afortunadamente todo resultó perfecto.
