After completing my first semester external exams, I decided to visit the National Gallery of Modern Art today situated at Jaipur House in New Delhi, which is under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It is renowned for its modern art, canvas paintings, architectural marvels, and ancient sculptures.
As soon as we entered the gate, we were greeted by a beautiful lawn where I first saw a grey sculpture. Moving forward, I found many other white, greyish, and black stone-like sculptures. The variety of sculptures was impressive, and it set the tone for what was to come.
We then entered Jaipur House, where we embarked on a tour of modern art. The stone crafts were exquisite, and I was amazed to see gold coins worth lakhs in INR and heavy gold chains and bangles worth crores in INR displayed in the gallery. Security guards were stationed at the gates of each room, emphasizing the value and importance of these items. These artifacts were showcased during the G20 meeting, but they were soon to be removed for security reasons.
The moment I entered the gallery, I was captivated by the aura and the craftsmanship of the ancient paintings. I was stunned by the intricate designs and details. Although I am not a big fan of art and have never been creative enough to fully understand masterpieces, I wanted to capture every single piece as I moved from one room to another, up the stairs, and onto the next floor.
Unexpectedly, the impact it had on me was profound, and I felt a deep appreciation for the artists and their work displayed in the gallery. It was evident that a tremendous amount of effort had been put into curating this collection. However, I soon realized again when entering the New Wing 2009 that I wouldn't be able to capture any photographs or videos inside the gallery due to copyright issues.
Despite this limitation, I continued my exploration and found a souvenir shop filled with art-related items such as mugs, wall paintings, books, brushes, and bags. The canvas paintings of beautiful sceneries and ancient sketches were particularly captivating, and I wanted to bring some of them home with me.
Afterwards, we stepped out into the lawn area where I saw a banyan tree made up of stainless steel, with buckets serving as leaves. It was a stunning sight, especially in the afternoon light. Whether you are an art enthusiast like my brother or someone like me who has no prior knowledge of art but enjoys exploring and learning new things, the National Gallery of Modern Art is a must-visit.
Art is a blend of beauty, and it’s appreciation lies in the eyes of the beholder. If you can connect with it, you will undoubtedly love this place.
