Prague is for cycling #1

Hey guys, for those who don’t know me — I’m @rollie1212. I currently live in Prague, Czech Republic, trying to enjoy my immigrant life with my family to the fullest.

Last year, I bought a bicycle and started exploring cycling routes around Prague with my fren.

Turns out the bike was bigger than I expected, and since we’re renting a pretty small apartment (rents in Prague are insane), I had to find extra space for it. Luckily, a friend of ours let us store our bikes at his bar — he has a second hall that he isn’t using!

So, my first cycling adventure started from Žižkov — Sladkovského náměstí:

I rode all the way to Podbaba to grab a Svijany beer at a small, cheap plastic bar near the river:

The best part about this route is that you ride almost the entire way along the river, passing through places you’d probably never walk through as a pedestrian.

The ride goes through the historic Žižkov district, continues through the 370+ meter long Karlín Tunnel, then Karlín itself, across the Troja Bridge, and finishes with a nice 1km gravel stretch. In total, it’s about 10 km and takes around an hour at an easy pace.

Since this route is great for beginners — and I already had plenty of cycling experience back in my hometown of Kyiv — we decided to make it longer and more interesting. So instead of stopping at Podbaba, we extended the ride all the way to the village of Řež. The full route is around 40 km, and once again, most of it follows the river.

Řež is a small village in the Prague-East district, known for having a nuclear research reactor. Lol. That might explain why we met a guy from Kharkiv there who’s been living in the village for more than 30 years. His Czech was incredible, by the way.

Another cool surprise was a beer bar with a perfect view of a football field, where a local team plays in the 10th league of Czech football. Beer here is way cheaper than in Prague — and honestly, the quality is just as good. Definitely worth a visit.

40 km is a decent distance, so if we feel tired — and we usually do — we just take a train back to Prague, then ride the last 2–3 km to drop the bikes off and relax at the bar.

More to come!

Long time no see. What have you been upto?
I wonder how the Cycling infrastructure in the Czech Republic is. Are cyclists very common over there?

Cycling and take a train back, I haven't done that before, but it does extend your range.

the infrastructure is amazing, I’d say cycling and beer is a national sport) I’m pretty fine, living my family live.

In the Czech Republic, there are a few nice places where you can travel on special bicycle trains. All other trains have only a few spaces for bikes.
bicycle trains for year 2025

Families living in towns use cars with bike racks. It’s cheaper than buying train tickets for the whole family and more comfortable. They can go wherever they want and don’t have to keep an eye on the timetable.

Alcohol (and even drugs) is a problem when the police check cyclists. A cyclist can receive a fine of up to 50,000 CZK. That can be equivalent to one or two months’ salary for someone. If an accident happens, the costs are even higher for the cyclist.

all true, but still as I see from myself, lots of cyclists drinking some beers while having a rest on a route)
