To fully understand the history of the Mediterranean region, I try to visit places that were home to great civilizations in the past. At certain periods in history, some civilizations coexisted and formed a powerful civilization. The Mediterranean has always been a center of interest, not only for its sea and beautiful coastline, but also for its fertile lands and natural beauty. Ancient cities were established on these fertile lands, especially near lakes or close to the coast. One of these ancient cities is the ancient city of Neapolis, located near the Doyran Monastery.

Akdeniz Bölgesinin tarihini tam olarak anlayabilmek için geçmişte büyük medeniyetlerin ev sahipliği yaptığı yerlerde gezmeye çalışıyorum. Tarihin belirli dönemlerinde bazı medeniyetler aynı anda bir arada yaşamış ve güçlü bir medeniyet oluşturmuşlar. Akdeniz, sadece denizi ve güzel kıyısıyla değil, verimli toprakları ve doğal güzellikleriyle hep ilgi odağı olmuş. Bu verimli topraklarda özellikle göl kıyılarında ya da sahile yakın yerlerde antik kentler kurulmuş. Bu antik kentlerden biri de Doyran Manastırına yakın olan Neapolis Antik Kentidir.

For about a year now, we have been exploring the ancient cities and natural beauties of the Mediterranean coast with our nature-loving friends through a WhatsApp group called “Rotam Doğa.” We gathered on Sunday and set off from Antalya city center at 8:30 a.m. We headed towards the Çakırlar neighborhood in the Konyaaltı district of Antalya. We arrived by car at the village of Doyran, which is part of Çakırlar. Near the village is the Doyran Reservoir. We started walking with our group friends, backpacks on our shoulders, along the dirt road on the upper side of the lake. It took us about 45 minutes to get here. The wide dirt road ahead of us will be a challenging trail, filled with sharp turns, lush green mountains, and high hills.

Yaklaşık bir yıldır doğasever arkadaşlarımızla oluşturduğumuz "Rotam Doğa" adında bir whatsapp grubumuzla Akdeniz kıyılarının antik kentlerini ve doğal güzelliklerini geziyoruz. Pazar günü toplanıp, saat 08.30'da Antalya merkezden yola çıktık. Antalya'nın Konyaaltı ilçesinde yer alan Çakırlar mahallesine doğru ileledik. Çakırlara bağlı olan Doyran köyüne araçlarımızla geldik. Köyün yakınında Doyran Göleti var. Gölün üst tarafında bulunan toprak yoldan grup arkadaşlarımızla sırtımızla çantalarımızla yürümeye başladık. Buraya gelmemiz yaklaşık 45 dakikayı buldu. Önümüzdeki geniş topraklı yol, keskin virajları olan yemyeşil dağları ve yüksek tepeleriyle göz dolduran yorucu bir parkur olacaktır.

As we walked along the trail, immersed in nature, we stopped at the edge of the cliffs and looked down to encounter magnificent natural landscapes. We were moving away from sea level and heading towards the hills. From the hills, Doyran Lake resembled a small pond among the greenery. The high mountains stretching towards the sky created beautiful landscapes together with the white clouds. We organized trips to two important points on this route. One was Doyran Monastery and the other was the Ancient City of Neapolis. These two historical sites diverge at a certain point. We first entered the road to the Ancient City of Neapolis.

Yürüyüş yolunda doğayla iç içe olmamızın yanında, uçurum kenarlarında durup, aşağılara doğru baktığımızda muhteşem doğa manzaraları ile karşılaşıyoruz. Deniz seviyesinden uzaklaşıp tepelere doğru yol alıyorduk. Tepelerden Doyran Göleti, yeşilliklerin arasında küçük bir havuzu andırıyordu. On the road to the ancient city, the wide dirt road gives way to a narrow, rocky path. Pine cones and grasses lie scattered on the ground beneath the pine trees. Large and small rocks at the base of the pine trees, which rise up to the clouds, make walking difficult. We continue steadily along the path, uphill. The ancient city is located at the very top of the mountain. At one point, we walked along a path made entirely of rocks on the edge of a mountain. We even experienced the danger of falling. On these difficult walks, it is the backpack on our backs that protects us from falling. If our feet slip and we fall backwards, our backpack prevents our heads from hitting the ground. On such difficult trails, we definitely shouldn't walk with our hands in our pockets. With sudden movements, we can use our hands to keep ourselves and our bodies balanced. We took breaks every five minutes while climbing to the top. We were all sweating on the exhausting trail. As we climbed higher, the temperature dropped. On the rocky, narrow paths of the city, most of us took out the spare clothes in our backpacks and changed. As we climbed higher, the ruins of the ancient city began to appear. They had tried to mark the route of the ancient city with colored signs on the stones.

