Peschiera Del Garda - Verona / Road Trip Through Italy

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

After spending a good amount of time exploring and getting to know Bologna, and accumulating those pleasant aches and pains that come with believing that walking a little further never hurt anyone, it was finally time to continue the journey to the last point before returning home. That bittersweet moment when you still want to enjoy everything, but already feel the end of the adventure beckoning from afar.

Depois de passar um bom tempo a percorrer e a conhecer Bolonha, e de acumular aquelas dores simpáticas de quem insiste em acreditar que andar mais um bocadinho nunca fez mal a ninguém, estava finalmente na hora de seguir viagem até ao último ponto antes de regressar a casa. Aquele momento meio agridoce de quem ainda quer aproveitar tudo, mas já sente o fim da aventura a acenar ao longe.

The next destination was Verona, but, since I don't like arriving at places just for the sake of it, I immediately started looking at the map and figuring out the best way to enjoy that last day. And that's when the idea came up that before we went to sleep in Verona, why not stop at a special place nearby, a small detour that promised to compensate for every kilometer, always with the idea of ​​planning the perfect route for the time we had available.

O destino seguinte seria Verona, mas, como não gosto de chegar aos sítios só porque sim, comecei logo a olhar para o mapa e a fazer contas à melhor forma de tirar partido daquele último dia. E foi aí que surgiu a ideia de antes de irmos dormir a Verona, porque não parar num sítio especial ali perto, um pequeno desvio que prometia compensar cada quilómetro, sempre com a ideia de delinear o trajeto perfeito para o tempo que tínhamos disponível.

We ended up in Peschiera del Garda.
Beautiful name, like practically all the others in Italy, all the names sound good :) pleasant sound, and a historical reputation that commands respect right from the entrance, strategically located at the edge of Lake Garda, that serene yet vibrant blue giant.

Nome bonito, como praticamente todos os outros em Itália, todos os nomes soam bem :) som agradável, e uma reputação histórica que mete respeito logo na entrada, estrategicamente localizada na extremidade do Lago de Garda, aquele gigante azul sereno mas cheio de vida.

We arrived with the sun shining directly on us, one of those clear days that makes the colors more vivid, the shadows more defined, and everything with a somewhat cinematic air. As we approached, the walls of Peschiera began to reveal themselves, and I immediately understood why this place received its UNESCO World Heritage title. It's not just beautiful, it's imposing.

Chegámos com o sol a bater de frente, daqueles dias luminosos que deixam as cores mais vivas, as sombras mais definidas e tudo com um ar meio cinematográfico. À medida que nos aproximávamos, as muralhas de Peschiera começaram a revelar-se, e percebi imediatamente porque razão este sítio recebeu o seu título de Património Mundial da UNESCO. Não é apenas bonito, é imponente.

The city is literally embraced by Venetian walls, so well preserved that it seems as if the soldiers of yesteryear only left for a break and are now returning. There is something majestic in the way everything there was built, with perfect angles, passages over the water, robust walls, with that military architecture that is not there just to show off, but to be experienced, explored, and above all, to be admired. And then comes the water, running through those canals that cut through the city as if they were hand-painted, with a greenish-blue that changes tone as the sun moves across the sky. The reflections of the walls in the water create that feeling of being inside an illustrated postcard. The small bridges, the buildings in warm terracotta colors, ochre, that burnt yellow so typical of Italy where everything blends with a romantic softness.

A cidade é literalmente abraçada por muralhas venezianas, tão bem preservadas que fazem parecer que os soldados de antigamente saíram apenas para uma pausa e voltam já. Há qualquer coisa de majestoso na forma como tudo ali foi construído, com ângulos perfeitos, passagens sobre a água, muros robustos, com aquela arquitetura militar que não está ali só para mostrar, mas sim para ser vivida, percorrida e acima de tudo, para ser admirada.
E depois vem a água, a correr naqueles canais que cortam a cidade como se fossem pintados à mão, com um azul esverdeado que muda de tom conforme o sol se mexe no céu. Os reflexos das muralhas na água criam aquela sensação de que estamos dentro de um postal ilustrado. As pequenas pontes, os edifícios de cores quentes terracota, ocre, aquele amarelo queimado tão típico de Itália onde tudo se mistura com uma suavidade romântica.

Walking there in the middle, in that piece of land, is like living in a scene where everything conspires to put you in a good mood, with flowers scattered on every corner, on the windowsills, the old facades laden with history, and that relaxed late afternoon atmosphere where it seems like nobody is in a hurry for anything. And, let's be honest, in a place like this it would be a crime to be in a hurry, although I believe that people, especially the locals, end up relativizing after some time and getting used to witnessing this kind of scene daily.
But hey, we're also in Italy… who else but them?

Andar ali pelo meio, naquele pedaço de terra é como viver um cenário onde tudo conspira para nos pôr de bom humor, com flores espalhadas por todos os cantos de esquina, nos parapeitos das janelas, as fachadas antigas carregadas de história, e aquele ambiente descontraído de final de tarde em que parece que ninguém tem pressa de nada. E, sejamos honestos, num lugar destes seria um crime ter pressa, embora acredite que as pessoas, principalmente os locais, acabem por relativizar depois de algum tempo e habituados a presenciar diariamente este tipo de cenário
Mas pronto, também estamos em Itália… quem mais senão eles?

The weather cooperated, with strong but pleasant sunshine, that kind of heat that doesn't suffocate but gives the feeling of a perfect vacation. The shadows of the walls created small, cool oases, and the wind coming from the lake always brought a pleasant breeze.
Peschiera del Garda ended up being much more than a simple detour on the way to Verona; it was one of those places that sticks in your memory as if it had been waiting for you forever. It's the kind of place that makes you think, "How come I've never heard of this before?"
The trip wasn't over yet, and with a start like that, the last day promised to be memorable.

O clima ajudou, com o sol forte mas agradável, aquele calor que não sufoca mas que dá a sensação de férias perfeitas. As sombras das muralhas criavam pequenos oásis frescos, e o vento que vinha do lago trazia sempre uma brisa agradável.
Peschiera del Garda acabou por ser muito mais do que um simples desvio no caminho para Verona, foi um daqueles lugares que fica colado à memória como se estivesse à nossa espera desde sempre. É o tipo de sítio que nos faz pensar: “Como é que nunca ouvi falar disto antes?”
A viagem ainda não tinha acabado, e com um começo assim, o último dia prometia ser memorável.
