Visit Portugal - Filigrana Walkway in Gondomar

Every morning, I find peace in my early walks, but there's something special about autumn in this place. The crisp air, the golden leaves and the serene Douro River create the perfect atmosphere for reflection.

As the sun barely kissed the horizon, I found myself lacing up my running shoes, ready for another early morning walk. It had become a part of my routine getting out just as the world was waking up, when the air was still fresh and the streets were quiet. Today my path led me once again to the scenic Filigrana Walkway in Gondomar, a place that has slowly become one of my favourite spots in the Porto region.

Enquanto o sol mal beijava o horizonte, dei por mim a atar os ténis de corrida, pronto para mais uma caminhada matinal. Tornou-se parte da minha rotina sair no momento em que o mundo estava a acordar, quando o ar ainda estava fresco e as ruas estavam silenciosas. Hoje o meu caminho levou-me mais uma vez ao pitoresco Passadiço da Filigrana em Gondomar, local que se tornou, aos poucos, um dos meus locais de eleição na região do Porto.

It was a typical autumn day, the kind where the sky hangs low with a blanket of clouds, casting everything in a soft, muted light. The air had that crispness unique to this time of year and the ground was starting to be decorated with golden leaves, blown from the trees that line the walkway.

Era um típico dia de Outono, daquele tipo em que o céu está baixo com um manto de nuvens, lançando sobre tudo uma luz suave e silenciosa. O ar tinha aquela frescura única nesta altura do ano e o chão começava a ser decorado com folhas douradas, sopradas das árvores que ladeiam a passadeira.

This was my favourite season for walks the sight of the changing leaves, the cooler temperatures and the quietness that seemed to settle over the riverbanks. There's something peaceful about walking in autumn, like the world is slowly winding down, preparing for the quiet of winter.

Esta era a minha estação preferida para caminhadas, a vista da mudança das folhas, as temperaturas mais amenas e a tranquilidade que parecia instalar-se nas margens do rio. Há algo de pacífico em caminhar no outono, como se o mundo estivesse lentamente a abrandar, preparando-se para a tranquilidade do inverno.

As I made my way onto the walkway, the view of the Douro River greeted me, as it always does. Even on days like this, when the sky was overcast and the water took on a deeper, darker hue, there was something comforting about the scene. The river seemed calm, with only the occasional ripple breaking the surface.

Ao entrar no passadiço, a vista do rio Douro saudou-me, como sempre acontece. Mesmo em dias como este, em que o céu estava nublado e a água adquiria um tom mais profundo e escuro, havia algo de reconfortante na cena. O rio parecia calmo, com apenas ondas ocasionais a romper a superfície.

Along the banks, small boats were moored, gently bobbing up and down in the water. They always caught my attention, these little vessels that seemed to be in no hurry to go anywhere. I often wondered about the stories behind them, who owned them, where they went on sunny days when the river was filled with activity.

Ao longo das margens, pequenos barcos estavam atracados, balançando suavemente para cima e para baixo na água. Sempre me chamaram a atenção, estas pequenas embarcações que pareciam não ter pressa de ir a lado nenhum. Muitas vezes me questionei sobre as histórias por detrás deles, quem os possuía, para onde iam nos dias de sol, quando o rio estava cheio de atividade.

Today, though the riverfront was quiet. The boats remained still, tied to their posts, waiting for a brighter day, much like the one I was having. Despite the slightly gloomy weather, there was a beauty in the stillness. The sky might have been a little darker, the clouds a little heavier, but it gave the whole scene a peaceful, almost contemplative mood.

Hoje, porém, a zona ribeirinha estava tranquila. Os barcos permaneceram imóveis, amarrados aos seus postes, à espera de um dia mais luminoso, muito semelhante ao que eu estava a ter. Apesar do tempo um pouco sombrio, havia beleza na quietude. O céu podia estar um pouco mais escuro, as nuvens um pouco mais carregadas, mas dava a toda a cena um ambiente de paz, quase contemplativo.

The walkway it stretches along the Douro, providing stunning views of the river on one side and the lush greenery of the Porto region on the other. It's a spot I've come to know well, a place where I've run countless times, walked when I needed to clear my head and even stopped just to sit and enjoy the quiet.

O passadiço estende-se ao longo do Douro, proporcionando vistas deslumbrantes sobre o rio, de um lado e sobre o verde luxuriante da região do Porto, do outro. É um local que conheço bem, um local onde já corri inúmeras vezes, caminhei quando precisava de arejar a cabeça e até parei só para me sentar e desfrutar do sossego.

Gondomar and especially this part of Valbom, has become a bit of a haven for me. It's close enough to the city to be convenient but feels miles away from the hustle and bustle. Whenever I feel the need to escape, this is where I come.

Gondomar e especialmente esta parte de Valbom, tornou-se uma espécie de refúgio para mim. É perto o suficiente da cidade para ser conveniente, mas parece estar a quilómetros de distância da agitação. Sempre que sinto necessidade de fugir, é para lá que venho.

As I walked, the soft crunch of leaves beneath my feet reminded me of how much the landscape changes with the seasons. A month ago, the trees were still full, their leaves a vibrant green, but now the ground was covered in a patchwork of yellow, orange and brown.

Enquanto caminhava, o suave estalar das folhas sob os meus pés fazia-me lembrar o quanto a paisagem muda com as estações do ano. Há um mês, as árvores ainda estavam cheias, com folhas de um verde vibrante, mas agora o chão estava coberto por uma manta de retalhos amarela, laranja e castanha.

Autumn in Porto is a slow transformation and I've always loved watching it unfold. The fallen leaves were scattered along the path, collecting in small piles here and there and every once in a while, a gust of wind would send them swirling through the air.

O outono no Porto é uma transformação lenta e sempre adorei vê-la desenrolar-se. As folhas caídas estavam espalhadas ao longo do caminho, acumulando-se em pequenas pilhas aqui e ali e de vez em quando, uma rajada de vento fazia-as rodopiar no ar.

Despite the clouds, the morning wasn't cold. There was a gentle breeze coming off the river, but it was more refreshing than anything else. I pulled my jacket a little tighter as I walked but found myself grateful for the cooler weather.

Apesar das nuvens, a manhã não estava fria. Havia uma brisa suave vinda do rio, mas era mais refrescante do que qualquer outra coisa. Apertei um pouco mais o casaco enquanto caminhava, mas fiquei grato pelo tempo mais frio.

Running here in the summer heat could be challenging, but autumn brought a perfect balance. The cooler air made the walk more comfortable and the slower pace allowed me to take in the surroundings.

Correr aqui no calor do verão pode ser um desafio, mas o outono trouxe um equilíbrio perfeito. O ar mais fresco tornou a caminhada mais confortável e o ritmo mais lento permitiu-me apreciar o ambiente.

Filigree Walkway might not be the most famous spot in Porto, but for me, it's a hidden treasure. It's where I go when I need to think, when I want to run, or when I just want to enjoy the beauty of nature without having to venture too far from the city. Every season brings something new to the landscape.

O Passarela da Filigrana pode não ser o local mais famoso do Porto, mas para mim é um tesouro escondido. É para onde vou quando preciso de pensar, quando quero correr ou quando quero apenas desfrutar das belezas da natureza sem ter de me aventurar muito longe da cidade. Cada estação traz algo de novo à paisagem.