Antik kenttin yolunda o geniş topraklı yol yerini dar topraklı taşlı ve patika bir yola bırakıyor. Çam ağaçlarınından düşen kozalaklar ve otlar toprağın üstünde dağınık vaziyette duruyor. Yukarlara çıktıkta antik kentin kalıntıları görülmeye başlamıştı. Antik kenttin rotasını gösteren taşların üzerine renkli işaretlerle göstermeye çalışmışlar.

We reached the highest point of the city. We began to identify historical remains among the piles of fallen stones. Now, walking among the stones and bushes on a high hill, we began to explore the interior of the city. Among the most important remains of the city are the sarcophagus tombs, seen in the form of closed boxes. Various shapes, symbols, and inscriptions are found on some of the tombstones. They probably contain information specific to the people buried in the tombs. My sincere friend and companion Fatih and I are taking the photographs together. Like me, he is a nature lover and one of my most sincere and best friends who is deeply interested in ancient history.

Kentin bulunduğu tepe noktaya ulaştık. Yıkılan taş yığınlarının arasında tarihi kalıntılar belirlemeye başladı. Artık taşların ve çalıların arasında yüksek bir tepede yürüyerek kentin içini gezmeye başladık. Kentin en önemli kalıntı arasında kapalı kutular halinde görülen lahit mezarlarıdır. Most ancient cities in the Mediterranean were generally built near the coast. However, the ancient city of Neapolis found here is located on a fairly high slope. Surrounded by high hills, you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the city from the city. Looking at where the city was built, it is in a difficult-to-reach location. Therefore, we can say that it is a protected area. The only way to get here is by walking along narrow, rocky paths. At the highest points of the city, there are tombs facing the sea.

Akdeniz'deki çoğu antik kentler genellikle deniz kenarına yakın yerlerde kurulmuştur. Ama burada bulunan Neapolis antik kenti oldukça yüksek bir yamacına konumlandırılmış. We are walking among the rocks on a mountainside. Around us are scattered large boulders and ruins. Among these rocks and ruins, grasses, plants, and trees are trying to find a place for themselves. Most of the ruins resemble the architectural features of the Roman and Hellenistic periods. We frequently come across sarcophagus tombs, both open and closed. The city is located on the slope of Mount Kel, rising from the settlement of Doyran. Remains from the Roman and Byzantine periods stand on the mountainside among the grass and trees, with their mysterious stories. Some of the remains have been damaged by large stones rolling down from the top of the mountain. At the very beginning of the summit, the closed sarcophagus tomb inside the arched stone was one of the city's most intact and interesting remains.

Bir dağ yamacında taşların arasında ilerliyoruz. Etrafımızda dağınık halde duran büyük kaya taşları ile kalıntılar var. Bu taş ve kalıntıların arasında kendine yer bulmaya çalışan otlar, bitkiler ve ağaçlar bulunuyor. Kalıntıların çoğu Roma ve Helenistik döneminin mimari özelliklerine benziyorlar. Ağzı açık ve kapalı lahit mezarlarına sıklıkla rastlıyoruz. Kent, Doyran yerleşim merkezinden yükselen Kel Dağı'nın yamacında bulunuyor. We climbed to the highest point of the city, the peak, with just a few friends. The view here was incredible. Climbing over the steep rock like lizards, we posed at the very top with the entire city at our feet. The wind blowing here was so strong it made our ears ring. Our girlfriends even let their hair fly in the wind, creating stories on their pages in slow motion.

