Good day community

One of the longest and most powerful rivers in the country, which runs through three autonomous communities and borders neighbouring Portugal for several kilometres, is the Guadiana River. Its passage through three autonomous communities, Castilla la Mancha, Extremadura and Andalusia, leaves its mark on its path and forms different ecosystems adapted to the type of terrain in these areas of the different communities. In total, it runs for 744 kilometres and a significant part is shared with neighbouring Portugal. This adventure began in the city of Mérida, capital of the Extremaduran community from where I left that day and which is also crossed by the course of this river. My intention was to get away from urban areas to see the Guadiana River in its most natural and scenic state in this area of the province of Badajoz. On the regional road EX-307 I reached one of the hundreds of bridges that cross it in the so-called “badén del Guadiana”, by the inhabitants of the area.

I took the opportunity to cross the bridge and take the detour, a small sand track, which took me to a cleared area of the river where I could park the car to begin the walk along the banks of the river. From this point I began a walk that would take me to an area where the vegetation swallowed me up, full of tall reeds and aquatic plants that sometimes exceeded my height and that I had to avoid to get closer to the shore. The fauna surprised me and groups of birds such as egrets, some cranes and ducks accompanied me and made me see part of the diversity that this great river houses in its journey through these lands. Every time I went deeper and in each of the curves that the river was forming, the landscape was changing and had prepared some scenic surprises for me that made this trip an unforgettable experience in nature.

At every step and as I went deeper into the river's course in this area, the river presented some small areas of stones and sand like small islands in a sea of vegetation. The contrast between the sky, the green of the plants and trees and the reflections in the water accompanied me throughout the journey and gave a special charm to this situation in which I found myself immersed. In this area there were no paths and my walking was slow since I had to avoid and sometimes go around areas to be able to advance in my idea of going deeper into these river banks.

In its middle course, which was where I was, the Guadiana is a garden that gives life to this entire region and, from its degraded banks, I could see how this river had experienced different stages of great floods and also droughts on its banks. It is currently one of the most powerful rivers in the country and collects water from many tributaries that lead it to flow into the country's southern border, in the province of Huelva.

In this area there are the so-called “Vegas del Guadiana” divided into high and low areas. The region is fed by the river and creates ecosystems that are used for irrigation and the cultivation of different vegetables, and its floods are used for the rice fields that abound in its low plains.
