In the interior of the Galician community in the northwest of the country there are a series of picturesque and characteristic villages of this region of the Galician mountain range that I could not miss on my route through Galicia. Near the city of Ourense, about 12 kilometers along the Rías Bajas A-52 highway, which connects Madrid with the city of Vigo, the town of Allariz is located on the banks of the Arnoia River in its valley. When you leave the motorway branch and enter the town, there is a large park on both sides of the river and an area where you can leave your car to begin this adventure through this town of water and stone.
En el interior de la comunidad de Galicia al noroeste del país hay una serie de pueblos pintorescos y característicos de esta región del macizo montañoso gallego que no podía dejar pasar en mi ruta por Galicia. Cerca de la ciudad de Ourense, a unos 12 kilómetros por la autovía de las Rías Bajas A-52, que comunica Madrid con la ciudad de Vigo, se encuentra a orillas del rio Arnoia en su valle, la población de Allariz. Al salir por el ramal de la autovía y entrar en el pueblo un gran parque a ambos lados del rio y una zona donde poder dejar el coche para iniciar esta aventura por este pueblo de agua y piedra.
In the face of the beauty of the dense vegetation in the river area, two paths that run along it in the town capture my attention. The sound of the water and the tranquility that permeates the atmosphere is fantastic. This morning in Allariz, the water and its flow and murmur keep me captivated and I can't help but follow the path and discover these river corners that awaken many sensations in me.
Ante la belleza de la vegetación espesa de la zona del rio dos caminos que lo recorren en la localidad copan toda mi atención. El sonido del agua y de la tranquilidad que se respira en el ambiente es fantástico. En esta mañana por Allariz el agua y su correr y rumor me mantiene cautivo y no puedo más que seguir el sendero y conocer estos rincones fluviales que despiertan en mi muchas sensaciones.
Arnoia River/ Rio Arnoia
On the riverbank I visited some of the old mills of the town that had been restored and converted into cafes and restaurants. I sat down to have a coffee on one of the terraces and stayed for a long time observing the whole group of old buildings. The blending of these mills with the surroundings was total and the explanations that they gave me about their use in the past confirmed that it had been an important area where many grain farmers used the power of water to make their flour. I was in love with the place and it was hard for me to get up from that chair because wherever I looked the beauty of the place had me captivated.
En el margen del rio visite alguno de los antiguos molinos de la villa restaurados y convertidos en cafeterías y restaurantes. Me senté a tomar un café en una de sus terrazas y me quede durante un largo rato observando todo aquel conjunto de viejas edificaciones. El mimetismo de estos molinos con ese entrono era total y las explicaciones que me dieron de su uso en el pasado me confirmaron que había sido una importante zona donde muchos agricultores de grano usaban la fuerza del agua para hacer sus harinas. El sitio me tenia enamorado y me costó mucho levantarme de aquella silla ya que mirara a donde mirara la belleza del lugar me tenia atrapado.

I had something to eat in the area and headed towards the centre of the town through streets with a special charm. The history of Allariz dates back to medieval times and the town reached its peak in the 6th century. Various historical events took place there and King Alfonso VI was educated there and later built the walls and the castle. Various historical events define it, such as the “Irmandiñas” wars between revolts of brothers in the kingdom of Galicia or the Napoleonic period.
Comí algo en la zona y me dirigí hacia el centro del pueblo por calles con un encanto especial. La historia de Allariz se remonta a la época medieval y la villa tiene su pleno auge en el siglo VI. En ella pasaron diferentes acontecimientos históricos y el rey Alfonso VI donde se educo y posteriormente construyo las murallas y el castillo. Diferentes hechos históricos la definen como las guerras “Irmandiñas” entre revueltas de hermanos del reino de Galicia o el periodo napoleónico.
In honour of a local festival that takes place during Corpus Christi week, which this year will be from 14 to 22 June. The oxen are released from the outskirts of the town and directed along the cobbled streets where the runners guide the ox to its destination. This type of festivity is not typical of other regions of the country and in this case of Allariz it is very special. In honour of this festival a contemporary statue appears in one of the areas of these beautiful streets giving us an idea of how this type of event takes place in the town.
En homenaje a una fiesta local que se celebra durante la semana del Corpus, que este próximo año será del 14 al 22 de Junio. Los bueyes son soltados desde las afueras de la villa hasta dirigirlos por las calles empedradas donde los corredores dirigen al buey a su destino. Este tipo de festividades sin típicas de otras regiones del país y en este caso de Allariz es muy especial. En homenaje a esta festividad una estatua contemporánea irrumpe en una de las zonas de estas hermosas calles dándonos una idea de cómo se desarrolla este tipo de acontecimientos en la villa.

How lovely is this medieval town. I don't know why, but it gives me the impression of being a lonely, tranquil, and peaceful place. I think it's a perfect spot for a retreat.
