Journey to tungnath: Exploring The Highest Shiva Temple in the world.

Sometimes, the most spontaneous trips turn out to be the most memorable. Recently, my friend and I decided to embark on an exciting bike trip to Tungnath, which happens to be the highest Shiva temple in the world. Situated in the Chamoli district, this sacred spot had long been on our travel bucket list. Little did we know, this trip would turn out to be one of the most thrilling and peaceful experiences of our lives.

The Ride Begins:
We started our journey from Almora on a bright Saturday morning. After a hearty breakfast, we hit the road at around 10 AM, the excitement building with every kilometer. Our first stop was Baijnath, where we sipped on some warm tea to keep us energized for the long ride ahead. From there, we headed towards Gwaldam, a quaint town with stunning scenery, where we stopped for lunch.

The road to Tungnath is about 250 km, and after hours of riding, we made another stop at Karnprayag. The view here was simply mesmerizing—the junction of the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers merging into one powerful flow was a sight to behold. We clicked several photos, soaking in the beauty before continuing on our way.
Resting at Gopeshwar:
As evening set in, we arrived at Gopeshwar around 6 PM. Tired from the day's ride, we rented a room at a local hotel, grabbed dinner, and settled in for the night. The excitement for the next day kept us awake longer than we had planned, but eventually, we dozed off.

Trekking to Tungnath and the Temple’s Significance
:
The next morning, we were up at 6 AM, ready for the trek to Tungnath. After completing our morning routines, we began the 3 km trek at 7 AM. The trail, lined with scenic mountain views and lush greenery, is a spiritual journey in itself, and after about an hour, we reached the temple.

Tungnath Temple is a remarkable place. Located at an altitude of 3,680 meters, it is the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The history of Tungnath is rooted in ancient Hindu mythology, with legends stating that the Pandavas built this temple to atone for their sins after the Kurukshetra war. The temple’s architecture, built entirely from stone, reflects traditional Himalayan style, with its distinctively modest yet majestic appearance.

The main deity here is Lord Shiva in the form of an arm (Bahulinga), believed to be one of the parts of his body that surfaced here when he took the form of a bull and disappeared into the ground. Standing in the temple, surrounded by towering peaks, you can feel the immense spiritual energy that has drawn pilgrims to this site for centuries.

After offering our prayers and walking around the temple, we took a moment to sit down and meditate. The tranquility of the temple, coupled with the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, made it an unreal experience—one that left us deeply moved and spiritually fulfilled.

Exploring Chandrashila:
After spending some time at the temple, we couldn’t resist heading to Chandrashila, which is just 1 km from Tungnath. The 15-minute walk was short but filled with anticipation. When we finally reached Chandrashila, we were greeted by breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The small, ancient temple there added to the charm of the place. We spent quality time soaking in the scenery, clicked photos, and just enjoyed the tranquility of the spot.

Heading Back:

As much as we didn’t want to leave, we began our journey back, stopping at several scenic spots along the way to capture more photos and memories. By the time we reached Gwaldam again, we were completely exhausted, so we decided to stay there for the night. The next morning, feeling refreshed, we made our way back to Almora, wrapping up a trip that was nothing short of magical.

Final Thoughts:
Our journey to Tungnath and Chandrashila was a perfect mix of adventure, spirituality, and natural beauty. The stunning views, peaceful atmosphere, and the thrill of the trek made it an experience we will cherish forever. If you’re ever in the area, this trip is a must-do for anyone who loves both nature and spirituality!
