Night View - Monsanto Historic Village / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

We ended our mini vacation but not before leaving here a spectacular record of the view of Monsanto at night.
As the sun began to disappear over the horizon, hiding behind the mountains, we decided to take an evening stroll through the charming village. Dusk painted the sky with shades of orange and pink as the village slowly sank into the tranquility of night.

As we walked through the narrow, winding streets, I was amazed at the peace that surrounded the place. Monsanto, although a popular tourist destination, maintains the serenity of a historic village with few inhabitants. The silence was broken only by the sound of our footsteps echoing on the ancient stones and the occasional meow of a cat that crossed our path.

À medida que caminhávamos pelas ruas estreitas e sinuosas, fiquei maravilhada com a paz que envolvia o lugar. Monsanto, embora seja um destino turístico popular, mantém a serenidade de uma vila histórica com poucos habitantes. O silêncio era quebrado apenas pelo som dos nossos passos ecoando nas pedras antigas e pelo ocasional miado de um gato que cruzava o nosso caminho.

The granite houses and monuments gained a magical aura under the soft, warm light of the typical toasted yellow lamps. The lighting seemed to highlight the rustic texture of the buildings, highlighting every detail and every curve of the streets that snaked through the village. It was as if every corner told a story, every stone carried memories of times gone by.

As casas e monumentos de granito ganhavam uma aura mágica sob a luz suave e cálida dos candeeiros típicos de cor amarelo torrado. A iluminação parecia realçar a textura rústica das construções, destacando cada detalhe e cada curva das ruas que serpenteavam pelo vilarejo. Era como se cada esquina contasse uma história, cada pedra carregasse memórias de tempos passados.

As the night progressed, the sky turned into a black blanket dotted with stars. The darkness, far from being oppressive, brought a sense of calm and introspection. There were no more tourists on the streets, everyone had retired to their accommodation, and the locals were also in their homes, enjoying the nighttime comfort. The lack of nightlife venues contributed to the peaceful, almost ethereal atmosphere of the place.

Com o avançar da noite, o céu se transformou em um manto negro pontilhado de estrelas. A escuridão, longe de ser opressiva, trazia uma sensação de calma e introspecção. Já não havia mais turistas nas ruas, todos haviam se recolhido às suas acomodações, e os habitantes locais também estavam em suas casas, aproveitando o aconchego noturno. A falta de locais de diversão noturna contribuía para a atmosfera pacífica e quase etérea do lugar.

We continued our walk through the solitude of the streets, accompanied only by the cats that glided silently through the shadows, creating a feeling of exclusivity, as if that night and that village were ours alone. Monsanto, in the stillness of the night, revealed an even more enchanting and authentic side, a true treasure for those seeking tranquility and beauty in its purest form.
Finally, after having covered every corner and marveling at every detail, we also decided to return to the small shelter where we stayed, taking with us the memory of an unforgettable night in Monsanto.

Continuamos o passeio pela solidão das ruas, acompanhada apenas pelos gatos que deslizavam silenciosamente pelas sombras, criando uma sensação de exclusividade, como se aquela noite e aquela vila fossem só nossas. Monsanto, na quietude da noite, revelava uma faceta ainda mais encantadora e autêntica, um verdadeiro tesouro para quem busca tranquilidade e beleza na sua forma mais pura.
Por fim, depois de ter percorrido cada canto e me maravilhado com cada detalhe, decidimos também nós voltar ao pequeno abrigo onde ficamos hospedados, levando comigo a lembrança de uma noite inesquecível em Monsanto.

Monsanto is part of the Great Route of Historic Villages (GR22), which connects the 12 Historic Villages of Portugal in a circular route of approximately 600 km.
The Grand Route 22 was redesigned and signposted again in 2015. The excellent work done resulted in the awarding of the "Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe" seal by the European Walkers Association.
To visit Monsanto is to appreciate a gift of human ingenuity. Human beings have a remarkable ability to adapt to their environment, even when nature is harsh and unforgiving. Monsanto faz parte da Grande Rota das Aldeias Históricas (GR22), que conecta as 12 Aldeias Históricas de Portugal num percurso circular de aproximadamente 600 km.
A Grande Rota 22 foi reformulada e sinalizada novamente em 2015. O excelente trabalho feito resultou na atribuição do selo "Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe" (melhores destinos de caminhadas da Europa) pela Associação Europeia de Caminhantes.
Visitar Monsanto é apreciar um presente da engenhosidade humana. O ser humano possui uma capacidade notável de se adaptar ao ambiente, mesmo quando a natureza é rude e implacável. Neste cenário autêntico, Monsanto oferece uma das paisagens naturais e culturais mais impressionantes, típicas e deslumbrantes de Portugal. Não deixem de explorar Monsanto e tudo o que de mais belo tem para oferecer.

Among the must-see places in Monsanto are the Baluarte, the Capela de São João, Santa Maria do Castelo and the Capela de São Miguel, as well as the houses of important personalities, including Fernando Namora and Zeca Afonso's house. .
At a higher altitude, don't forget to visit the Castle, the Citadel, the Cistern and along the way Furdas.
In fact, there are a huge number of places to stop, including the Main Church and the Misericórdia Church, as well as the Necropolis of São Miguel and the Ruins of the Village of the Parish of São Miguel.

Entre os locais de paragem obrigatória em Monsanto estão o Baluarte, a Capela de São João, a de Santa Maria do Castelo e a Capela de São Miguel, assim como a casa de importantes personalidades entre elas a de Fernando Namora e a casa do Zeca Afonso.
Numa altura mais elevada não esqueçer de visitar o Castelo, a Cidadela, a Cisterna e pelo caminho as Furdas.
Na verdade são imensos os locais de paragem obrigatória, tendo ainda a Igreja Matriz e a igreja da Misericórdia, assim como a Necrópole de São Miguel e as Ruínas do Povoado da Freguesia de São Miguel

To renew your energy, there is nothing better than a few days spent in a rural tourism house, and the charming village of Monsanto is ideal. Nothing beats the experience of "living" in one of these houses among rocks (and we did). The village offers a variety of places to sleep, a benefit of its worldwide reputation.
