Santuario de Meritxell, un ave fénix en Andorra // Sanctuary of Meritxell, a phoenix in Andorra

Hola querido hiver.

Te invito a que descubras conmigo un lugar muy especial que, como un ave fénix, ha resurgido de sus cenizas de manera literal. Se trata del Santuario de Meritxell, situado en el pueblo andorrano del mismo nombre. De origen románico, la pequeña capilla original se quemó en un incendio en 1972. Cuatro años más tarde se inauguraba el proyecto de nueva planta que ahora podemos visitar, cuyo diseñador fue el arquitecto Ricardo Bofill.

El santuario es parte de la conocida como Ruta Mariana, un itinerario cultural y religioso formado además de este por los santuarios del Pilar, Torreciudad, Montserrat y Lourdes.

La construcción se mezcla en el paisaje utilizando materiales de construcción propios de la zona. Su estilo contemporáneo está inspirado en corrientes tan diversas como el arte islámico del que toma la apertura de espacios, o el Renacimiento italiano para el diseño de la planta del edificio en cruz griega.

Al entrar al templo sorprende encontrar el altar en el medio, donde los brazos de la cruz se juntan. Y la luz, hay mucha luz que proviene de ambos lados y que atraviesa los cristales que comunican con los dos espacios abiertos.

En la parte derecha un pequeño patio cubierto parcialmente alberga una exposición de maquetas con todos los templos románicos del Principado de Andorra. Entre ellos está el de la capilla original del Santuario de Meritxell. También hay una sala con una exposición permanente de Biblias del mundo.

Volviendo sobre nuestros pasos nos encaminamos al altar. Desde este lado la vista es increíble con las montañas verdes y la superposición de arcos del claustro de fondo.

La talla de la Virgen de Meritxell es una reproducción de la románica original del siglo XII que se quemó en el incendio. Es de escaso tamaño, menos de un metro, de madera policromada y está sentada en un trono con el niño en sus rodillas. Como era habitual en esa época, es inexpresiva en ambas figuras.

Salimos al claustro. Cuando lo visité había una exposición de una artista de la zona (no recuerdo su nombre para darle crédito, lo siento...). En ella reinterpretaba la escena del incendio del santuario original utilizando personajes y leyendas típicos de aquellas montañas y valles.

Lo mejor es la multitud de perspectivas con las que se puede jugar para hacer fotografías. Y, claro, no me pude resistir. Allí se puede jugar a cazar sombras y reflejos, sobre todo si es un día luminoso y soleado como el que tuvimos.

Dejamos el edificio nuevo y nos dirigimos a la antigua capilla. Esta necesitó más tiempo para su restauración y no se reinauguró hasta 1994.

Conserva escasos elementos originales, casi todo se perdió en el incendio, pero lo poco que se consiguió salvar lo exponen allí y nos ayudan a saber más sobre el lugar, sus tradiciones y cómo evolucionó la devoción a su patrona.

Lo que más me impacto fue el par de figuras carbonizadas, pero también la reja que separaba la zona del altar y que resistió las altas temperaturas del fuego.

Como la visita se me había hecho corta en lugar de volver al inicio del recorrido me dio por husmear los alrededores de la capilla antigua, había unas escaleras hacia la zona de sombra y las subí. En buena hora lo hice, porque me habría perdido unas vistas espectaculares.

Las escaleras resultaron ser el principio de un camino que circulaba por la parte superior del santuario. Ver todo desde arriba da una perspectiva diferente y es una lástima que no esté bien indicado porque la mayoría de los visitantes se lo pierden. Éramos muy pocos los que atravesábamos esa zona.

Tras rodear el edificio por completo un nuevo tramo de escaleras nos devuelve al punto inicial y con él llega el final de esta visita. Espero que te haya gustado.

I invite you to discover with me a very special place that, like a phoenix, has literally risen from the ashes. It is the Sanctuary of Meritxell, located in the Andorran village of the same name. Of Romanesque origin, the original small chapel burnt down in a fire in 1972. Four years later, the new project that we can now visit, designed by the architect Ricardo Bofill, was inaugurated.

The sanctuary forms part of what is known as the Marian Route, a cultural and religious itinerary that also includes the sanctuaries of Pilar, Torreciudad, Montserrat and Lourdes.

The building blends into the landscape using local building materials. Its contemporary style is inspired by such diverse currents as Islamic art, from which it takes its open spaces, or the Italian Renaissance for the design of the building's Greek cross plan.

On entering the church it is surprising to find the altar in the middle, where the arms of the cross meet. And the light, there is a lot of light coming from both sides and coming through the glass that communicates with the two open spaces.

On the right-hand side, a small partially covered courtyard houses an exhibition of models of all the Romanesque temples in the Principality of Andorra. Among them is the original chapel of the Meritxell Sanctuary. There is also a room with a permanent exhibition of Bibles from around the world.

Retracing our steps we make our way to the altar. From this side the view is incredible with the green mountains and the overlapping arches of the cloister in the background.

The carving of the Virgin of Meritxell is a reproduction of the original 12th century Romanesque carving that was burnt in the fire. It is small, less than a metre in size, made of polychrome wood and is seated on a throne with the child on her knees. As was common at the time, she is expressionless in both figures.

We went out into the cloister. When I visited there was an exhibition by a local artist (I can't remember her name to give her credit, sorry...). In it she reinterpreted the fire scene of the original sanctuary using characters and legends typical of those mountains and valleys.

The best thing was the multitude of perspectives you can play with to take pictures. And, of course, I couldn't resist. There you can play with shadows and reflections, especially if it's a bright and sunny day like the one we had.

We left the new building and went to the old chapel. This took longer to restore and was not reopened until 1994.

It retains few original elements, almost everything was lost in the fire, but the little that was saved is exhibited there and helps us to know more about the place, its traditions and how devotion to its patron saint evolved.

What struck me most was the pair of charred figures, but also the grille that separated the altar area and that resisted the high temperatures of the fire.

As the visit was too short, instead of going back to the beginning of the tour I decided to look around the old chapel, there were some stairs to the shaded area and I climbed them. Good thing I did, because I would have missed some spectacular views.

The stairs turned out to be the beginning of a path that ran along the top of the sanctuary. Seeing everything from the top gives a different perspective and it is a pity that it is not well signposted because most visitors miss it. There were very few of us going through that area.

After going all the way around the building, a new flight of stairs brings us back to the starting point and with it comes the end of this visit. I hope you enjoyed it.