Kentin zirve noktası dediğimiz en tepeye kadar sadece birkaç arkadaşlarımızla çıktık. Burada manzara inanılmazdı. Dik kayanın üstünden sanki bir kertenkele gibi çıkarak en tepede şehri tamamını ayaklar altımıza alarak poz verdik. Burada esen rüzgarın hışımı kulaklarımızı inletmişti. We spent about an hour and a half inside the ancient city. Gathering our scattered friends together, we turned onto the road to Doyran Monastery, which awaited us on our return journey. The road to the monastery was not as tiring or merciful as the ancient city. We passed through routes where the mountains and hills created beautiful landscapes on wide, dirt-covered flat roads. Some pine trees had branches that had fallen onto the road, adding color and beauty to it. During our rest stops and short breaks, even lying down on the green grass by the roadside and looking at the white clouds in the sky gave us all pleasure.

Antik kentin içinde yaklaşık bir buçuk saat kadar kaldık. Dağılmış olan arkadaşlarımızı bir araya toplayarak, dönüş yolunda bizi bekleyen Doyran Manastırı yoluna girdik. Manastırın yolu antik kent kadar yorucu ve rahmetli değildi. Geniş, topraklı düz yolda dağların ve tepelerin güzel manzaralar yarattığı rotalardan geçtik. Bazı çam ağaçlarının yola savrulan dalları yolu güzelleştirerek renk katmış görünüyor. Dinlenme ve kısa molalarımızda yol kenarlarındaki yeşil otların üstüne uzanmak ve gökyüzündeki beyaz bulutlara bakmak bile hepimiz keyif vermişti.

Our visit to the monastery was brief. You can also turn off this road onto the Saklıkent road. Saklıkent is Antalya's famous ski resort. The monastery stands quietly among the red pine trees, a little way back from the road, with its mysterious stories. Doyran Monastery is one of our best-preserved historical monuments from the Byzantine period. This rare structure, of which we have very few examples, tells a story forgotten by time, hidden within the forest.

Çok fazla örneğini görmediğimiz bu ender yapı, ormanın içinde zamanın unuttuğu bir hikayeyi anlatıyor.

Within the forest, there are walls and passages shaped like a ruined and damaged church, reminiscent of castle walls. Passing through arched doors, a gathering area has been created. We see the beautiful surrounding views through the ruined stones. Inside the walled courtyard, there are ruined buildings. Around it are areas with toilets, a cistern, a tomb, and food storage areas. At the end of these structures, they built a chapel with collapsed walls. The monastery, intertwined with nature, shouts its mysterious story to nature among the uniquely beautiful red pine forests.

Ormanın içinde, kale duvarlarını anımsatan yüksek taşların yıkılmış ve hasar görmüş kilise şeklinde duvarları ve geçişleri var. Kemer şeklinde kapıların içinden geçerek, bir toplanma alanı oluşturulmuş. Yıkılmış taşların arasından etraftaki güzel manzaraları görüyoruz. Duvarlarla çevrili iç havlunun içinde yıkılmış yapılar bulunuyor. Etrafında ise, tuvaletler, sarnıç, mezar ve erzak depolarının olduğu alanlar var. Bu yapıların en sonunda duvarları yıkılmış bir şapel binasını dikmişler. Doğa ile iç içe olan Manastır, eşsiz güzellikteki kızılçam ormanlarının arasında gizemli hikayesini doğaya haykırıyor.

Doyran Monastery stands as a legendary structure, hidden and forgotten among the red pine forests and bushes. Each stone has stood silently through time, among the trees, with the prayers offered in the past. Although the stones of history have been lost today, the mysterious structure tries to tell its story.

Doyran Manastırı, kızılçam ormanının ve çalıların arasında saklı kalmış ve unutulmuş efsane yapı olarak durmaktadır. Her bir taşının zamanda yolculuğuyla ağaçların arasında geçmişte edinilen dualarıyla sessizce ayakta kalmıştır. Tarihin taşları günümüzde kaybolmuş olsa da gizemli yapısıyla hikayesini anlatmaya çalışıyor.
