On my second day in the Enchanted Islands, as the Galapagos Islands are also known, my plan was to visit one of its beaches, the most famous one on Santa Cruz Island, where I was staying. As I was on a tight budget, I had marked the free places to visit in Puerto Ayora and its surroundings in my travel guide, and Tortuga Bay was one of them.
I got up early, had breakfast, and headed to the main pier. I had seen on the map that the trail started nearby, and the beach wasn't far away, only 2.5 km from Puerto Ayora. As soon as you start the hike, you see the rocks that characterize volcanic landscapes, a forest of cacti, and endemic vegetation.
You must register at the park ranger station and be aware of the regulations. As this is a protected area, nothing is sold there, and there are no shops on the beach, so you must bring your own water and food.
The initial trail is paved, but when you reach the shore, at the first beach called Playa Brava (Rough Beach), the route continues along the sand.
The day was cloudy, so the landscape of this white sand beach, rough waters, and black rocks looked somewhat wild.
In Tortuga Bay, where there is an area of small dunes, green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) lay their eggs. There are signs and markings to keep people away from the area.
Playa Brava, the main beach in Bahía Tortuga, is not suitable for swimming as it is open to the ocean and has strong currents. However, it is ideal for walking and observing nature, is quite long, measuring over a kilometer.
A few drops were falling as I walked and took pictures, and my camera lens got a little wet, but I didn't notice. I took pictures of this bird that appeared there, and look, you can see the spots in the image.
As it was early, there were few people on the trail, so I could observe the beauty of the surroundings in peace. The sky was gradually clearing, and with the sun's rays, the water appeared in different shades of blue.

Suddenly, the charismatic marine iguanas appeared, one of the most famous animals in the Galapagos Islands. I had seen them the day before, on my first walk through Puerto Ayora, but here they were more at ease.
These lizards, endemic to these islands, are the only marine iguanas in the world. They are herbivorous and feed on seaweed and some coastal plants.
Some people were scared of them, but I was fascinated, so I took lots of photos of them.
Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish them when they are close to or on top of the black rocks on the beach.
Look at that fabulous punk mohawk! 😃
¡Miren esa fabulosa cresta punk! 😃
I kept walking and found myself in a forest of cacti. Everything seemed unreal. The ground was also very unusual, like marine debris.
The iguanas were still everywhere. Several of them were walking toward the beach, and I strayed from the path for a while to follow them. I became a fan! 😄
They are quite fast, especially when they are about to reach the water. And watching them dive is great fun.
After walking for just over an hour, I reached the second beach in Tortuga Bay: Playa Mansa (Calm Beach).
Swimming is permitted at this beach. The waters are very calm and clear, and that's why you can also go snorkeling.
I looked for a spot under the shade of the trees, left my things there, and immediately went to dive into this beautiful beach. It was my first time swimming in the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

When I got out of the water, I was hungry, so I sat down to eat some sweet breads I had brought with me. As soon as I took them out of my backpack, I was surrounded by a group of restless little birds.
I had read that the wildlife on the Galapagos Islands was not afraid of people, but I never imagined that even the birds weren't afraid of us. I had never experienced anything like it.
These bold little birds are Darwin's finches. They are endemic land birds, of which there are about 18 species. They are named after the English naturalist who studied them when he visited these islands in 1835.
He observed that there were small birds on the islands that looked alike, except for their beaks. According to his theory, their beaks had adapted depending on the food they found on each island.
As you can see in the photo below, food was a source of conflict among those around me 😆. The rules at this place prohibit feeding the animals, and it wasn't my intention to do so, but the finches don't respect the rules and almost took the bread crumbs out of my hands 😂.
When I ran out of food, they calmed down. I stayed for a while sunbathing, then walked along the beach and saw that kayaks were available for rent. I asked, and it cost $10 for an hour, which I thought was a good price.
I really enjoy kayaking; paddling through calm waters is very peaceful. I put on my life jacket and set off to explore 😊.
Hacer kayak me gusta mucho; remar por aguas tranquilas da mucha paz. Me puse el salvavidas y a explorar 😊.
I saw a turtle swimming near me, although I didn't have time to photograph it, and I also saw a small shark near the mangroves.
On my way back, I stayed a little longer swimming at the beach, and at around 5:00 p.m. I returned to Puerto Ayora, happy to have had this experience.
