Honestly I am not that into the ocean when we were in the state, but for some reasons I always came back to Malibu beach here and there during the year. So today, let's take a break from our Vietnam trip and go back in time to visit our favorite beach of Dorchester!
Where is it?
Everytime I went to Dorchester to see my grandparents, I even went to Malibu beach before came over their house. It is really close to UMass Boston, and lots of people come here for the weekend getaway with tons of activities like picnic, kayaking, playing sports or just laying on the sand to tan.
What to do at Malibu beach?
I personally just do not do anything much beside touching the water for a bit then go right back to the beach because I did not know how to swim at that time. Since the beach here is not sandy compare to its neighbor, most people might only consider it as a spot to hang out with friends and family, not for swimming. But for a person who could not swim, I sounds perfect to me, even I do not think it is a real real beach.
Watching sunset of the summer on Malibu beach
Burning sunset in Malibu
Reeds were growing crazily on the side of the beach
The summer might be the most ideal time for people to spend time on Malibu beach. I usually sit and wait for the sunset at this beach at 4 in the afternoon and honestly just come here around this time. There are so many tourists and also locals come here for the reeds along the side of the beach. I usually just come here alone, sit still and watch someone. Of course, I also took a few pictures but just for fun. Sometimes if you are there at the right time, you will see planes in the sky at quite close distance.
After I read the book of a Japanese author named "The healing power of Sea Water", I tried to go to the ocean even more than ever. I believed that the frequency of the ocean waves will give you peace of mind, the salt in sea water will heal any pain if you just dive into it. It works out for me all the time.
Daytime on Malibu beach of a regular day, not too many people
The snow season on Malibu beach
I was so shocked the first time I saw people jumping into the cold water of snow season in Dorchester. Even though I admire them, I never have the brave to do it.
Since winter is the most quite time of the year over here, no matter how far is it from home to this place, I was happy driving about 14 miles just to come to Malibu beach and doing nothing. It is impossible for me to count how many time I stopped by this beach on the going visit my grandparents, but it would never below 20 times.
My grandma always does not understand why I visited them much more in winter, and they will never know it is because I like walking on the ice at the beach.
Caught our buddy looking confused when no one is in the area
The whole beach is cover by a thick layer of ice
When winter comes I change my hour of visiting Malibu beach because I think it is better in daytime rather than sunset. It feel so magically retreating just lazily sitting there and breathe in the cold air of a sunny morning.
As I stayed in Vietnam long enough, thing that I missed the most about the US is snow. I remember when i first moved to Vietnam, I literally sweating every single day. I was struggling to adapt to the weather and nature of Vietnam for a while because it is impossible to find a place that cold and windy like home.
Trees along the side of the beach lost all their green lives in winter.
I used to ask myself what place I should visit first the first day when I'm back to the state, but now I am sure that Malibu beach of Dorchester will definitely the one. One day when you are Boston, do not forget to check it out.

OMG the burning sunset photo. I used to see the similar ones when I lived in Vietnam. But I don't remember seeing the same in New Zealand. We don't have that hue colour over here
I think it has to do with humidity? Vietnam does get it much more frequently than I can remember from the States. Vietnam is definitely Humid as heck always! We live for these gorgeous sunsets here in VN haha.
