Is Chiang Mai the best place to retire cheap? Here's a story of when I went there before Covid kicked in.

Wandering around in the old town of Chiang Mai in the early morning I watch the city awake. Old ageless grannies are sweeping out the stoops in front on shops, some roosters are crowing and birds are everywhere. I love mornings here. The sun isn’t blistering hot yet and it’s very peaceful. The beautiful mornings are definitely one the reasons I’d consider Chiang Mai one of the best places to retire cheap.

After wandering around seeing some beautiful temples , I go for breakfast. Normally I’ve been hitting this local street stand restaurant around the corner from my hotel, but I wanted something different today. I decided I would just wander around until I found something.

Today I found a bustling local market which sells everything from live frogs to flip flops . It was immense, a farmers market meets a shopping mall. There were people buying bags of soup and fresh fruits for their day.

For breakfast, I had congee (rice porridge) with pork ,

a skewer of BBQ chicken, something that looked like a Timbit on steroids and some bananas. You could get the congee with a fresh egg in it for 10 cents more! How much did this whole breakfast cost me? The whole thing? $2. It’s at time like these I love being in Thailand.

Pssst, the bananas in the the photo below were 80 cents for all of them! That’s right the whole bunch. There was a sign that said 80 cents, so I figured “Why not?”I didn’t realize it was 80 cents for all of them! (25 thb)

Chiang Mai, Thailand, is a great place for digital nomads, expats and backpackers to explore! If you haven't gone yet. Check it out!
