One of the most well-known monasteries, with a very high number of pilgrims throughout the year, along with the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, is the Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe located in the province of Cáceres, in the autonomous region of Extremadura, Spain. I went to visit the town and the monastery on a road, first through oak pastures and quite flat, then changing and becoming winding as it skirted a mountain range, until reaching the town and the monastery. I left the capital of the autonomous region, Mérida, to go along the EX-102 road and then join the EX-118 and reach my destination. The area I was traveling through began to give small glimpses of the geography of what awaited me near the town. The road became very winding and I was able to stop at a viewpoint to take a look at that very special landscape of this area of the province of Cáceres.
Uno de los monasterios con más conocido, con un número de peregrinos muy elevado durante todo año, junto con la catedral de Santiago de Compostela, es el Real Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe ubicado en la provincia de Cáceres, en la región autonómica de Extremadura, España. Me dirigí ha hacer una visita a la población y al monasterio por una carretera, primero por dehesas de encinas y bastante llana para luego cambiar y volverse sinuosa por ir bordeando una sierra, hasta llegar al pueblo y al monasterio. Partí de la capital de la autonomía, Mérida para ir por la carretera EX-102 para luego incorporarme a la EX-118 y llegar a mi destino. La zona que iba recorriendo cercana empezaba a dar pequeñas pinceladas en cuanto a su geografía de lo que luego me esperaba en la cercanía de la población. La carretera se volvió con muchas curvas que serpenteaban y pude parar en un mirador a echar una visual a aquel paisaje tan especial de esta zona de la provincia de Cáceres.
When I arrived in the town, I first went to walk around some of the streets, the town centre and the town hall to get an idea of the town and get to know it. Gathering some information from local people, they gave me information on some details that I didn't know and also that a dance festival would be held that same night with the façade of the Monastery as a background. Already in the main square, sitting having a coffee on one of the terraces in the arcades opposite the monastery, they told me that the town was born when a shepherd found a carved figure of the Virgin in the river. This is estimated to have happened several centuries ago and after the discovery of the carving, a hermitage was built and from there it evolved into a town. According to Catholic and Christian tradition, the Virgin of Guadalupe is the queen of Spain and patron saint of all the lands united in Hispanic heritage.
Al llegar a la población primeramente me fui a recorrer una parte de esas calles, centro de la villa y ayuntamiento para hacerme una idea y conocer el pueblo. Recabando alguna información con gente del lugar me dieron información de algunos detalles que desconocía y también de que se celebraría un festival de danza y baile esa misma noche con la fachada del Monasterio como fondo. Ya en su plaza mayor, sentado tomando un café en unas terrazas que se encontraba en unos soportales enfrente al monasterio, me comentaron que la villa nació de que un pastor encontró una figura tallada en el río de la Virgen. Esto se estima que sucedió hace varios siglos y posteriormente al descubrimiento de la talla se construyo una ermita y de ahí evoluciono a población. Según la tradición católica y cristiana la Virgen de la Guadalupe es la reina de las Españas y patrona de todas las tierras hermanadas en hispanidad.

The visit to the interior is one of the best parts of getting to know this architectural gem, where the Gothic style predominates, but where other styles such as Baroque, Renaissance and Mudejar are mixed. The latter is particularly noticeable in the corridors, arches, fountains and decoration inside and in the courtyards of the monastery. The colour and the mixtures together with some architectural decorations on the interior facades made that walk seem like a fusion of styles that reminded me of visits to other places. The interior courtyards were an orchard with many species of plants and flowers and in the centre of one of them there was a pinnacle, supposedly where the first hermitage of the town was installed.
La visita a su parte interior es una de las mejores partes de conocer esta joya arquitectónica en la cual predomina el estilo gótico pero que se mezclan otros como el barroco, renacentista o mudéjar. Este último se deja notar en especial en los pasillos, arcos, fuentes y decoración en el interior y en los patios del monasterio. El color y las mezclas junto con unos adornos arquitectónicos en las fachadas interior hacia que aquel paseo me pareciera una fusión de estilos que me hacia recordar las visitas a otros lugares. Los patios interiores eran un vergel con muchas especies de plantas y flores y en el centro de uno de ellos había un pináculo, se supone que donde se instalo la primera ermita de la villa.

The interior of the monastery is dominated by courtyards and long corridors from which to capture many different angles. Walking through them, one becomes aware of the seclusion that those monks must have had and the experience of life in this place. The Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe is a clear example of religious architecture of the period and stands out from other convents for its majesty. It should also be noted that some tombs of nobles and kings are located in an area of the monastery designated for this purpose.
Patios interiores y largos pasillos desde donde captar muchos ángulos diferentes predominan en el interior del monasterio. Caminando por ellos se da uno de cuenta del recogimiento que aquellos monjes debían tener y la experiencia de vida en este lugar. El Real Monasterio de Santa María de Guadalupe es un claro ejemplo de arquitectura religiosa de la época y destaca sobre otros conventos por su majestuosidad. Decir también que algunas tumbas de nobles y reyes se encuentran en una zona del monasterio destinado para ello.

As evening fell, almost at dusk, I went to the back of the monastery where I could see the whole back and the group that formed with the population in this area. I approached the center because in a few moments a game of lights and dancing would begin along with the fireworks that would announce the beginning of the show that we, the attendees of this event, would see tonight.
Ya cayendo la tarde casi anocheciendo me fui a la parte de atrás del monasterio donde pude observar toda la parte trasera y el conjunto que formaba con la población en esta zona. Me fui acercando al centro ya que en breves momentos iniciaría un juego de luces y baile junto a los fuegos artificiales que anunciarían el principio del espectáculo que veríamos esta noche los asistentes este evento.
