Belgrade is a city which brings back a long history of empires. A city so vibrant yet so old and beautiful in its own way. It has its own way attracting and leaving its footprint on a visitors mind. The architecture, the vibrance and the friendliness of people is more than you will ever expect.
It was the Workers day. I went out with a friend and my camera and we decided to visit the center of the city, the Belgrade fortress and walk by the river. So, we got into the bus and it took us to the center. You can easily identify that its the center of the city as you can see these big monument of horse and i suppose a army general riding on it. and pointing his finger towards something. I guess he was pointing his finger towards the enemy and behind it is the public museum. It was a wonderful and sunny day after a cold winter and people were out. The street were busy although nothing was working except the coffeshops.
I love these streets as it reminds me of Istanbul in narrowness and this part of Belgrade was under the Ottoman empires. So, I guess that make sense.
Belgrade is full of beautiful architecture specially the center of the city. There are so much sculptures and so beautiful. It reminds us of the rich pass history. You just look up and see with your heart and feel the old times. Its like you are in a Museum.
When I walk on the street i mostly look up in Belgrade rather looking front. Your eyes will find its way to amazing people around. Someone showing magic, old people play chess and argue like kids and the same time people sell book, paintings. I found this guy reading a book with so much focus and attention.
When you walk the end of the road you cross a signal and you enter into Belgrade fortress. This fortess has been standing therefor centuries. The roman have been there, the Turkish have been there. It's a a fortress which has lot of history of wind, defeat, pain and sorrows. In the middle there lies the monument of the winner (Pobednik). It was a gift from France to Serbia.
As it was the workers day. So, people came out to celebrate, take rest and hang out with there family. So, the fortress was full of people. Enjoying there time, music and wine. Serbia knows to celebrate.
There is always some photo exhibition in here and I saw some people were enjoying it. The nature is beautiful as well. The fortress is very high and it was used to look after the movement in the river. Once thiis river separated two bigger empires.
There is way though to go down and find yourself near the river side and enjoy there. For us we explored the whole place. I heard there is lavirint under the Belgrade fortress. The gate to enter in the fortress is so beautiful. It was may be made by the romans, then repaired by the Ottomans. I love the way these old waltl stand for centuries.
If you look at the river you will see two rivers are merging together. This is the place where the river Sava and Danube meets. The whole fortress has so many layers and so many gates. You can find zoo nearby, a beautiful coffee shops as well, above all antient history.
You can see how steep the fortress is and the old canals builds around to make it impenetrable. I f you walk a little bit more you will see and antient church and a museum. SO many people come to visit this medieval church. There is these two soldiers and the Latin written on the museum gives you the feel of that period.
You can see some ruins there and the Astronomical observatory. I hold a public lecture over there as I am an astrophysicist. The environment is quite awesome there. I would love people who are interested in astronomy to visit there.
It was an awesome day for me and a day well spent. I hope this post will make you interested for visiting Belgrade. Until next time enjoy.
